a flavour for those who haven't read it..

now let me think...master david was out having riding instruction. that's what started it all. miss hannah were none too happy to have been left out, so she bundled up miss emmeline and gave nanny brown the slip....

oh yes nancy said matter-of-factly, polishing fiercely.

I am going to have to double wrap it and take it to the tip buried in an old blanket

ROFL @ your extract.

I bet there will be another scandal and we will discover they are getting kickbacks from publishers (note to legal dept: this is pure speculation, I have no evidence for it whatsoever, other than the fact that the books are shit).

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2007 08:45

so richard and judy recommends is

the same as zippi recommends book burning

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 28/08/2007 08:47

I should have guessed this as i don't read heat or closer watch big brother or richard and judy

Not all the R&J recommended books are crap, although seeing the R&J sticker certainly wouldn't encourage me to buy one. I've just finished The Savage Garden which I enjoyed. I didn't know it was a R&J until I bought it and saw the sticker.

I'm pretty sure they don't choose the books themselves. I don't think either of them have the concentration span needed to actually read a whole book, let alone a collection of books.

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2007 09:06

I thought it might be a light read rather than total trash

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 28/08/2007 09:08

I just read atonement which I class as a light read

LOLOL Fio, not a fan of HFW either then? I think we all know what happens to fancy Lunnoners if they try smallholding in less chichi parts of rural England
I am not convinced by the R & J thing either, but it has boosted the sale of books in general in the UK, and the publishing industry at least thinks they are demigods. They are fuelling book groups and people talking more about what they are reading, which is good - especially if children are seeing their parents (OK, probably mothers) reading for pleasure.

Marina · 28/08/2007 09:09

Agree that book sounds dire though zippi.
Like Bran, am quite enjoying The Savage Garden, although we have reached a smouldering Italian bosom interlude (yawn)

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2007 09:11

well i had become aware that they were supposedly doing good stuff promoting reading and thought they were promoting proper books

Marina · 28/08/2007 09:13

One can always live in hope zippi. I have a sneaking suspicion that there is an unhealthy number of Harper Perennial titles on their list but have never followed that up by counting and checking

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2007 09:19

what are harp[er perennials..a sort of book equivalent of werthers originals?

OP posts:
TheArmadillo · 28/08/2007 09:21

I don't watch R&J but 3 books I have enjoyed recently have had their stickers on front.

The Historian
The Labyrinth
The Time Traveller's WIfe.

The book you're reading sounds crud though.

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2007 09:22

I think I am in a sullen and disagreeable frame of mind as they probably would say in riverton house

OP posts:
Marina · 28/08/2007 09:23

Harper Perennial is a BIG publishing conglomerate - so yes, Werthers just about sums it up. Paperbacks as units to be placed at checkouts and shifted in bulk

Marina · 28/08/2007 09:24

LOL - is there no possibility of taking a walk today then?

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2007 09:25

I am going to the gym and swimming and getting back for the builder who claims to be coming to lay a brick at noon which should occupy him until tea time with a few hours off in between

It's caca, that book. I read 2 pages & dropped it in disgust. Now reading Memory Keeper's Daughter, which I had my doubts about before I started reading, & am completely hooked.
