I think I might have done this thread last year
Xmas Smile

What books are you hoping to receive for Christmas 2019?

I love to get books for Christmas! What I'm always hoping for is someone giving me a book if not thought of and really get immersed in . Or indeed several!

Second to that I'd like to receive some book tokens.

Despite the fact I have a ginormous pile of books on my to read pile(s). Xmas Grin

I think receiving/buying books is getting to be a fetish with me Xmas Confused

The illustrated Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Just started reading Prisoner of Azkaban to my nearly 6 year old, the illustrations are lovely.

tobee · 18/12/2019 16:41

Ooh my (now adult) dd loves Harry Potter!

I love them, read them all as they came out. And my husband has been buying the illustrated ones for Christmas as they have been coming out.

I also asked for a cookery book of the foods from Skyrim. (so geeky, love it)

How Girl Guides won the War (title not exact)- a history of Guides in wartime. Came across it when organising a Remembrance service for my Cubs

Latest Jack Reacher and Scott Mariani

I know I will get these... Because I'm buying them for myself.

I've got Prisoner of Azkaban illustrated for my DD... We started with philosopher's stone last Christmas, then Chamber of Secrets for her birthday. Not sure when we will move on to Goblet if Fire, she's rather sensitive and they do start to ramp up a bit.

tobee · 18/12/2019 22:11

Ooh this is turning into a thread to help me with present buying for others. Smile

A book on spss statistics. Dull as dishwasher and quite possibly the most depressing thing I'll ever own but I need it for uni, (I suck absolute balls at spss so it's really needed), and I can't afford it.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure I won't get it because the only people who buy for me won't spend that much.

Spacebowlisback · 18/12/2019 22:42

I’m after The Starless Sea and The Song of Achilles.

HelenaJustina · 18/12/2019 22:46

Olive Kitteridge and Olive Again
Time Police
The memoir from Princess Margaret’s LiW

tobee · 19/12/2019 23:23

I just found out what SPSS statistics is (are?) ! Grin

The Man on a Donkey by H.F, M Prescott. It inspired Hilary Mantel and has been re-published this year for the first time since it was written.

I'd also like two or three, or twenty or thirty, Persephone books! Not Dorothy Whipple, as I've read all hers. I bought them myself and it was money well spent!

8paws8legs · 19/12/2019 23:31

The disney twisted tales, I've not read any of them before but think the darker side to tales I loved as a kid will be really interesting!

Pinkyrosie · 19/12/2019 23:33

Hoping I get this

The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper

Looks fascinating

CrossingTheAlpsInOtley · 19/12/2019 23:35

I listened to The Five on Audio and loved it. She has done a huge amount of research but wears it lightly and it really does make these women come alive.

She also has an interesting take on the prostitute element, one which seems pretty plausible to me.

I might buy the hardback as a present to me, so that I can read it at leisure.

AfterSomeAdvice1234 · 19/12/2019 23:59

RoryGillmoreseviltwin what are you using SPSS for? Sorry to hijack the thread but the introduction to R book is great (and cheap!) for those interested in biological (but quantitative) data x

HelenaJustina · 20/12/2019 10:13

I am also coveting a nice hardback edition of the second Book of Dust trilogy

HowlsMovingBungalow · 20/12/2019 10:15

Song of Achilles is a good read.

I prefer book tokens myself so I can mooch for books.

MaJoady · 20/12/2019 10:16

I've asked for the Book of Dust Part 2 and Tombland now it's in paperback as easy presents from DP's family. So I hope I'll get those.

Also think I'm getting Gallows Pole from someone who was asking leading questions about my reading habits while we were in Waterstones Grin But that's also good because it's been on my reading list for a while too.

I love getting books from people (and for people), but I rarely get surprises. I'm always the one recommending books to others (and seem to be good at judging their tastes), but they seem to be a bit intimidated picking me a surprise book. I read more than anyone else in my or DP's family and they assume I've read most things I think. Little do they know there is never enough time or money to read everything I'd like...!

tobee · 20/12/2019 15:11

Ooh I picked up The Five as an audible book in one of their sales! Haven't listened yet.

You're in for a treat, @tobee.

Bezalelle · 21/12/2019 13:03

I think DH has got me "Lyra's Oxford" for Hanukkah!! I'm on a massive Pullman binge at the moment so I'm pretty excited.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 21/12/2019 18:41

Just reserved The Five from my library (support your local library!) on the back of many recommendations.

Sarcelle · 21/12/2019 18:46

Book by Lady Glenconner - Princess Margarets's friend and lady in waiting.

Didiusfalco · 21/12/2019 18:47

I would like Decline and Fail by John Crace, as his column is the only political thing that I could stomach through this depressing election and ‘The Writers Map’ which looks really lovely. I don’t think I’m getting either.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/12/2019 19:01

I’d like Katherine’s House by Sarah Hogg. It’s a history of a medieval hall which is still lived in (by the author). I used to live in the village and have always loved the house.

BootyMcBootFace · 22/12/2019 12:38

I'm hoping for Second Sleep by Robert Harris. And also the reissued hardback version of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It's a bit indulgent when I already have a battered copy in paperback but I know it's one I'll reread and it looks so beautiful.
