Another science fantasy request list

moonlight1705 · 17/01/2020 12:05

I seem to have been through most of the science fantasy books that are suggested and need to expand my horizons further.

Things I've read and liked so you can see the type

Rivers of London
Trudy Canavan - all
Robin Hobb - all
Brandon Sanderson - all
The Name of the Wind & sequel (when is the third going to come out??)
Ursela le Guin - most
Neil Gaiman - most
Naomi Novik - all

I have not read any Terry Pratchett - which one might be worth starting if I go down that route? Should I try more science fiction although I'm not so keen on robots / space etc, I like magic worlds and mystery.

Jodi Taylor - Chronicles of St. Mary's series

ImportantWater · 17/01/2020 13:49

I’ve just started a series which is quite similar to Rivers of London, by Paul Cornell, think the first one is London Falling.
With Terry Pratchett I would start with Mort or Guards Guards.
Have you read The Magicians by Lev Grossman? Or going old school, the Dragonriders series by Anne McCaffrey? In terms of science fiction, I absolutely loved Vernor Vinge’s A Deepness in the Sky and A Fire Upon The Deep, but although they do have the mystery worlds element to them, there is quite a lot of sci Fi in there as well. No robots as far as I remember!

I like lots on your list and I would say maybe Connie Willis? Also I love Neuromancer which my terrible username makes clear. Neuromancer is a bit spacey and sciencey but mostly just a magical world of spacey science.

Dancingontheedge · 17/01/2020 13:52

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

1vandal2 · 17/01/2020 13:58

The ardalia trilogy by Alan Spade was good. An epic fantasy without human characters and magical.
The pearl saga by Eric van lustbader another epic fantasy with a small amount of alien and plenty of magic and some demons

1vandal2 · 17/01/2020 14:03

Wizardy type stuff I'd recommend The Mage tales by Illana Waters, vampires, magic and very amusing. There's a prequel trilogy best read after the main series too.
The nate temple series by Shayne Silvers. All sorts of magical creatures and clever storylines that interlock with two other series 4 or 5 books in.

moonlight1705 · 17/01/2020 14:04

Ooh lovely suggestions, I've read Chronicles of St Mary's and adore it too but shall investigate the others as they all look intriguing.

If you've read all of Robin Hobb, have you also read Megan Lindholm? (Same lady, more realistic settings with fantasy.)

I'm currently reading Ailette de Bodard, she writes lovely lyrical fantasy and science fiction. Start with 'House of Shattered Wings' set in an alternate Paris with fallen angels and Vietnamese Dragons.

Also if you have read Brandon Sanderson have you also read Robert Jordan's 'Wheel of Time' sequence which Sanderson completed after Jordan's death. It also has the benefit of being completed, unlike lots of fantasy sequences.

randomsabreuse · 17/01/2020 14:06

SM Stirling Dies the Fire
Elizabeth Hunter Elemental Mysteries
Anne McCaffrey
Genevieve Cogman Invisible Library

theproudgeek · 17/01/2020 14:09

Oh and Lois McMaster Bujold, her sci-fi series about Miles Vorkosigan and family is brilliant, with a central mystery to be solved in most of them. Yes its rocket ships, but really its about the effect if technology on people. She also has a fantasy series(World of the Five Gods) that starts with 'Curse of Chalion'.

IpanemaGallina · 17/01/2020 14:11

Iain M Banks. I really liked Against a Dark Background.

Booboostwo · 17/01/2020 14:11

The Expanse series is very good.
As is Adrian Tchaikovski's work.

Flimflamfloogety · 17/01/2020 14:13

Demon Cycle Series by Peter V Brett
World of Linaria Series by L.L McNeil
The Rigante series by David Gemmell
The Magician by Raymond E Feist
The Elenium by David Eddings

Booboostwo · 17/01/2020 14:15

Sorry I just saw the less robots/space, more magic...so

The Invisible Library series
Naomi Novik's dragon series
G.R.R. Martin of course

and why not some classics? Tolkien or The Dark is Rising series

3jane · 17/01/2020 14:18

Second Dark is Rising if you haven’t read it.

moonlight1705 · 17/01/2020 14:20

Love the Invisible Library and Wheel of Time as well but will check out Dark is Rising as I've not read that.

OP posts:
theproudgeek · 17/01/2020 14:26

Think I'm going to check out the Invisible Library, it keeps getting mentioned in the same breath as favourite authors.

RedPandaFluff · 17/01/2020 14:49

Has anyone read the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony? There's the occasional cringey/old-fashioned bit but overall it's a great fantasy series and I love how the seven books all interweave.

CuteOrangeElephant · 17/01/2020 14:51

Katherine Arden - The bear and the nightingale.

moonlight1705 · 17/01/2020 15:01

RedPanda - I used to read his Xanth series as a teenager but reread some this year and was disgusted by how sexist it was - is the Immortality series like that?

theproudgeek - definitely read Invisible Library, such a great concept.

I've just ordered the first Dark is Rising book on kindle so will check that out later.

SpoonBlender · 17/01/2020 15:22

Piers Anthony is far to paedophilic and misogynist to read. Incarnations is better than Xanth but still pretty poor. Don't bother.

As prior posters please do try Pratchett - Guards! Guards! is a great starter. The first couple of books are all pastiche, the next two are getting his feet, so skip and go back and read them later once you're hooked.
Ari Marmell's "Mick Oberon" hardboiled elf detective series
Lois Bujold, Sharing Knife books
Stephen Brust, Taltos series
Seanan McGuire, October Daye series
Anything by "T Kingfisher" (actually Ursula Vernon, but she writes kids books and didn't want them searching up her less kid work accidentally) - Clockwork Boys is a great place to start.

iklboo · 17/01/2020 15:26

Yes to The Dresden Files.

SpoonBlender · 17/01/2020 15:27

A. Lee Martinez, anything
Max Gladstone, the Craft sequence
Graydon Saunders, Commonweal series (available on non-Amazon ebook sources - Google Books eg), start with book 2 "A Succession of Bad Days" unless you really love being confused by in media res writing, book 1 "The March North" is really hard to get into. I love these books deeply, and the fifth is out tomorrow.

Glaciferous · 17/01/2020 15:37

V E Schwab is good. There's a trilogy that starts with A Darker Shade of Magic that I think you might really like.

TabbyM · 17/01/2020 15:44

Benedect Jacka's Alex Verus books staring with Fated
Diana Wynne Jones - both childrens' and adult
Anything by Patricia McKillip
Rachel Neumeier's Griffin Mage trilogy
