I read a lot of fantasy books when I was younger and recently really got back into this genre after reading 'The name of the wind' and 'The wise man's fear' - both of which I absolutely loved!

What's the best book of this type you've read? Who's your favourite fantasy character?

I really enjoy the scale of these types of stories, especially when you often see them through from the start of a characters life to the end of their battle/journey. I love when you become so attached to a set a characters you never want to series to end.

I really enjoyed the Demon Cycle series, definitely recommend if you haven't read already.

Minkies11 · 19/05/2019 19:19

Malazan books of the fallen. Best thing I've ever read and truly epic. Makes GoT look like See Spot Run.

rabbitwoman · 19/05/2019 19:24

Robin hobb is amazing. Start with assassin's apprentice. Took my breath away by then end - about twelve books in total, so you can really get into the story and characters.

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 19/05/2019 19:26

Lies of Locke Lamora and the following two books if you like Rothfuss

Also Brandon Sanderson’s way of kings and subsequent books and his mistborn series

The farseer and liveships books by Robin hobb are also good but not Rothfuss standard

BringMeThatHorizon · 19/05/2019 19:29

Mark Lawrence's Red Sister series. So good!

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 19/05/2019 19:37

Joe Abercrombie’s half a king series as well

DifficultLemonDifficult · 19/05/2019 19:42

It's YA, but the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas had me hooked. Actually, her Court of Thorns & Roses series is rather good too....

PetraDelphiki · 19/05/2019 19:58

Janny wurts mistwraith series - by the time you have read the published ones she will have finished the series

EyeEyeCaptainCaptain · 19/05/2019 20:15

Ohh thanks! I've read the farseer triology and I loved it but haven't read any of her others yet. Do you need to read all the Robin Hobb ones in order? Or could I skip over the live ship trader ones and go straight to the next trilogy with Fitz and the Fool?

Haven't heard of some of the others so will look them up. Thank you.

My favourite character from a fantasy series is probably Polgara the sorceress or the Fool.

You can skip liveship traders you will miss a bit of the fools story if you do but there’s enough in the later farseer books to get the gist

Damia · 19/05/2019 20:22

My favourite was always the wheel of time series by Robert Jordan

Margotshypotheticaldog · 19/05/2019 20:26

Placemarking for the recommendations Smile

MeganChips · 19/05/2019 20:33

Guy Gavriel Kay, the Fionavar Tapestry - The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire and the Darkest Road. My favourite ever fantasy series. Tigana by the same author is great too.

Trudi Cannavan books are quite good.

Did Patrick Rothfuss ever write the 3rd book?

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 19/05/2019 20:35

Megan he’s still writing it. There is a novella about Auri - the slow regard of silent things

MeganChips · 19/05/2019 20:47

Thanks Wolf, I’ll check that out.

sakura06 · 19/05/2019 20:51

I absolutely adore The Kingkiller Chronicles. I'm genuinely concerned Rothfuss will never finish it. Sadly I didn't much enjoy The Slow Regard of Silent Things.

Very different fantasy series but I loved 'The Broken Earth' trilogy by N.K.Jemisin and 'The Winternight' trilogy by Katherine Arden. A little more like the Rothfuss are the Tearling novels by Erika Johansen.

I really love Justin Cronin's The Passage trilogy too (but that's more dystopian future). Bernard Cornwall's Arthur books (The Warlord Chronicles) are a nice historical fiction/fantasy crossover.

I assume you've read Game of Thrones? Otherwise I'd recommend that too (Book 4 A Feast for Crows is terrible though).

Echobelly · 19/05/2019 20:56

The Tamir Triad by Lynn Flewelling is really fantastic and seems sadly little known. Really imaginative, dark storytelling with great characters, particularly portraying characters of various sexualities really well.

Moominfan · 19/05/2019 21:00

Another one for demon series peter v Brett. Wasn't into fantasy but this one lured me in, not I'm a convert. However there are 5 books that easily should have been 3. Bit of a money maker

suchasoftersin · 19/05/2019 21:08

Anything by Brandon Sanderson! But definitely his Mistborn series. Brilliant books. I also really enjoyed the Melinda Salisbury series that starts with 'The Sin eater's daughter'.
Chris Wooding is another favourite
His series 'The Braided Path' is brilliant.

hidingmystatus · 20/05/2019 13:38

Tad Williams: the Dragonbone Chair series (3 books).

HerondaleDucks · 20/05/2019 13:42

Naomi Novik is very good. I adored her Uprooted novel and the other series is very good too.

EyeEyeCaptainCaptain · 20/05/2019 16:56

I have read GOT, but I gave up half way threw feast of crows and decided I'd just watch the tv show instead.

I have just bought mistborn book 1 on audible, can't wait to start listening to it on my walk to work tomorrow. Thanks everyone .

I really enjoyed Weaveworld by Clive Barker - it's not part of a series that I know of, but was so long and on such an epic scale that it hit the spot.

'The spot' was the result of finishing the Thomas Covenant stories by Stephen Donaldson.

PrincessSarene · 26/05/2019 20:03

Pretty much everything on here is from my recently read list, so good taste everyone! Another author I really recommend is Glenda Larke. She creates fascinating characters in really detailed worlds. I also like Karen Miller and Brent Weeks. Now I’m off to check some of the recommendations I’ve not yet read. Thanks for the thread ;-)

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 27/05/2019 01:42

The Riftwar saga by Raymond E. Feist - "Magician" is first. They are epic.
Also the Deverry sequence by Katharine Kerr. I waited 25 years for her to write to the end, and I adore them. The first one is Daggerspell.
