I've exhausted my supply of books. I've read...

All of the Magic Bites books by Ilona Andrews, as well as the Edge series, the Innkeeper series and pretty much anything they have written.

Jodi Taylor's St Mary's series and the Dark Light books.

Templar books by Debra Dunbar. As well as her Imp series.

All 13 First Grave on the left (or right, I forget!) books by Darynda Jones.

The Marnie Baranuik Cold Company books.

Charlaine Harris's Harper series (Grave Secret). Not into her vampire books.

Weather warden series.

Poison Study/Fire Study etc series.

Rivers of London books. Waiting for the last one to come down to a decent price before buying that as they are expensive!

And I recommend them all. But I'm left with nothing to read.

I prefer fantasy over sci fi. Prefer female lead characters. And first person writing (past tense!).

Recommendations most welcome thanks.

Twenty-sided Sorceress books by Annie Bellet are fun.

Not a female protagonist, but enjoyable, RL King’s Alistair Stone novels.

An older series but well worth reading (and available on Kindle now) is PC Hodgell’s Kencyrath series.

If you’ve not read Lois McMaster-Bujold’s fantasy series which starts with The Curse of Chalion, you should run, not walk, to them.

Celine Kienan’s Moorehawke Trilogy.

Vivien Shaw’s Strange Practice series and Genivieve Cogman’s Invisible Library books are lots of fun.

Thank you for these. Kindle samples downloaded.

If you are happy to try new authors then

storybundle.com/fantasy

15 books $20 - limited time offer on each book set.

Most authors are new but this set of 15 has two by Kathryn Kristine Rusch and one by Alan Dean Foster.

For very light reading fun fantasy/steampunk, I like Gail Carriger - start with the Parasol Protectorate series

Standalone rather than a series, but I'd really recommend Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Her Temeraire series (Napoleonic wars with dragons) is also fun.

I enjoyed the Split Worlds series by Emma Newman - first one Between Two Thorns - is only a couple of quid on Kindle (she also writes sci-fi, but I much prefer her fantasy).

ommmward · 03/04/2019 23:20

You are going to love Diana Wynne Jones.

Deep secret (and then The Merlin Conspiracy)

Heywood

A sudden wild magic

Will get you started. (After that, I love howls moving castle, and The house of many ways, and I know I've missed out lots of good ones but don't want to overwhelm!)

ommmward · 03/04/2019 23:20

Oh, and the Mortal Engines quartet dots between male and female protagonists. Dystopian steam punk.

ommmward · 03/04/2019 23:21

I meant Hexwood. Damn you autocorrect.

AdaColeman · 03/04/2019 23:29

The Book of Dust (Vol one) by Philip Pullman is Kindle Deal of the Day for another half an hour!

Chamomile · 04/04/2019 16:21

The Call by Peader O'Guilin. It's YA which I don't usually read, but picked up dd's copy and really enjoyed it.

weebarra · 04/04/2019 16:32

Patrica Briggs' Mercy Thompson series.
Sarah J Maas
Jim Butcher's Dresden Files

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 04/04/2019 16:35

Ursula le guin- the earthsea quartet or left hand of darkness. She is such an excellent writer. I love fantasy but so much of the writing and characterisation can be a bit formulaic.

PerspicaciaTick · 04/04/2019 16:36

Have you read any Discworld? Lots of very strong women. You could try the Tiffany Aching series, or the ones with the witches in. Or Susan (try the Hogfather).

weebarra · 04/04/2019 17:36

Love the name, Miss Tick!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/04/2019 17:46

Yes, all of the Discworld. And Good Omens.

W|hat about American Gods, I didn't think I would like it but fell head over heels recently. Or the Graveyard Book is a great short read.
Or go old-school with Anne McCaffery''s Dragons of Pern epic.

Minkies11 · 04/04/2019 18:15

Epic fantasy series Malazan Books of the Fallen. I literally have not read anything better than this. It's brilliant. Read them all at least once a year as I can't seem to do without them Blush
Also Miles Cameron fantasy series the red knight is compulsive. Running out of words to describe how good these both are :)

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/04/2019 18:26

I have loved the Dragons of Pern series and have all of them, but am saving re reading them for the summer hols as I have read them a little too recently to really enjoy them if I read them again before then.

Yes to lots of Gaiman books - Graveyard/American Gods and others.

Also, the Mistborn series.

The Sorcerer and the Crown by Zen Cho (sequel has just come out).

The Defiant Heir by Melissa Caruso - first in a trilogy, and book three is due out in a few weeks.

Under a Pendulum Sun by Jeanette Ng is good, but disturbing.

I’d second the Bujold and the Invisible Library recommendations!

cucumbergin · 07/04/2019 01:24

Definite second for Sorceror and the Crown and The True Queen - they're basically Regency romances with magic, Fairyland, dragons, and demons - tremendous good fun. Although the sequel does have some of the same characters as the first, they're pretty standalone so do not end on a cliffhanger!

hagsrus0 · 07/04/2019 04:52

The Marianne trilogy by Sheri Tepper
(Marianne, the Magus, and the Manticore etc)

SpamChaudFroid · 07/04/2019 05:45

Is Clive Barker fantasy? Or too horrific? I've enjoyed all his books, but thought Imajica the best.

sashh · 07/04/2019 06:47

Making notes of these.

Not a recommendation but links to some free books

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 07/04/2019 07:05

Not a female protagonist, but lots of strong female characters.
The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Aria999 · 07/04/2019 07:51

Graceling by Kristen cashore (and its two sequels)

Aria999 · 07/04/2019 07:54

And I'm going to start in the list in your first post, thanks! As it sounds like I like your taste...
