I'm taking the sleeper train to Venice and back by myself next weekend.

Can anyone recommend novels set in Venice or on trains?

Night Visitor by Gillian White. (Middle section set in Venice.)
The Sleeper by Emily Barr.

Both are psychological thrillers.

Miss Garnet's Angel by Sally Vickers
The City of Falling Angels by John Berendt
One Summer in Venice by Nicky Pellegrino

There are lots of others but I can recommend those three

MinnieMountain · 02/11/2019 06:56

Thank you. I've downloaded Miss Garnets Angel and One Summer in Venice.

I've just finished The Prison Doctor. It was brilliant!

PorridgeBowlHairCut · 02/11/2019 07:05

I loved Jan Morris’ Venice book. I am so jealous of your trip. Are you orient expressing it or other train?

Otavis · 02/11/2019 07:07

Part of Kate O’Brien’s The Flower of May is set in very early 20thc Venice.

AwkwardSquad · 02/11/2019 07:07

Oh how lovely. No books to recommend but just wanted to say what a great idea! November is a good time to visit Venice, it’s quieter so easier to get around.

AwkwardSquad · 02/11/2019 07:09

I can add one recommendation - ‘In the company of the courtesan’ by Sarah Dunant

MinnieMountain · 02/11/2019 10:19

Eurostar and sleeper train but I've got a cabin to myself. I'm just spending Saturday in Venice. Friday and Saturday nights will be on the train.

Sounds gorgeous, OP. I was in Venice for the first time last August, and found it magical if you avoided the hordes marching glumly between the railway station and the Piazza San Marco. And the art was astonishing, and I had it almost to myself, even in peak tourist season.

tripfiction · 02/11/2019 15:25

In the Company of the Courtesan and Miss Garnet's Angel are must reads for Venice and a good story. The City of Falling Angels is good for the city. Try books by Philip Gwynne Jones for a murder mystery ...

If you want a curated list of books set in Venice, try this link: www.tripfiction.com/find-a-book/?location=Venice&btitle=&bauthor=&genre=Genre...

And 3 weeks ago I was travelling on a train and read Violet by SJI Holliday, give that a go for an engrossing book set on a train!!!

"Don't Look Now" short story by Daphne du Maurier
My son and his wife came back from their honeymoon in Venice yesterday. They went to a lot of the locations from the film. Strange child...Grin

ChessieFL · 03/11/2019 07:33

The obvious one is Murder On The Orient Express by Agatha Christie!

MinnieMountain · 03/11/2019 08:38

Hmm. I wonder if I can turn straight round and repeat the trip so I have time to read all these great suggestions.

Even though I'm not into crime as a rule, Murder On The Orient Express is clearly a must.

If you like ghost stories you should read Susan Hill's 'The Man in the Picture' which is set in Venice. It's bloody terrifying though!

NotMaryWhitehouse · 05/11/2019 05:15

I second 'Venice' by Jan Morris, it is really quite unique!

V1daw1inter · 05/11/2019 06:49

The Daphne Du Maurier one- Don’t Look Now I think.

V1daw1inter · 05/11/2019 07:02

Saw The Venetian Game in Waterstones which looked good but can’t vouch for it. Don’t Look Now and The Man in the Picture are short stories which might be good for a train journey.

bibliomania · 06/11/2019 16:35

Donna Leon has written a lengthy crime fiction series in Venice.

YesILikeItToo · 07/11/2019 03:15

The Thief Lord is a children’s book always recommended to young travellers, I read it with Dd in Venice. It’s pretty good, and it features loads of Venice Stuff that really chimes with a visit.

Death in Venice, on the other hand, features a limited part of the Lido. On the plus side - it is for adults, and a real classic.

AgentProvocateur · 07/11/2019 03:40

Daphne du maurier - Don’t look now. It’s a short story set in Venice and it’s terrifying.

bibliomania · 07/11/2019 09:21

I'd also recommend "Venice for Pleasure, by J G Links". It's a book of walks, but he also talks about his love of the city and it's very readable even if you don't do the walks.

bibliomania · 07/11/2019 09:22

And you have to come back next week and tell us what you read and enjoyed so we know who wins the thread...

MinnieMountain · 10/11/2019 14:28

I read Murder on the Orient Express on the way to Paris, then Miss Garnet's Angel.

Both were excellent suggestions to give the right atmosphere.

I've started One Summer in Venice but it's not really gripping me.

The Jan Morris book is waiting for l
when I want reminding of Venice.

The sleeper train was good fun BTW. Aside from the 2.5 hour delay coming bsck
