SDTG Land of Green Ginger was one of my favourite childhood books (and The Phantom Tollbooth). I got new copies for dd and she loved them. We used to use 'boomalakka wee' as an exclamation.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I am aware of that Land of Green ginger but I was actually thinking of the Winnifred Holtby book by the same name. Odd that there are 2 books with the same name!!

You may be the first person on here who’s also heard of The Land of Green Ginger, @toomuchsplother. My party piece is that I can recite the spell that turns the magician back to himself, from memory. It isn’t much, but it is my talent!

Came on to say A Spool of Blue Thread or Crimson Petal and the White, but see they're already here. Can echo the recommendations though!

Although if you're worried about slow readers the latter is a big book (I loved it though, probably more than the Tyler)
