Fantasy sci/fi series for dh

Fredy45 · 23/11/2019 17:58

He had read a lot of fantasy and some sci fi but hasn't picked up a series for ages and I thought i'd get him a first book in a newish series for Christmas

He likes proper goblins and elves type stuff, all prachett, no gaiman (peasant), Asimov, Ian m banks. No game of thrones, no urban fantasy

Any ideas? Something new this year would be great as I know he won't have read it.

SF: Ancilliary Justice, The Three Body Problem, The Fifth Season, The Machineries of Empire
Fantasy, hmmmm: Spinning Silver? But it's not a series!

Pierce brown: red rising saga
Leigh bardugo : the geisha series and then there is a follow on series

CJ Cherryh Foreigner series; Lois McMaster Bujold (anything); David Weber (space opera with naval flavour); David Eddings (easy reading); A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet series.

TheWitchwithNoName · 24/11/2019 17:16

Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy, there are also another two books set later on and another on the way. Shadow March by the same author is also good, as are the Otherland books - an awesome mix of fantasy and sci-fi.

StarlingsInSummer · 24/11/2019 17:17

Robin Hobb, definitely.

Howzaboutye · 24/11/2019 17:28

Rivers of London series is good

Fredy45 · 24/11/2019 20:54

Howza I love rivers of London. Way too urban for him. He likes David Eddings so similar to this would be good. I shall get on amazon and go through these, thanks again

The wool trilogy by Hugh somebody. Brilliant.

Xiaoxiong · 25/11/2019 20:09

The Culture novels!! My favourites are Player of Games and Excession, you don't necessarily have to read them in order. Absolutely love them.

Xiaoxiong · 25/11/2019 20:12

Oh just saw he likes Ian M Banks already.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is great, if he hasn't read that.

Flimflamfloogety · 25/11/2019 20:14

I'm a huge Eddings fan... I've just gotten into the World of Linaria series, it's by an independently published author
www.llmcneil.com/books/

Also a big fan of The Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson

David Gemmell is a good shout too

QuentinWinters · 25/11/2019 20:15

Yes Robin Hobb. Assassins Apprentice series.

Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

Flimflamfloogety · 25/11/2019 20:16

Sorry thought of some more

Trudy Canavan - Black Magician trilogy
Peter V Brett - Demon Cycle series

PetraDelphiki · 25/11/2019 20:53

Not goblins and elves but I highly recommend janny wurts curse of the mistwraith series. Also Raymond first magician series. Shannara? First one very derivative of lord or the rings but they do actually get much better!

PetraDelphiki · 25/11/2019 20:54

Oh yes Trudy Canavan too!!

cdtaylornats · 25/11/2019 21:16

Jack Vance's Lyonesse series
Poul Anderson The Broken Sword
Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series
if he likes puns Piers Anthony's Xanth series
Christopher Stasheff's Warlock series (a mix of sci fi and fantasy)
Terry Brooks - Shannara and Magic Kingdom series
Kieth R.A. DeCandido - Dragon Precinct series
Gordon R. Dickson - Dragon Knight series
Alan Dean Foster - Spellsinger series
Michael Moorcock - Elric series
Jonathan Stroud - Bartimaeus series, Lockwood & Co series
Roger Zelazny - Amber series

Fredy45 · 27/11/2019 20:07

Good lord you lot this is immense! There are some titles I know he has so hopefully I can plug a gap where I see similar suggestions

Honestly, so helpful thanks

Has anyone mentioned Scott Lynch? The lies of Locke Lamora is pretty entertaining, as are the other two in the series.

fishonabicycle · 09/12/2019 14:19

A long way to a small angry planet ( and the others in this series).

Binglebong · 09/12/2019 14:51

The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothsomething. Has a sequel but waiting for last part of the trilogy to come out.

Another saying Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. He's also started another series- stormlight (starting The Way of the King) which is immense.

Elizabeth Moon Deed of Paksenarrion.

The Barbed Coil (can't remember author)

Marriedtoapenguin · 30/12/2019 11:00

As a curve ball, how about comics like Fables or Saga?

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 01/01/2020 13:13

The fionavar trilogy!

Littletabbyocelot · 03/01/2020 21:31

I was just about to recommend the finovar trilogy. It depends on if he can handle stories that start in the real world. My dad (who brought me up on Eddings and Lord of the Rings) couldn't stand anything real world based.

So many of my favourites here (and some new ones to try). Can I add the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix and Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea trilogy.
