I'm about to download a kindle book for my flight and holiday but I'm on looking for recommendations for a book I'll love and will keep me gripped from the start.
Books I've loved recently include

The Heart's Invisible Furies
Americanah
Almost all of Maggie O'Farrell and Kate Atkinson's books
Becoming by Michelle Obama
the Miniaturist and The Muse by Jessie Burton
Jenny Eclair books for a laugh
Think I've read most of Kate Morton's books too.
The Goldfinch and A Secret History by Donna Tartt but don't think these would be great holiday books.
The God of Small Things.

Any recommendations? I'm currently reading Olive Kitteridge which I'm enjoying but I think the in flight movies might compete for my attention over this book Smile
Thanks.

I am Pilgrim. It's an intelligent thriller. Fucking brilliant. Plus it's partly set in New York.

Elinor Oliphant (can't remember full title) is funny.

Wellhellothere101 · 31/03/2019 09:23

Thanks. I started I Am Pilgrim a while ago and didn't get on with it. Can't remember why but think I'll give it another go.
Yes loved Eleanor Oliphant too!

Do you like historical novels? You might like Manhattan Beach. I can't remember the author's name sorry. I really enjoyed it.

Thirtyrock39 · 31/03/2019 09:28

Old baggage is brilliant by Lissa Evans and I've since read two more of hers
I loved the new Mrs Clifton by Elizabeth Buchan which is set in post war London
Jane smiley writes big American epics like a thousand acres and a trilogy beginning with some luck that are really gripping reads

MightyAtlantic · 31/03/2019 09:31

Another book I read and enjoyed recently (also set in New York!) was Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue.

Wellhellothere101 · 31/03/2019 09:32

Thank you Mighty and Thirty. I haven't heard of any of these so I'll check them out.

Any Tana French. Currently reading her new one The Wych Elm which is a stand-alone. The others are a series of thrillers.

I just finished a spool of blue thread by Anne Tyler. If you like Elizabeth Strout I think it will float your boat too. Plus, it’s pretty long. I couldn’t put it down

beeyourself · 31/03/2019 09:34

The latest Kate Atkinson book? It's on my "to read" list

Eatmycheese · 31/03/2019 09:37

blonde by Joyce carol Oates
American wife by Curtis sittenfeld

I’m currently reading Eleanor Oliphant and I am throughly
enjoying it. Way more than I expected to

AgentProvocateur · 31/03/2019 09:37

I was going to suggest The Heart’s Invisible Furies 😂 Your likes are similar to mine, so what about Home Fire (you’ll read in all on the journey) The Corrections or Poisonwood Bible (both longer).

Wellhellothere101 · 31/03/2019 09:37

Bee is the newest Kate Atkinson book Transcription? If so yes I've read it and really liked it.
A Spool of Blue Thread is on my wish list on Audible so I've been thinking about starting that one for a while.
Thanks again everyone.

Things I never told you (or some similar name) by Celeste Ng
The latest Anita Shreve ... actually, all Anita Shreve

BeCoolYolande · 31/03/2019 09:38

The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo

I'm a tough crowd and I devoured it, beautiful.

A Brief History Of Seven Killings

People either love this or hate it, I was in the love it camp, I couldn't put it down.
It has some action in NYC too.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 31/03/2019 09:40

I think you like the same sorts of books that I do.

The book i loved recently was "The Gift of the Seal Woman" by Sally Magnusson. Really absorbing and loads to think about.

Another gripping one I enjoyed was Exposure by Helen Dunmore.

mrbob · 31/03/2019 09:41

Have you read Marian Keyes? Rachael’s holiday is sort of New York set to start with. As is “anybody out there?” But they are all fab and easy reads but a bit deeper than chicklit

EmmaGrundyForPM · 31/03/2019 09:41

And I second Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng.

Thirtyrock39 · 31/03/2019 09:42

I agree with blonde and American wife as well- both really excellent and really American ! Blonde is the book I read while travelling around America in my early twenties

OldGrinch · 31/03/2019 09:45

Have you read the Outlander books? If not start with book one and you will never look back Grin

Weatherwax · 31/03/2019 09:45

I second Eleanor Oliphant. And Little Fires Everywhere; and Woman at the Window. Couldn't put either down.

Wellhellothere101 · 31/03/2019 09:50

Oh bloody hell lots of recommendations now! Thanks so much. I'll keep this for reference.
I've read American Wife and really, really liked it.
These all sound amazing and I want to start them all now! I'm sure my DH and DS won't mind if I read for the whole holiday Smile

Oh and Paul Auster “The New York Trilogy” is a magnificent read.
If you like the Greenfinch i think you will love his work.

Sorry I’ve just made your reading list longer Grin

lots33 · 31/03/2019 10:21

Pursuit of Happiness, Douglas Kennedy. Set in New York and fabulous book.

Charley50 · 31/03/2019 11:19

I loved the Greenfinch but found the New York Trilogy the most boring, pointless book I've ever tried to read. The characters didn't have personalities. I persevered for longer than I wanted to, thinking I must be missing something, but had to give up. It's nothing like the Goldfinch is it?

Eatmycheese · 31/03/2019 12:39

@charley no it’s not “like” the Goldfinch or Greenfinch as my previous post would have you think🙈😂. Not in the sense of topic, structure or indeed style: it’s just for some reason when I read one I think of the other. I found both books mesmerising and intriguing.
