I've exhausted my supply of books. I've read...

All of the Magic Bites books by Ilona Andrews, as well as the Edge series, the Innkeeper series and pretty much anything they have written.

Jodi Taylor's St Mary's series and the Dark Light books.

Templar books by Debra Dunbar. As well as her Imp series.

All 13 First Grave on the left (or right, I forget!) books by Darynda Jones.

The Marnie Baranuik Cold Company books.

Charlaine Harris's Harper series (Grave Secret). Not into her vampire books.

Weather warden series.

Poison Study/Fire Study etc series.

Rivers of London books. Waiting for the last one to come down to a decent price before buying that as they are expensive!

And I recommend them all. But I'm left with nothing to read.

I prefer fantasy over sci fi. Prefer female lead characters. And first person writing (past tense!).

Recommendations most welcome thanks.

Have you read the women of the otherworld books by Kelley Armstrong? The series starts with Bitten.

They are urban fantasy rather than epic high fantasy but I really enjoyed them after coming across them accidentally. All female protagonists and the men in the stories are more peripheral characters.

Jfw82 · 07/04/2019 12:27

Melissa Olson- Scarlett Bernard books and Boundary books both series are good. Would prob read them in that order

Similar in style to the Kelley Armstrong other world books.

Also recommend Tamora Pierce and Trudie Canavan

Daughter of the empire by Raymond e feist and janny wurts.

I second the women of the underworld

7Days · 07/04/2019 19:28

Robin Hobb Elderling Series.
Just brilliant books.
The main character is male, but there are plenty of female characters too. She's just a great writer.

I confidently predict you'll love them

Lollypop701 · 07/04/2019 19:30

Second trudi caravan

strawberrypenguin · 07/04/2019 19:32

Laini Taylor - any of hers
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. It's huge but good

Hoppinggreen · 07/04/2019 19:34

Anything by Jodi Taylor

Jfw82 · 07/04/2019 19:40

@werekitty agree about daughters of empire but I think they read better having read magician (which I love)

TheFirstOHN · 07/04/2019 23:31

Modern Magick series by Charlotte E English.

The writing style is similar to Chronicles of St Mary's and Rivers of London.

I'm about a third of the way through The Priory of the Orange Tree. I like the descriptions of the different cities but the characterisation seems quite shallow compared to her previous novels. Is it worth persevering?

hidingmystatus · 08/04/2019 01:21

Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels books.
second Patricia Briggs (all of them)
Second Lois McMaster Bujold's Curse of Chalion, Sharing Knife, and Penric series.
Sheri Tepper - more serious, but really presciently excellent. Try The Gate To Women's Country and A Plague of Angels, but they are all wonderful.

Anynamewilldo2 · 08/04/2019 01:34

Mercedes Lackey - the 500 kingdom is fairy tales with a big twist and has brilliant strong female leads.

She also does the valdemar series. Start with the magic's pawn/magic's promise/magic's price trilogy, which has a male lead, but still excellent.

Robin Mckinley - the blue sword, and the sequel/prequel the hero and the crown. Also deerskin.

I second Sarah Maas , both her series - fantastic authoress.

Mark Lawrence - Red Sister is the first book. It's a trilogy, but can't remember name of the trilogy. Quite different.

My friend writes fantasy for adults and young adults.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Beth_Durst

strawberrypenguin · 08/04/2019 18:10

@TheFirstOHN I'm about 2/3 through and really enjoying it. Things have picked up a bit pace wise. I do wish it wasn't quite so long as it feels like I've been reading it for ages but I'm not struggling with it.
It's the first one of hers I've read so I can't compare it to her others.

TheFirstOHN · 08/04/2019 18:15

Thanks strawberrypenguin
I'm taking a quick break to read something shorter different and then will go back to it.

DerelictWreck · 08/04/2019 18:21

All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. Just been turned into a TV seiners on Sky Atlantic

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 09/04/2019 11:49

Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman.
Also maybe Jasper Fforde?

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 09/04/2019 11:52
