and bloody hell I absolutely loved it.

I really don’t like horror but this was just what I needed. Started reading yesterday morning and haven’t really done anything else apart from sleep, eat, and go to the loo.

It’s been AGES since I’ve been sucked into a book like that.

Bravo Mr King you genius you.

Ooh @SanFranBear I love LOVE Insomnia! 🥰

I really hope someone makes a film because done right it could be amazing. Imagine the world of auras and the 3 docs.....!

AprilJune · 10/05/2020 16:43

I liked The Institute. Cried buckets at the demise of one of the characters (trying to avoid spoilers).

Willow2017 · 10/05/2020 19:17

Oh The Institute was good. And a real emotional roller coaster.

ScribblyGum · 11/05/2020 09:06

Just finished Doctor Sleep. Enjoyed it very much but it’s not a patch on The Shining.

Watched the Kubrick version yesterday, still processing that one. The horrible music is going to stay with me the longest I think. And that remarkable 70s decor Grin

So what's next? More Stephen King? I read The Institute and thought it was ace. The Outsider is also very good.

I'm going to add Gerald's Game to my tbr list (only read it once and that was ages ago) as well as Salem's Lot (there's a character that crosses over to The Dark Tower and I want to re-acquaint myself with him). But those come after It and 22.11.63 (which I read every 2 years).

This thread has made me want to re-read all the Stephen King!

TooGood2BeTrue · 11/05/2020 17:59

The film is fantastic, too. My absolute, all-time favourite movie.

KuckFnows · 11/05/2020 18:00

I've not read it... or seen the film.

Much prefer a good book to a film so may have to invest

MamaNewtNewt · 11/05/2020 18:09

I love Stephen King too and am currently rereading all of his books in order - I'm currently on The Eyes of the Dragon. My favourites are It, The Stand, Salem's Lot, The Dead Zone, Duma Key and 11/22/63. So jealous of anyone reading any for the first time.

BigRedBoat · 11/05/2020 18:11

The stand is my absolute favourite, I also love the deadzon and 11.22.63, I must catch up on some the ones I haven't read.

HenSolo · 11/05/2020 18:17

Oh do more Stephen King! When he gets it right (like with The Shining) he absolutely smashes it and for me no one else comes close. Personal best IT (but I read it when I was twelve so has massive nostalgia value for me) and The Long Walk. Also Firestarter and any of the older short story collections. Personally The Stand left me cold which is odd considering most SK fans love it, but there you go!

Changedname81 · 11/05/2020 21:14

I loved Rose Madder, could actually see myself in the painting ...

Such wonderful story telling
Also Bag of Bones and Insomnia like many have said.

Willow2017 · 11/05/2020 21:27

I like 'Elevation' just a good insight to small town dynamics yet with a twist. Shorter story but was swept up by it and snivelling by the end😄

The Body is awesome. Such an insight into growing up in a small town and how friendships get you through the bad times. The film was good too one of the best adaptations of his work imho.

EllaAlright · 11/05/2020 22:24

I’ve read most of Stephen Kings books. My favourite by a mile is definitely ‘Christine’. No one sets a tone quite like King.

UpToonGirl · 12/05/2020 14:33

@changedname81 I found the husband in Rose Madder one of his scariest characters! I had forgotten Bag of Bones - that is another favourite. Dark Half and Needful Things are also high on my list of favourites.

It's so hard to recommend an SK book as most of them are amazing! I think if I went back in time I would probably read them in order.

Changedname81 · 12/05/2020 15:09

One of the sentences that really stuck out for me in Rose Madder was (when she was dealing with a horrifically physically torturous / abusive marriage)

“I stoped thinking what if one day he kills me and thought - what if he DOESNT”

The reality that this could be her life every day for many many years ...

Really powerful to me.

Took · 12/05/2020 15:13

I love Stephen King! Started reading him when I was about 11 and have never stopped. Grin

The more you read the more you'll see how many of them connect. Just tiny small things usually that only make sense if you've read the relevant other SK book.

ScribblyGum · 12/05/2020 19:06

I’ve started The Stand. Unlikely to finish this one in a couple of days I think.

We watched the film of Doctor Sleep last night.
Having assured my family that the book is much less scary than the book of The Shining, and having found the Kubrick movie unsettling rather than terrify I thought we would all be fine.

Nope. That’s a scary film.

Rose the Hat is one cool chick though.

peaceanddove · 12/05/2020 20:24

Bag of Bones is so atmospheric you can almost taste. My friend's Aunt actually has a house on a lake in Maine and I've always wanted to go stay there so I can scare myself shirtless.

nevertrustaninja · 12/05/2020 20:27

The Long Walk is great - a forerunner to the Hunger Games. It's written under Richard Bachman but it is Steven King.

Spied · 12/05/2020 20:33

Love 'The Shining' and was left a little disappointed by 'Doctor Sleep' after being so excited to read it. I didn't like the film at all.
I love SK although I'm not happy with his move into sci-fiSad.
Favourite of all time is IT. Loved Needful Things.
My dream is to go on the SK tour in Maine.

Willow2017 · 12/05/2020 21:16

go on the SK tour in Maine. I would love that, need to win the lottery first!

WindsorBlues · 12/05/2020 21:18

Had anyone watched Castle Rock? It's an anthology TV series based on characters from the Stephen King Universe. Season 1 was meh but I loved season 2.

Thatbitchcarolebaskin · 12/05/2020 21:18

I didn’t rate The Shining but loved Dr Sleep
