I've just finished The Small Hand by Susan Hill, I've ready The Silent Companions, Most Sarah Waters and Michelle Paver. I want a bit of a mystery, ghosts (but not horror) and something that I won't be able to put down.

What do you suggest?

I’ve got these short story books by Susan Hill. Both are good.

The Hogfather! Spooky Christmas in print!

Alabasterangel6 · 13/11/2019 18:06

Victorian gothic widow splendour with chillly creepy feeling (a bit like the woman in black) is the companion by Laura Purcell. Halfway through and can’t put it down!

Alabasterangel6 · 13/11/2019 18:08

Also - properly scary - a book called eight ghosts published by English heritage with proceeds going to them. Eight well known authors wrote a short fiction story based on an English heritage location and a thread of historical fact. The book is brilliant; every story good.

MsMustDoBetter · 13/11/2019 20:32

I've read all of these with exception of The Hogfather. I've never read Pratchett, but this might be the one!

Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse.

AuntieMarys · 24/11/2019 13:31

Anything by Laura Purcell.
Starve Acre by Andrew Micharl Hurley is amazing

InterstellarDrifter · 24/11/2019 13:35

I was looking for the same and came across this

Bl00mingCactus · 24/11/2019 15:54

The ending of The Corset is annoying so be warned.. I loved both the Michelle Paver books.

newdeer · 24/11/2019 15:57

The Somnambulist by Essie Fox is atmospheric and Gothic and spooky.

Have you read the classics? Jekyll & Hyde is the best imo but Frankenstein and Dracula are also wonderful. So are The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Austen's spoof Northanger Abbey.

Bl00mingCactus · 24/11/2019 16:19

Ooo yes to the classics- Jane Eyre,Wuthering Heights etc. Not quite so classical but all the Daphne du Maurier books are good.

DrCoconut · 24/11/2019 20:02

The mistletoe bride. Can anyone remember who it's by?

Bl00mingCactus · 24/11/2019 20:13

Isn’t it a Kate Mosse short story collection.

ironickname · 24/11/2019 21:13

@InterstellarDrifter

I've just ordered the Peter Straub one from that list. Looks perfect.

Thank you.

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 25/11/2019 14:58

Bl00ming I just gave a friend that edition of Woman in Black. I love the stories and that copy is beautiful.

I was going to suggest The Taking of annie thorne but I'm not sure if it tips into horror or creepy. I did go around putting on lights and startling at sudden noises after it Grin

Looking forward to reading some of the others that have been recommended.

InterstellarDrifter · 25/11/2019 15:58

@ironickname looks like a great choice.
I’ve ordered this book but it’s more thriller than spooky

The Girl in the Photograph by Kate Riordan was an enjoyable read. A bit eerie but not scary.
