I read a lot of fantasy books when I was younger and recently really got back into this genre after reading 'The name of the wind' and 'The wise man's fear' - both of which I absolutely loved!

What's the best book of this type you've read? Who's your favourite fantasy character?

I really enjoy the scale of these types of stories, especially when you often see them through from the start of a characters life to the end of their battle/journey. I love when you become so attached to a set a characters you never want to series to end.

I'm listening to the first of the mistborn series on audible and really loving it so far, thanks for the recommendation.

I also now have a very big to be read pile!

Trudi Canavan’s Milleniums Rule books and black magicians series are quite good. I remember another one every time I come on here

Was about to suggest anything by Trudi Canavan but @Wolfcubisthefemalenominal beat me to it! Good taste Smile

Fab thread, loving the recommendations! Malazan book of the fallen is my favourite, also the Mark Lawrence Prince of Thorns trilogy.

I'd recommend a less well-known series, Memory of Flames by Stephen Deas. Political mischief, shocking behaved back-stabbing characters, civil war, and dragons. The dragons are really well done.

Another series which has stayed in my memory more than many and that's The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. It's classified as science fiction but is set in the far future and has more of a fantasy feel than a science fiction one.

If you loved Patrick Rothfuss, the closest things to his books in mood and flavour I've found are The Red Knight (and sequels) by Miles Cameron, and Barbara Hambly's fantasy books (you'll have to get them used, but they are really amazing).

Nice to see another Malazan fan Lostara - one of my favourite characters BTW. Just to start reading them all again....Smile

Has anyone here read any Stephen Donaldson?
I’m just reading the illearth war.
There’s 10 books in the series! Wow !

I love the Aurian series by Maggie Furey but I think it’s out of print now although I do see it in second hand book shops sometimes

Ooh and Scott Lynch’s Gentlemen Bastards series is amazing

I loved Sharon Chakraborty's first two books, City of Brass and Kingdom of Copper. Looking forward to the next book coming out.
Also Deborah Harkness Discovery of Witches trilogy.
And Sabaa Tahir's Ember Quartet is very good so far (first 3 books are out).
Oh and Elspeth Cooper's Wild Hunt series is great too - hope she finishes the final book soon!
