Grown ups- Marian Keyes

Has anyone read this? I finished it yesterday.

It's about 3 brothers, their wives and families.

It took me a while to get into it as there was a lot of characters at once. There is a family tree at the start which was useful as I did need to refer to that at the start! However, once I'd got used to the characters, it's a great book

Nothing will ever top Rachel's Holiday as her best book, but still up to her usual standards. Some of the characters are very unlikable (Liam, I'm talking about you) but others, e.g. Cara and Nell are likeable even though they have their flaws.

I'm waiting for the paperback!

KindKylie · 22/02/2020 23:13

I heard her talking about it on the Fortunately podcast (highly recommend) and it sounded good!

ChessieFL · 24/02/2020 19:09

I agree with you Spidey. I really enjoyed Grown UPS once I had worked out who everyone was!

simplificate · 25/02/2020 18:32

It was my first by her and I really enjoyed it. I'm usually not a fan of contemporary chick lit (my lighter reads tend to be from YA, SFF, crime genres instead) but this was lovely for scratching that Cazalet itch.

ParkheadParadise · 25/02/2020 18:42

I enjoyed it after I worked out who everyone was.
I love Marian Keyes
Rachel's Holiday
Watermelon
Angel's
Lucy Sullivan is getting Married

Shutityoujamtart · 25/02/2020 18:44

I’m reading it just now. I’m enjoying it but nothing will beat Watermelon. I loved it. I also really liked ‘is anybody out there?’

Dozer · 25/02/2020 18:44

Like Marian Keyes and agree that Rachel’s Holiday is her best. But like a PP am not prepared to pay hardback / new kindle release prices!

Mumof1andacat · 25/02/2020 18:47

I can recommend anybody out there. I was hooked!

ChessieFL · 25/02/2020 18:55

I love all the Walsh family books but Rachel’s Holiday is my favourite.

PopcornAndWine · 26/02/2020 15:12

Really enjoyed it, her last two books have been a return to form after a run of slightly less good ones. Very accurate about Irish extended families!

Agree re Rachel's Holiday, one of my favourite books ever.

TokyoSushi · 26/02/2020 15:18

Also waiting for Grown ups to become a bit cheaper! You've just reminded me about Rachels' Holiday though, I loved that book! Must be 15 years since I read it, cheap enough for a re-read now!

Franticbutterfly · 27/02/2020 06:55

I just wish she wouldn’t read the audiobooks herself. It’s better when an actor does it.

Knitwit99 · 27/02/2020 07:05

I'm listening to the audio book and really enjoying it.
Agree about Liam but I'm really interested in all the other characters.

I have s question though, what is the son with the name beginning with F called? What does it look like written down? I can't pick it up from listening.

SavoyCabbage · 27/02/2020 07:48

Rachel's holiday is on my library audio book app, RBDIGITAL so if yours has it it will probably be on there.

Spidey66 · 27/02/2020 10:16

@Knitwit99
Ferdia.
Not sure how it's pronounced though. I'm Irish descent and know a fair few Irish names but not come across this one!

Franticbutterfly I’m the opposite in that I generally prefer authors to read their own books because then you know it’s read in the way they intended.

Dozer · 27/02/2020 11:32

Is it on Audible?

Ulysses · 27/02/2020 11:57

I'm listening to it on audible too and must admit that I'm struggling with with a bit as I get distracted too easily! I looked for the book in Tesco yesterday as it's my friend's birthday and she's a big fan too. It wasn't there but might appear in the next couple of weeks and the hardback's usually go for a tenner there.

I do love her writing style, it's so clever in the way how much of it is relatable and funny at the same time. And she writes exactly how she speaks to so the audio is going down a treat for me.

Ulysses · 27/02/2020 11:57

I reactive my monthly audible subscription to get it for 7.99 @dozer.

Taytotots · 01/03/2020 23:58

Not enjoying it which is disappointing as I love her walsh family books. Too many characters and I can't really warm to any of them. Will persevere and hope it improves (but about half way through now so unlikely).

Knitwit99 · 12/03/2020 11:31

I'm still listening on audible and really enjoying it. I was in a bookshop last night and had to go and look up the father's name too, I couldn't pick it up from the reading. Canice? Another name I've never come across before.
That really annoys me about audio books, when I can't figure out someone's name, I don't know why it matters to me, but it does. I often find myself in bookshops looking up names.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 12/03/2020 11:34

I've got an audible credit or two so might give it a go.
Her last books imo have been atrocious, but Rachel, Lucy Sullivan, Sushi and Last Chance Saloon are my go to comfort food books.

EachandEveryone · 27/04/2020 21:51

Im listening on audio and its not really gripping me. I dont know why really. I expected some humour I suppose.

RedSoloCup · 27/04/2020 21:57

Her last one about walsh sisters was depressing and I'm a big fan.

charming man was good.

Deadringer · 27/04/2020 22:01

It took me a while to get into it, but i enjoyed it in the end. Not one if her best imo.
