anywhere to get books when libraries shut?

i was just wondering i usually always get books from the library and read several a week, this is likely to increase while we are all at home. however obviously now libraries are all shut. i was wondering if there is any other way to borrow physical books? i don't want ebooks or online or anything but actual books. can't really afford to buy either as any spare money going towards increased food budget with kids at home. does anyone have any ideas or things i may not have thought of? i know bigger things to worry about at the moment but reading is my main escape and i have hardly any books left to read and it is stressing me out

The app is called libby. I think it's used by various local libraries.

lazylinguist · 23/03/2020 20:18

There are loads of free or very cheap books on Amazon for Kindle, OP. You don't need to sign up for anything or pay £7 a month.

fairydustandpixies · 23/03/2020 20:19

My county library service provides free ebooks and audio books online. I appreciate you don't want ebooks but these are free unlike kindle books/subscriptions.

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 20:20

We have read your actual responses.

Your attitude is really selfish and dangerous.

You would risk spreading the virus because you can't be bothered to read an e-book?

That's why people are angry with you.

SurpriseSparDay · 23/03/2020 20:24

I really wouldn’t pursue it, OP. I was wiping down library books fifteen years ago - and really stopped visiting any but academic / professional libraries once austerity made them very much less pleasant to visit. You don’t really want to take books that have passed through so many hands into your home right now, surely?

I understand about finding yourself with nothing to read, just at the moment when you need the distraction. But I’m certain whatever device you’re using to post will have access to a free trial of an ebooks app.

(A large proportion of my friends and colleagues completed postgrad dissertations courtesy of free Kindle and Google books sample chapters.)

And there’s an enormous amount of fiction / non-fiction available on the Internet, for free, even without signing up to anything. The complete works of Shakespeare for instance.

for the 3rd time i have said i will do the ebooks please there is no need for aggression

Don't worry OP nobody sensible is 'angry with you'.

It is preferable to switch to online as it is easier to get them, and they will be free, and you just need whatever you are accessing Mumsnet on.
A reasonable article from last week on the surface life of the virus from a reasonable source.

The project Gutenberg site is great, and doh will find all kinds of gems that you wouldn't normally read.

yummytummy · 23/03/2020 20:27

is the project gutenberg site a website?

OP posts:
SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 20:28

OP if you watch a programme called "the news" you might get why people are telling you home truths.

It isn't a personal attack. It's anger that you would be so selfish.

yummytummy · 23/03/2020 20:33

oh f off suckingdieselfella know when to stop

You were out and about at the weekend, right?

And other members of your household were too?

birdssingstartofspring · 23/03/2020 20:37

OP, I think this is hugely important, in fact.

I would also suggest the kindle but I understand that £7 is out of reach. I don’t know, really. Maybe some charity shops will try to open.

yummytummy · 23/03/2020 20:37

no i wasn't actually were you? go read a book

OP posts:
goldenorbspider · 23/03/2020 20:38

Borrow box completely free audiobooks and ebooks just need your library card number and pin x

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 20:44

OP, I have an underlying health condition.

You want to engage in social contact which would put people at risk.

And then you tell me to f off?

Classy.

YahBasic · 23/03/2020 20:45

Libby or BorrowBox apps both link up to your library subscription and you can download ebooks or audiobooks for free.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/03/2020 20:52

I get it. I loved books. I had cases of books- built up over the years, many bought in charity shops. Iwent to the library when I could. Then DHs job moved abroad... And I couldn't take them. It was an adjustment- but after a while it became obvious it was the stories not the physical books that mattered.

We are so lucky to have all this technology now.

wizbit93 · 23/03/2020 21:13

OP, I signed up for library ebooks yesterday. My library uses an app called Overdrive where I can get ebooks for free. You just have to put in your library card details.
My Mums local library uses Borrowbox. When I went on there I could only access audio books but she can get ebooks as well. I think it must depend on which service your County buy into.

waltzingparrot · 23/03/2020 21:20

Have you got a houseful of old paperbacks? Could you re-read some?

LotsaDo · 23/03/2020 22:08

OP...I'd avoid Mumsnet at the moment. People are being vicious. I get you, it's a really hard time and I hope you're ok. I haven't any advice really I'm afraid but I completely understand you. It's easy to preach if you have the money to buy e books or have the space to stay indoors all day. I really hope the next few week are ok for you.

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 22:16

Its a really hard time for those who plan to continue as normal and put other people at risk. They are rightly being called out for it.

E-books are free. She can get them through her own library. Download an app or put people at risk. Pretty easy choice, no?
