and bloody hell I absolutely loved it.

I really don’t like horror but this was just what I needed. Started reading yesterday morning and haven’t really done anything else apart from sleep, eat, and go to the loo.

It’s been AGES since I’ve been sucked into a book like that.

Bravo Mr King you genius you.

@took I noticed that when The Overlook was mentioned in Misery!

vegisaurus · 12/05/2020 21:28

I have only had to stop reading a book once in my life and that was firestarter! I can't put my finger on why it freaked me out so much, but I could feel my heart racing as I was reading and it actually gave me nightmares (which has never happened before). I should probably find a nice sunny day and try and finish it to get some closure!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/05/2020 21:31

I love The Stand so much and I think it's the perfect time to read it actually. My all time favorite book.

Spied · 12/05/2020 22:15

@WindsorBlues
I tried to watch it but gave up.
I think I was expecting too muchGrin

ScoutFinchsHam · 19/05/2020 10:36

I haven’t read a SK for years and years (last one was Salem’s Lot when I was about 16 - really freaked me out) but am currently reading 11.22.63 and boy, I am loving it! He’s just such a brilliant storyteller. Can’t stop thinking about it and can’t wait to get back to it in the evenings.

EnidSugden · 19/05/2020 12:18

I liked 11-22-63 but I thought it was about a third too long.

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 20/05/2020 15:31

Hi everyone, bringing this thread back to say that Vanity Fair have done an article on the new production of The Stand - there are some great photos. It confirms that it'll be released later this year (no set date). The production style sounds quite different from the original series. I'll be really interested to see how the story is portrayed in this one, especially as King has written a new ending!

chunkyrun · 20/05/2020 15:34

Only read pet cemetery! Need to give his other stuff a read

evieray · 20/05/2020 15:44

haven't read King's books yet..
I know that books aren't as scary as movies (is some ways), but I just don't know..I think maybe I need a special mood to start reading.
I know that mr king's books leave no one indifferent, so.... what you would recommend to start with?

also, rereading harry potter now ~

WindsorBlues · 20/05/2020 15:50

Hi @Evieray start with Pet Sematary or the Shinning

NoneForYouFletcher · 20/05/2020 15:56

I really enjoyed the Dark Tower series, except for the first one which I found hard to get into, but loved the second and subsequent books.
Years later I re-read them all and did then find the first one a bit easier.

AppropriateAdult · 20/05/2020 15:57

I wouldn’t start with Pet Semetary, it’s particularly horrible and nihilistic in a way that most King books aren’t. The Stand and It are two of the best, but they’re both very long. I’d start with the criminally-underrated Bag of Bones, which is classic King without being overwhelmingly lengthy. The Dead Zone is excellent also. Or the novella The Langoliers, which was one of the first ones I read and loved - it’s in Four Past Midnight.

theseriousmoonlight · 20/05/2020 18:14

I wouldn't start with Pet Semetary either Evieray. In fact, it's the only SK book I don't think I'll ever re-read. It's so bloody chilling.

Having said that, I don't really see SK as a 'horror' writer. His work can be creepy and disturbing but he is, at heart, a story teller. He can create a character in one sentence.

I too would love a SK tour to Maine. I bet there's excellent bus tours!

Spied · 21/05/2020 20:53

The first one I read was IT. Absolutely got me addicted to all things SK.
I'd also recommend Needful Things as one of your first reads.

mizu · 23/05/2020 14:32

Ooh just seen this and you've got me thinking about rereading The Shining.

Absolutely LOVED Stephen King when I was a teenager. Read loads of his books and used to terrify myself Grinas my bedroom was in the attic and the house was generally creaky.

Don't like horror now and can't watch it but the Shining was so good.

Charles11 · 23/05/2020 20:19

I love Stephen King. I’ve read many of his books but not The Stand.
I’m going to order it and read it.
My ds (15) has got into Stephen King too and has been loving his books. For someone who didn’t really enjoy reading to reading til 2.30am, I’ve got SK to thank for that.
It’s also interesting to know that new generations are enjoying his books just as much.
