A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler

Quite a few hours of my life I won’t get back there ...

NYnachos · 13/01/2020 01:27

Blood orange - a good read!

Tuliptulip · 13/01/2020 01:44

White Teeth, Zadie Smith
The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hathorne
The Greengage Summer, Rumer Godden (clearly the last one is a cheat, but I love the book!)

Thanks OP! Just noticed you’d replied with the list

I enjoyed 'The girl in the red coat'

Orange is not the only fruit.

The land of green ginger, The Bluest eye, when hitler stole pink rabbit, black water

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/01/2020 14:49

You may be the first person on here who’s also heard of The Land of Green Ginger, @toomuchsplother. My party piece is that I can recite the spell that turns the magician back to himself, from memory. It isn’t much, but it is my talent! Grin

toomuchsplother · 18/01/2020 17:15

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I am aware of that Land of Green ginger but I was actually thinking of the Winnifred Holtby book by the same name. Odd that there are 2 books with the same name!!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/01/2020 18:24

Very odd, @toomuchsplother!

Clymene · 18/01/2020 18:26

Oh read The Colour. One of my all time favourite books.

Jux · 22/01/2020 15:16

SDTG Land of Green Ginger was one of my favourite childhood books (and The Phantom Tollbooth). I got new copies for dd and she loved them. We used to use 'boomalakka wee' as an exclamation.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/01/2020 16:07

I always want to add ‘like a donkey who has sat on a pin’ whenever someone says ‘like an arrow from a bow’, @Jux.

‘The colour of Bee Larkham’s murder.’ That’s a quirky read!

FoxInABox · 25/01/2020 23:37

I’m probably a bit late but Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is fantastic.
