Another science fantasy request list

moonlight1705 · 17/01/2020 12:05

I seem to have been through most of the science fantasy books that are suggested and need to expand my horizons further.

Things I've read and liked so you can see the type

Rivers of London
Trudy Canavan - all
Robin Hobb - all
Brandon Sanderson - all
The Name of the Wind & sequel (when is the third going to come out??)
Ursela le Guin - most
Neil Gaiman - most
Naomi Novik - all

I have not read any Terry Pratchett - which one might be worth starting if I go down that route? Should I try more science fiction although I'm not so keen on robots / space etc, I like magic worlds and mystery.

A friend if mine has just had her first book published, wizards, high fantasy etc.... Nit my cup of tea but gets good reviews on Amazon.

KC Julius - Portents of Chaos

Oakmaiden · 17/01/2020 15:57

I think my favourite author is Guy Gavriel Kay. He writes so very beautifully.

moonlight1705 · 17/01/2020 16:08

Yes I agree about Guy Gavriel Kay which reminds me to get more of those as I've not read them all.

The Void books by Peter F Hamilton are much more magic based.

Also the Greg Mandel by Peter F Hamilton ones could be worth a try. I do like his more techy ones as well as it's more about the people/interractions than the science for its own sake.

TechnicalSergeantGarp · 17/01/2020 16:26

Sanctuary series by Robert J Crane is a fantastic fantasy magic series and is on Kindle unlimited. My favourite series by this author is Southern Cross (it's very dark) and I love Girl in the Box (meta humans) too.

SM Reine is another good author too.

I'll have a look through my Kindle and will report back.

ThatLibraryMiss · 17/01/2020 17:39

Garth NIx's Abhorsen series - Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen and Goldenhand - are YA but very good.

Start Terry Pratchett's Discworld with either Guards! Guards! or Wyrd Sisters. He's pretty much got into his stride by then and the world's internally consistent. Don't bother with the ones after I Shall Wear Midnight, just remember what a wonderful writer he was before the Alzheimer's robbed him and the world of his humour and intellect.

The next Rivers of London, False Value, is supposed to be out on 20th February but the publication date's already slipped once. After publication date of The Hanging Tree got pushed by about two years I won't be pre-ordering.

Don't judge The Dark is Rising by the first book, Over Sea, Under Stone. It's just setting the scene for The Dark is Rising, a much better book IMO.

theproudgeek · 17/01/2020 18:19

Agree with thatlibrarymiss the second book of Dark is Rising is really when the story lifts off. Its a bit like Narnia, in that you get the most from book 1 by reading book 2 first. Just a note of caution, I love it but as it has a real world setting I suspect it may feel dated to someone reading it now.

Agree about Guy Gavriel Kay, if you haven't read 'Tigana' do search it out, the central premise is wonderfully played out.

Emma Bull
Garth Nix
Rosemary Kirstein
Patricia McKillip
Robin McKinley

hidingmystatus · 19/01/2020 01:48

Everything mentioned above, plus:
Stephen Donaldson, The Mirror of Her Dreams/Mordant's Need (two book series)
CS Friedman
CJ Cherryh Foreigner series (sci-fi political) and (if you can get them) the Rider pair of books (Cloud's Rider is one, can't remember the other title)

VittysCardigan · 19/01/2020 10:26

Becky Chambers - Wayfarers trilogy

TechnicalSergeantGarp · 19/01/2020 16:33

I know you op said you weren't keen on robots or space but I agree with Vitty

The Long Way to a Small Angry Plant which I book #1 of Becky Chambers - Wayfarers trilogy. I'm about to re-read the first two again to get ready for the third book.

Glaciferous · 19/01/2020 16:57

Oh yes, Becky Chambers is great. I have read all three. Not sure about the third, tbh, but the other two are fantastic.

moonlight1705 · 19/01/2020 18:00

Will check it out once I've got through some of the other suggestions Smile

My parents were into Isaac Asimov which really didn't appeal to me so I've not tried much out of my comfort zone thus this thread.

I'd second Diana Wynn Jones, V E Schwab and Benedict Jacka. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo is also good, currently a standalone rather than a series - although I also like her YA series.

If you like fantasy with a non-eurocentric myth base then S A Chakraborty's City of Brass series and Tasha Suri's Empire of Sand are both very good. I also really liked The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. If you liked Naomi Novik's Uprooted/Spinning Silver books then check out Katharine Arden's The Bear and the Nightingale series (based on Russian folk tales).

skintbutok · 19/01/2020 18:15

Tad Williams, start with The Dragonbone Chair
David Eddings, Belgariad series
Ian Irving, The view from the mirror series

TechnicalSergeantGarp · 19/01/2020 18:35

I love Isaac Asimov.

BlatheringOn · 19/01/2020 18:36

Have you read White Silence and the follow-on, Dark Light, by Jodi Taylor - still her style but very different from St Mary's. I've just reread the two and was gripped all over again.
Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky - a touch of sentimentality but a good read.
The Book of Etta by Meg Ellison - leaves you thinking.
The Sudden Appearance of Hope - Claire North

Faircastle · 19/01/2020 18:38

If you enjoy Rivers of London then you may like the Crow Investigations series by Sarah Painter.

VittysCardigan · 19/01/2020 21:16

Agree with PP about Bear & Nightingale books

GingerBeverage · 19/01/2020 21:19

China Mieville - Perdido Street Station
Marie Brennan - A Natural History of Dragons series
Tade Thompson - Rosewater (Wormwood Trilogy)
And if you want a big chunky series Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn.

amiw · 19/01/2020 21:29

theproudgeek · 20/01/2020 16:00

PrincessSarene thank you for reminding me about Glenda Larke, I read her 'Heart of the Mirage' series ages okay and was very impressed. I didn't realise she had written other things.
