Love a good location read whilst I'm on holiday. Currently in the Italian mountains.

Bonus points for a historical novel.

I last read Sharon penmans "here be dragons" whilst in wales which blew me away.

Thank you!!

I really liked The Birth of Venus and Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant. I love Italy, enjoy!

onalongsabbatical · 31/03/2019 17:52

Honestly don't know if this fits the bill because it's a thriller set in the gay community in Rome in the 80s, but it was what came to mind when I saw your post. I loved it because it's both a great story and very well written. He's written other stuff set in Italy too. I'll post this and then maybe another of his I've read. www.amazon.co.uk/Any-Human-Face-Charles-Lambert-ebook/dp/B004CJ8X40/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid&sr

RoseReally · 31/03/2019 17:54

Oh and the Elena Ferrante Neapolitan novels!

onalongsabbatical · 31/03/2019 17:55

Ah, this one - but it's not as available as the other one ow it seems. www.amazon.co.uk/author-Charles-Lambert-published-December/dp/B01BOE0D8Y/ref=la_B0034OGLKC_1_16?s=books&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1554051190&sr=1-16

The Leopard, set in Sicily.

onalongsabbatical · 31/03/2019 17:57

Yes and Elena Ferrante! Also Natalia Ginzberg.

onalongsabbatical · 31/03/2019 18:00

Going back a bit - look at Alberto Moravia.

Gone2far · 31/03/2019 19:02

The Leopard by Lampedusa. A must-read imo. Also I'm not Scared.

musicmum75 · 31/03/2019 19:09

Definitely Sarah Dunant's novels.

elspethmcgillicuddy · 31/03/2019 19:15

The food of love by Anthony Capella is exactly what you are looking for I think

Portulaca · 31/03/2019 21:27

The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 01/04/2019 02:31

Susanna Kearsley’s Season of Storms.

Dorothy Dunnett’s House of Niccolo series (you might have to move to Italy, they’re long).

David Hewson’s Costa and Peroni crime novels (highly recommended).

The Name of the Rose which is lots of intellectual fun if you like puzzles - Umberto Eco.

The Talented Mr Ripley - Patricia Highsmith.

Michael Dibdin’s Aurelio Zen crime novels, also Donna Leon’s mystery series.

flowerycurtain · 01/04/2019 06:10

Oh blimey, where to start. So, to fit your brief, try this novel that has recently been published:

An Italian Affair www.tripfiction.com/an-italian-affair-novel-set-in-ww2-tuscany/

The Madonna of the Mountains was on the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards (Fiction with a Sense of Place) Longlist www.tripfiction.com/novel-set-in-the-veneto-the-maddona-of-the-mountains/

The Girl from Venice www.tripfiction.com/mystery-set-in-northern-italy/

Oh, and a novel set in Dolomites - village life and ice cream, what's not to like? The Ice Cream Makers www.tripfiction.com/novel-set-in-the-dolomites/

Have fun choosing!

The Name of the Rose seconded. Also The Enchanted April, which is very English but Italy set.

littlebillie · 01/04/2019 21:19

Big stone Gap, set in USA and Italy.

ChristmasFluff · 02/04/2019 17:15

I loved 'Miss Garnet's Angel' by Salley Vickers - set in Venice.

needsleepzzz · 02/04/2019 17:16

I love Capri by Belinda Jones, anything by Nicky Pellegrino

cingolimama · 02/04/2019 17:18

Ditto to "Miss Garnet's Angel"! Also "Early One Morning" by Virginia Baily
Enjoy!

Candleabra · 03/04/2019 12:48

Marco Vichi's inspector Bordelli novels, especially the first couple

StressToy · 03/04/2019 12:51

Deirdre Madden's Remembering Light and Stone, about an Irishwoman living in an Umbrian village. Seconding or thirding di Lampedusa's The Leopard. I'm not keen on Elena Ferrante's novels, but other people adore them.

KeithLeMonde · 03/04/2019 19:33

A Room With A View

Clawdy · 03/04/2019 20:34

For a lighter read - Evening Class by Maeve Binchy or one of the Nicky Pellegrino novels.

verona · 04/04/2019 11:26

EM Forster's A Room With a View
