Going to New York on holiday today and need a gripping read for the flight.

I'm about to download a kindle book for my flight and holiday but I'm on looking for recommendations for a book I'll love and will keep me gripped from the start.
Books I've loved recently include

The Heart's Invisible Furies
Americanah
Almost all of Maggie O'Farrell and Kate Atkinson's books
Becoming by Michelle Obama
the Miniaturist and The Muse by Jessie Burton
Jenny Eclair books for a laugh
Think I've read most of Kate Morton's books too.
The Goldfinch and A Secret History by Donna Tartt but don't think these would be great holiday books.
The God of Small Things.

Any recommendations? I'm currently reading Olive Kitteridge which I'm enjoying but I think the in flight movies might compete for my attention over this book Smile
Thanks.

Of course Goldfinch not Greenfinch! Anyway each to their own!
Ann Tyler writes lovely novels.

OldGrinch · 31/03/2019 16:13

I second Persuit of Happiness, fabulous book

BikeRunSki · 31/03/2019 16:20

Douglas Kennedy novels are always gripping. The Pursuit of Happiness is set in New York. Ignore the soppy covers and titles. They are all set against a really interesting historical/political background and feature strong female leads.

X post !

Ooh I just thought of another brilliant book. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

Charley50 · 31/03/2019 16:50

It's set in the US. And Greece.

Squickety · 31/03/2019 16:55

You have some of my favourites in there...based on that I"d recommend A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry or A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (tissues required for this one).

Wellhellothere101 · 31/03/2019 16:59

Thanks everyone. Just waiting to board our flight at Heathrow. So far I've loved the sound of Everything I Never Told You and Behold The Dreamers so I've bought those.
After all the votes for Pursuit of Happiness I'm gong to add that to my kindle too. I've got a feeling I've read it before but I'm hoping not.
I'll definitely check out all the others when I get home.

A Little Life- I have this book but decided not to read as it seems to be a real Marmite book. Sounds really harrowing.

Another vote for Manhattan Beach. Set in Brooklyn/ Manhattan around WW2 and really compelling.

AgentProvocateur · 31/03/2019 17:27

@squickety, they’re two of my favourite books too, particularly AFB. I love a tragic book on holiday, but suspect I’m
I’m a minority 😂

BikeRunSki · 31/03/2019 17:44

If you find that yiu have read “The Pursuit of Happiness”, try “State of The Union” and “A Specisl Relationship”.

MIlesdavis · 31/03/2019 22:06

Henry Roth's "Call It Sleep" - NY immigrant experience elegantly written.

Karl Ove Knausgaard's "My Struggle"

Any Edith Wharton (Old New York)

Enjoy!

Charley50 · 31/03/2019 22:20

Are you there yet? Have fun! (And don't read A Little Life).

Wellhellothere101 · 01/04/2019 23:41

Thanks everyone. Yes we're here and it's amazing! I read about half of Behold The Dreamers on the flight and I'm totally loving it. Just what I was looking for and it's set in Manhattan. It's been full on today so I don't think I'll get much of a chance to read while I'm here but I'll probably finish it on the flight home.
I'll check out all the other recommendations when I'm home.

The Immortalists
Little Fires Everywhere
Together (by Julie Cohen)

All really great page-turners. The premise of 'Together' sounds meh, but it's got an excellent plot twist.

The hearts invisible furies

Wellhellothere101 · 02/04/2019 19:15

Thanks Strugglingmum73 but I've read the Heart's Invisible Furies. Well I've listened to it on Audible which I think would be even better than reading the book as the narrator's Irish accents were brilliant. Think it's the best audio book I've ever listened to. I was so sad when I finished it.

It’s one of my favourite books. I loved it too. Have you read the other two I suggested?

Strugglingmum73 · 02/04/2019 19:25

I loved An American Marriage too and The Great Alone.

hackmum · 02/04/2019 21:05

I agree about Jennifer Egan’s Manhattan Beach. A visit from the goon squad is also excellent.

And am also a fan of Lissa Evans. One of my absolute faves.

Thatmustbemyname · 02/04/2019 21:10

@Charley50 I think you're the only other person I've heard of that's read I am Pilgrim!!

I absolutely loved that book but whenever I've mentioned it to anyone, they've never heard of it. I found the whole book totally gripping and I've been waiting for his next book to come out, keeps being delayed though.

Charley50 · 03/04/2019 08:40

@Thatmustbemyname - we're not alone.. it's come up I another thread about thrillers.. actually it might have been me that mentioned it! Grin
