Banging on about the library- but the cost doesn’t matter if you have this so it will alter recommendations.

Am enjoying Gillian Flynn’s dark objects if that helps

TabbyStar · 07/04/2020 20:08

Problem with the library is not being able to download to Kindle, I don't want to be looking at an iPad screen, especially before bed, don't know if there is any way around this.

RubbishQueen · 07/04/2020 20:14

I read 'The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay' the first one was free on the kindle. The next 2 in the series I could borrow for free. Not sure how it why, perhaps because I have prime...?

Feenie · 07/04/2020 23:01

Any good?

Read Life, Death and Vanilla Slices today, by Jenny Eclair - £2.99, excellent. She's a bit annoying on TV but this is the second of her novels I've read and really enjoyed - she's a great writer.

I enjoyed the 'little friends' book you recommended.

Also 'watching, the making of Riley Paige' by Blake Pierce.

The 'Laura Nelson Collection' Patricia Gussin was good too, though I found it hard to get started. Somewhere between a family saga and a detective novel opens in Detroit, 1967.

PleasantVille · 08/04/2020 16:08

Tried Amazon Prime in January but I like to own the books when I've bought them, since I share my family account with my parents

I have Amazon Prime and as far as I understand it I do own any book that I've bought, why would being a prime member make any difference to whether you own the book? Aside from Prime Reads and the monthly free book the cost is the same as for anyone else.

Is it something specific to a family account?

ravenmum · 08/04/2020 16:16

In Five Years seems very readable so far

Feenie · 08/04/2020 17:17

Should have said I like to own the books when I've read them, sorry.

Will put that on my wishlist, thanks ravenmum.

You like to owne the physical books? That makes sense, I was worried that books I've paid for on my Kindle but have yet read weren't mine and might be taken away if I don't renew my Prime subscription.

Feenie · 08/04/2020 19:11

No, kindle books! You keep the ones you buy, but the ones you read with your Prime Subscription disappear when Prime does.

I enjoyed one moment Linda green, was 99p now 1.99.

Also just got found 99p Erin kinsley.

Have also downloaded little people as suggested OP.

I'm also on about one a day.

I HATED normal people sally Rooney and actually returned it, even though it was less than a pound. It is written without any speech quotes and I couldn't process it.

PleasantVille · 08/04/2020 19:53

Maybe I've got lockdown brain but I'm still not understanding which ones you, mean. f you buy a book you can always keep it, if you borrow it via Prime reading it's the same as a library book.

Which are the ones do you mean when you say Tried Amazon Prime in January but I like to own the books when I've bought them

FthisS · 08/04/2020 21:53

Sorry if this is well known, but you can return kindle books for a refund. I only found this out a few months back.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/04/2020 22:02

I enjoyed this series of novels, the first one is free and occasionally the second one is free too. [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gauguin-Connection-Book-Genevieve-Lenard-ebook/dp/B008X3NCRE/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=genevieve+lenard&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1586379680&sr=8-3]]

Lurleene · 08/04/2020 22:19

The new Heidi Perks novel Three Perfect Liars is 99p at the moment. Sorry I can't do a link for some reason.
I haven't read it yet but enjoyed her previous two novels so would recommend it. I think one was a Richard and Judy pick.

Taytotots · 09/04/2020 02:36

@TabbyStar there is a way to covert books so you can read on kindle apprenticealf.wordpress.com/. Obviously shouldn't be used for anything but enabling reading on your own device. I don't like reading on my phone/tablet before bed either.

Feenie · 09/04/2020 09:49

Thanks for the recs, moobar - I found Normal People v slow also, for the same reason, although I did finish it.I

Pleasantville, I like to keep the books I read, therefore Prime is not for me.

I did know you could return Kindle books and have done so once or twice, but can't remember why.

Really enjoying Blood Orange, it's v good.

Keep the recommendations coming please, really useful!

Hi All, I was about to post my own thread looking for recommendations but I see you read the same books as me so I will stay on here.

I love all the books on Maeve Kerrigan; the Ruth Galloway series; I loved Standard Deviation;

I'm reading Apple Tree Yard at them moment but it is no where near as good as Blood Orange or Girl on the Train.

Have you read The Couple next door? The Family Upstairs?

I also loved The Hunting Party and The Guest List.

The Bankers Wife - brilliant
Behind Closed Doors
My Husbands lies
The Wife Between us - excellent

The Thora Gudmundstottir Series is really good too - skandi noir but with a really normal female detective.

So now you know what I love, please can you all send me some great book ideas. Thanks

I also really disliked Normal people and that John Boyne recent book about the writer - and I don't like Tanya French books.

But I would love to find another series with a female detective / lawyer / pathologist who also has a good back story, preferably set in the UK as books set in Ireland are too parochial for my taste (I can say this as I am Irish) and the US ones never seem relatable.

TabbyStar · 09/04/2020 12:47

Thanks Tayto I'll try that.

Feenie · 09/04/2020 15:45

Read any Paula Daly? Her first four fit your brief and are brilliant.

Cheap recommendations for you:
The Mother I Could Have Been - £1.99
What Have I Done? - £1.89
The Silent Wife - £1.99
The Proposal - 99p
He Said, She Said - £2.99
The Wicked Girls - £2.99
The Flight of Cornelia Blackwood (REALLY good) 99p
Cuckoo £2.99
The Woman Before Me 99p

They are my 5 star good reads that are cheap.

5 star reads not so cheap:

The Lying Room
The Goldfinch
Us
The House We Grew Up In
The Safest Place

The Unknown Bridesmaid
What She Knew
How to Be a Good Wife
Instructions for a Heatwave
A Tale for the Time Being

Have read and also enjoyed from your list:

Behind Closed Doors
My Husbands lies
The Family Upstairs

I did like the John Boyne book!

Just finished Blood Orange - brilliant. I would put it on the same footing as Apple Tree Yard. Bereft now, as all good books should leave you Smile

I've also just downloaded Edgar Alan Poe, Complete Tales. There are some decent classics free of charge - all the Jane Austens, Dickens, etc.

Heyduggeefordays · 09/04/2020 16:04

Wall of silence - Tracey Buchanan

rosegoldwatcher · 09/04/2020 16:29

@Feenie - your list is my taste to a T!
A Perfectly Good Man is in my all time top 5. I bought it for a friend's birthday this week and sent the Kindle version through Amazon. They delivered it to her email address and she was able to download it to her Kindle. (You might all know about this service but I have only just discovered it!)
My recommendations are:
The Other Mrs Walker - Mary Paulson-Ellis (£3.99)
The Good Samaritan - John Marrs (£1.99)
Precious Bane - Mary Webb (99p)
Ferney - James Long (£2.99)

Annasgirl · 09/04/2020 16:33

Thanks Feenie.

Yes I’ve read some on the list and will try others. I read the latest Meave Kerrigan this week and then Blood Orange - so I’ve had good luck.

Slightly different but also brilliant is Firefly (Spy novel, brilliantly written) by Henry Porter and his follow up. Also Lullaby.

Off to download that series now, thanks.
