I’m probably a bit late but Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is fantastic.

‘The colour of Bee Larkham’s murder.’ That’s a quirky read!

I always want to add ‘like a donkey who has sat on a pin’ whenever someone says ‘like an arrow from a bow’, @Jux.

SDTG Land of Green Ginger was one of my favourite childhood books (and The Phantom Tollbooth). I got new copies for dd and she loved them. We used to use 'boomalakka wee' as an exclamation.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I am aware of that Land of Green ginger but I was actually thinking of the Winnifred Holtby book by the same name. Odd that there are 2 books with the same name!!

You may be the first person on here who’s also heard of The Land of Green Ginger, @toomuchsplother. My party piece is that I can recite the spell that turns the magician back to himself, from memory. It isn’t much, but it is my talent! Grin

White Teeth, Zadie Smith
The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hathorne
The Greengage Summer, Rumer Godden (clearly the last one is a cheat, but I love the book!)

OP, can you try again to share the list? Might try to do this independently. I always struggle to choose which book to read next, so this could be fun

Came on to say A Spool of Blue Thread or Crimson Petal and the White, but see they're already here. Can echo the recommendations though!

Although if you're worried about slow readers the latter is a big book (I loved it though, probably more than the Tyler)

Thankyiu all so much for these suggestions lots to get going with - might retread the colour purple after all . February's theme is a book that's been made into a film so would also be ideal fir the people who take time to savour a book ( slowcreaders!)

Red rising... dystopian fiction I wasn't a big fan and gave up.
