I love detective books (particularly murders) but my favourite is Susan Hill.
I'd like any reccomendations for new ones to try that are british as i like to understand where they are, the police system etc.
Any ideas?

Alan Parks Bloody January & February’s son brilliant reads he is an ex copper and books are based in Glasgow

Phil Rickman is amazing and incredibly knowledgeable about Britain's folklore and history as well as police procedure ! And another vote for the great Ian Rankin.

fleshmarketclose · 05/08/2019 20:39

I've enjoyed the Michael Robotham books both the Joe O'Loughlin and the Cyrus Haven series.

BubblegumFactory · 05/08/2019 20:39

I second Lllot5 - PD James was just a great, great writer - so good at character, atmosphere and plot. Ruth Rendell my second favourite and agree, Agatha Christie is a must!

I love Ann Cleeves' series. She's contemporary but her style is quite old school - not too grisly.

Sarah Hilary does interesting police procedurals with a lot of jeopardy in them. I read that she makes it up as she goes along, without plotting in advance, so she's as surprised as the reader to find out who did what and why. I think this shows in her writing as it doesn't feel too schematic or engineered. The plot is always surprising yet believable.

Alex Gray (Glasgow)
Christopher Brookmyre (especially if you like murders with a dose of black humour)
Caro Ramsay
CJ Sansom if you like historical murders and also Ellis Peters
Mari Hannah

I love Susan Hill. P D James is very much in the same mould if you've not read her (but how have you not if you haven't!) Dalgleish and Seraillier are very similar.

Have you read S J Bolton Sacrifice etc? And Tana French. Both excellent.

MangoSpice · 05/08/2019 20:57

Denzil Merrick's books are great. Based in Scotland and he uses a lot of regional slang so you might need a translator Wink.

TuffersTickler · 05/08/2019 20:58

I love P.D. James - Adam Dalgleish and the very few (3 I think) Cordelia Gray books.

TuffersTickler · 05/08/2019 20:59

Agree with @Lllot5 and @BubblegumFactory! P.D. James was the best!

Totally not placemarking.

Adding in the Agathe Raisin series by MC Heaton for a bit of light relief. It's cosy and fun, but engaging.

confusedandemployed · 05/08/2019 21:02

M C Beaton

hanahsaunt · 05/08/2019 21:13

Dorothy L Sayers! Can't believe that I missed her off.
I do have a sneaking fondness for Agatha Raisin...
Steer very clear of Stuart McBride; vile books.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 05/08/2019 21:17

I'm reading a Belinda Bauer one now and really enjoying it. Dark Side.

absofuckinglutley · 05/08/2019 21:26

Mo Hayer Detective Jack Caffery books. Murder with a bit lot of weirdness. Fab books that you need to read in order.

Rizzoli123 · 05/08/2019 21:50

I like Mark Burnell series of books. Being made into a film later in the year with jude Law and Blake Livery

GrumpyGran8 · 06/08/2019 08:49

To this list, I'll add Malcolm Mackay's Glasgow Trilogy - a crime series told from the criminals' POV.

Cerasus · 06/08/2019 15:53

Laura Wilson
Isabelle Grey
I am a fan of Susan Hill too as I don't like too much grisly detail. I second many suggestions especially Ellie Griffiths, Kate Atkinson, Ann Cleeve, Robert Galbraith and Peter May. Dorothy Sayers is also a favourite.
My wildcard would be Ben Aaronovitch, his Rivers of London series. You need to start at the first one and his books defy classification but I love them.

efeslight · 08/08/2019 20:53

Yes, as pps have said
Pd james
Barbara Vine / Ruth Rendell
Elly Griffiths
Ann cleeves
Belinda Bauer
Mark billingham
Erin Kelly
Peter Robinson
Val mcdermid
Has anyone here read Dorothy Simpson? Det Thanet is her main character, written in the 80s, so a little dated bit i enjoyed them
