I've recently started re-reading books I read as a child and teenager, having a fantastic time doing it so thought I'd share, would love to hear your books! As you will see there is a strong Enid Blyton theme....

Famous Five (but not all of them)
Malory Towers
Faraway Tree
Goodnight Mr Tom
Black Beauty (who was this by?)
the Little HOuse on the Prairie series
Nancy Drew

I bought the abridged version for my daughter today. Now I am thinking she might be too young. She is 4. ????

mylastrolo · 27/09/2007 19:29

For some reason 'Heidi' sticks in my mind.

NAB3 · 27/09/2007 21:00

I still have my copy of Heidi from when I was about 10.

xXxamyxXx · 27/09/2007 21:04

loved malory towers and famous five oh and the secret garden was great

mylastrolo · 27/09/2007 22:47

nabs Is it the one with wee sketches of heidi on the mountain and bearded Grandfather carving the chair red/pink cover!!

NAB3 · 28/09/2007 08:34

I bought it on Tuesday 2nd November 1982 and it has a coloured cover with Heidi holding some bluebells and stroking a goat. Grandpa and a boy are sat by a house in the distance.

I went to Hay-on-Wye this summer, and found this lovely shop (it's the pink one called 'Rose's Books').

It had second-hand copies of every single one of my favourite childhood books, including lots I'd forgotten about, all lovingly organised and displayed. It was heaven! I nearly bought the original hardback of Anne of Green Gables that I first borrowed from the library when I was 11 (even though I've got the whole lot in paperback at home) but had to restrain myself because it was thirty quid.

bevjotom · 08/11/2007 22:33

mine was the borrowers,i loved it,think i might see if i can get it as it brings back lovely memories

havalina · 08/11/2007 23:33

OOh I loved the famous five, also a series by an author I can't remember, it featured 2 boys who were brothers who went on adventures to capture rare animals (think maybe one of them was called hal).
I also loved the silver sword and judy blume, must have missed the pony/ballet gene. Although
I did love the Sue Barton series. Seem to have gone from kids books straight to horror (my Mums influence) loved Stephen king et al.

havalina · 08/11/2007 23:35

Also sorry to add but what were the books were the girl broke her back on a swing, was it Anne of green gables or What Katy did? Or something else entirely?

IndulgeMePlease · 08/11/2007 23:37

What Katy Did!! Ooh, I loved that. And What Katy Did Next. And What Katy Did After That.

I may have made that last one up.

lullabyloo · 08/11/2007 23:39

I stayed with my aunty for a week one year and all she reads are Mills and Boon. Bloody awful. The 3 books I read had the same story just different names!!!

Linnet · 09/11/2007 00:10

The Lois Duncan wrote a book called stranger with my face? it's about a girl who discovers that she was adopted and that she was a twin. She keeps seeing herself in places or dreams and discovers that her twin is coming to her through astral projection. It's a good book and I still have it, might re-read it again soon.

I read loads as a child and I still read loads.

I also have an Enid Blyton theme,
read all of the Famous five, never read the secret seven.
Malory Towers
The islands of adventure etc series
another mystery series by Enid Blyton- the Ring O'Bells mystery etc
The naughtiest girl in the school?
Six cousins at mistletoe farm was another favourite
Mr Galliano's circus, I actually bought another copy of this from E-bay as I lost mine in a house move as a child.

Ballet shoes, I'm so excited to see that it's being made into a tv programme.

Children of Green Knowe, watched that on tv as well.
Milly Molly Mandy
Roald Dahl books
the Family of One End Street
I've read Charlotte sometimes by Penelope farmer
Toms Midnight Garden is also brilliant
there were ballet stories about a girl called Drina, still got those too.

When I was older I read Judy Blume and Paula Danzigar still have all of those as well.

Linnet · 09/11/2007 00:14

The eyes of Karen Connors by Lois duncan is another good book, it's about a girl who's psychic

bitsnbobs · 16/11/2007 18:42

Amelia Jane

My Naughty Little Sister and Bad Harry

Anything by Paula Danziger or Judy Blume
My Best Fiend

splishsplosh · 16/11/2007 20:13

Has anyone else ever read The Winter of Enchantment, about a magic mirror? I loved that book, in fact I must get it out again to re-read.
Lois Duncan books all really good
I can't remember if I mentioned it before on this thread but Seaward by Susan Cooper is good too.

GodzillasBumcheek · 16/11/2007 20:20

I have got away with reading lots of the best to my dtds at bedtime -

The entire Narnia series
The Faraway Tree books
The Demon Headmaster
My Naughty Little Sister
Mrs Mopple's Washing Line (it was the original copy too...can anyone else remember this?)

And many more.
Mallory towers is next.
We tried The Famous Five but i didn't get past book 1 because of the names. I just couldn't say Dick without smirking and the dtds just had hysterics whenever Aunt Fanny was mentioned!

vixma · 16/11/2007 20:22
