I love books and reading but am at a bit of a loss as to the sort of books to start reading with ds. Up to now he has enjoyed books like the Daisy series, Gruffalo, Charlie and Lola etc but I feel he's probably ready to move on to something different for us to read to him to begin with. Would welcome any suggestions. We have a library round the corner so can try pretty much anything but a little direction and recommendation would be great.

Horrid Henry, Captain Underpants, my six year old also likes reading joke books, not sure if he actually "gets" them.

Flat Stanley are also really good.

Lots of things:
Horrid Henry (the Miranda Richardson CDs are brilliant for the car and we all enjoy them)
Captain Underpants uses a lot of words he doesn't understand (and sometimes I'm not inclined to explain)
Roald Dahl stories.
DS also loves comics and I'm embracing this as a good way of him enjoying reading by himself (he mostly looks at the pictures tbh).
I bought various randon short story books from The Book People to help develop his reading. He enjoys them but not as much as the above.

We invested in a joke book as ds was happily making up his own which sadly made no sense and were not even remotely amusing. dh being more generous described them as surrealist!

Is Horrid Henry the same series as "Pooh is that you Bertie?" we have that one and ds likes it. Will look out for Flat Stanley.

My ds's bed time story at the moment is addington. When he sits still long enough to read for himself, he likes Zac Power, Flat Stanley and non fiction, mostly football or shark related (he really is a stereotype!) I know they all love Horrid Henry, but I think they are absolutely awful and won't have them in the house. He probably sneaks out to illicit Horrid Henry dens and reads them in secret!

Paddington, even!

Silly stories and Horrible Histories

northender · 12/07/2007 23:00

dh is currently humming the Paddington theme tune! ds has a bit of a South America fascination at the moment so would probably like the darkest Peru references!

Well its about a family who move to their aunts old run down house. There are two boys and one girl and just the mum trying to cope on her own. The house seems to have hidden, what I can only describe as sprites, who are mischevious and cause havoc between the disbelieving siblings with their antics whilst nobody is looking.

zubb · 12/07/2007 23:02

whats he into? Ds1 is 5.6 and really into books about King Arthur / pirates / knights etc. The classic tales - Sinbad / Robin Hood etc are also good.

northender · 12/07/2007 23:05

Thanks tl think I'll give Spiderwick Chronicles a try

At last made the link! Ds is 5 but enjoys these being read to him.

northender · 12/07/2007 23:08

Good suggestions zubb, he is into castles and knights etc and was enthused by the Robin Hood story when we went to Sherwood forest last year.

Captain Underpants and Horrid Henry

Also Russell Troy Monster Boy went down a treat

Currently we are wading through Stig of the Dump.

Also a football magazine works well.

My DS likes to laugh. Was v worried about his total lack of interest in books so worked hard to try and tickle his fancy.

zubb · 12/07/2007 23:14

If he likes Robin Hood see if this is coming near to you at all -
robin hood outdoor play it is brilliant - very funny.

northender · 12/07/2007 23:16

cod I agree hence the OP really. I'm not sure where to pitch it? I guess that's where the library comes in handy to try things out. Quattro, ds is football mad and has a collection of football programmes from matches he's been to! I haven't any problem keeping him interested in non fiction stuff but would like to keep him interested in fiction as well. Am off to bed now though will pick this up again tomorrow.

dahl are good - although we haven't gone through them all. Ds2 (3) has to listen to them as well, as I read to them at the same time, but conversely Ds1 still has to listen to all his books as well. Ds3 just takes books of the shelves, opens them and goes to get another - really not interested in King Arthur yet!
