I love detective books (particularly murders) but my favourite is Susan Hill.
I'd like any reccomendations for new ones to try that are british as i like to understand where they are, the police system etc.
Any ideas?

New to you, or recently published?

If the former, you could stick with the Hills and read Reginald Hill. He’s a wonderful writer.

I’m also a big fan of Alison Taylor; her books are set on the Welsh border.

Barry Maitland is an Australian writer, but his police procedural dare set in England. He’s a terrific writer.

There’s Stuart McBride and Aline Templeton in Scotland and Tana French in Ireland.

Will look at all your suggestions thank you!
I meant new to me as long as they're not too dated

The DI Nick Dixon series is very good, set in current times, Somerset based, engaging characters. But start from the first book (of 7).

MsFenellaFielding · 27/07/2019 23:01

Mark Billingham's Tom Thorne series - just off to bed to start the latest.

Some great recommendations here. I particularly like Anne Cleeves and Ellie Griffiths’ Ruth Galloway but I’ve taken a few recommendations myself.

Denise Mina is another one.

My all time favourite is Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford.

Graham Hurley - his DI Faraday series. Mostly set in Portsmouth.

The one and only P D James.
Maybe a bit dated but the characterisation is second to none.
Ruth Rendell. I take it you’ve read Agatha Christie.

Blatant place marking

Clawdy · 28/07/2019 17:13

FossiPajuZeka · 28/07/2019 20:46

Do you like Sherlock Holmes? There's a series of new Sherlock Holmes books by Titan Books some of which are apparently good (or so I gather - I saw a snippet in Publisher's Weekly saying that one of them was the best Sherlock Holmes pastiche ever)

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 28/07/2019 22:04

Margaret Kirk's detective novels are based in Inverness. So far she has published 2: Shadow Man and What Lies Buried. She's working on the 3rd one in the series.

tripfiction · 29/07/2019 20:14

You could try L J Ross.. all her books are set around Northumberland and Tyneside and she has a huge following

BestIsWest · 29/07/2019 21:37

I also like the Inspector Lynley books - Elizabeth George. They are very chunky though.
