When, where, how much and how often do you read?

Over the last few years I've got out of the habit of reading everywhere and now I just tend to go to bed earlier and do my reading for an hour at the end of the day. I listen to audio books in the car and sometimes when I'm cooking or other pottering around-type jobs. I miss having a book to hand all the time, so I'm going to try having 2 books on the go at one time so I can carry one around to read at lunchtime, or in the evenings, and keep a separate one for bedtime. I usually read 2 or 3 books a month and 1 or 2 audio books.

I'm curious to know what other people's reading habits are?

I have got much more into reading over the last couple of years.

I usually have three on the go, one on kindle, one Audible and one actual book - all different genres.

I put aside some time each day, if it's a busy day reading time is sometimes at the expense of TV in the evening.
I'm not great at reading in bed, that's when I MN!

theyellowjumper · 11/03/2019 12:57

I don't watch much tv, but I manage to fit 2-3 hours social media into most days, which is probably a complete waste of my time. I'm going to try cutting that back to an hour and doing reading instead.

Pretty much every evening, at the weekends and whenever I can Grin

I got through 150 books last year, which I was pretty chuffed with but I do class reading as one my my main 'hobbies' even though that might sound quite odd to some people.

Mainly my Kindle nowadays as it's so damn convenient but I still buy books and are given them as presents, which is always lovely.

I don't watch a lot of tv though, which probably has something to do with the quantity...

Ratatouille76 · 11/03/2019 18:42

I love reading and get annoyed with myself for not reading as much as I used too.

2dogsandPG · 11/03/2019 18:44

I have a bath most evenings and read for a while then. Also try to get a chapter in before bed!

FedupNagging · 11/03/2019 19:49

Elle, reading as a main hobby is most definitely not odd-it's one of mine too & has been since I could read as a child.

In my teens & 20's it got tiresome having to explain that no reading is not boring, yes I do enjoy drinking and partying, no, I'm not boring and yes I have lots of friends Grin.

Back to the actual question- I read every night in bed, in fact can't sleep without reading at least a couple of pages. If it's an absolute page turner, I'll read it at any opportunity though. Saturday & Sunday mornings are a good time too, in bed with a coffee. Also Saturday & Sunday afternoons while dh is watching the rugby.

My dc's are all adults now so I have more time to read but can be distracted by a good box set.

BlackPrism · 11/03/2019 23:18

Whenever - I'm the bus, in bed, when watching Tv, on my lunch break.
I read a kindle paper white but have lots of paperbacks too. When I wasn't studying and working full time I would read 3-4 books a week but now it's about 1 per week.

Have always been book mad though, it's my main hobby

GrumpyOldMare · 11/03/2019 23:23

When - whenever I have ''me time''
Where - on the train to/from work,lunch break,on the settee,in bed,on the bus,on the beach,anywhere I can sit.
How much - loads,I have 3 or 4 books on the go at any one time.

Always been known to have my nose in a book from an early age.

theyellowjumper · 12/03/2019 15:52

This is making me want to fit in a lot more reading. I just got home from work (early finish on Tuesdays) so am just doing a quick 10 mins on MN rather than staying on here until my dcs get home. I will read instead.

Oh I love reading. I’ve read since I was a child and read every day even if for just a few minutes (but it’s normally at least an hour

ElleMcFearsome · 12/03/2019 16:59

Ohh it's lovely to feel normal Grin

HebeMumsnet · 12/03/2019 17:05

On the train and in bed like most people. BUT ALSO, I recently gave this some thought and decided I wanted to make reading more of a thing I actually give time to. So I got my family to all club together for a recent (ahem) 'big' birthday and get me a reading armchair. I love it! No one else is allowed in it except me and it has actually made me make time to sit down and read instead of always doing it just to pass the time. Highly recommend a reading chair. Is also a good way to landgrab a corner of a living room for yourself.

CalamityJune · 12/03/2019 17:06

Only in bed at the moment and it's a poor show! It makes me really tired so i'm only really getting through a book every month.

I'm envious of people who can read while they commute!

ScreamingValenta · 12/03/2019 17:10

I always have a book on the go and read whenever I have spare time and nothing else I want to do - evenings, weekends, on the train, in my lunch break.

I am a quick reader - which I very much regard as a curse, not a blessing because I get through books far too quickly.

I buy most of my books from charity shops or cheaply on Kindle to keep the cost of my 'habit' down.

I'm not fussy at all and will read most genres of fiction, plus non-fiction and biographies.

I don't finish books I'm not enjoying - life is too short. If I'm not bothered about what happens next after a couple of chapters, it goes to the charity shop.

I re-read a lot too - I have a houseful of books. I don't keep every book I ever buy - I don't have room, so I make a judgement based on how much I enjoyed the book and send those I'm not too thrilled with back to the charity shop.

Babdoc · 12/03/2019 17:15

I have always had a serious book addiction. Six a week as a teenager. It consumes my spare cash and large chunks of my time. I resort to buying them second hand on Amazon and my adult DC have to drag me past bookshops in blinkers.
For my birthday once they threw me into a gorgeous quirky old second hand bookshop in Edinburgh and said they’d buy whatever I found in the next 20 minutes...!
One day my house will sink without trace under the weight of books.

ScreamingValenta · 12/03/2019 17:16

What a good idea, @HebeMumsnet!

VelvetPineapple · 12/03/2019 17:19

I read on my phone when my baby is asleep on me, on the rare occasion I’m not so exhausted that I fall asleep myself. I used to love reading and I’m gutted that I don’t ever get to do it any more.

oopslateagain · 12/03/2019 17:20

I love real books, I just can't quite get into one properly on a Kindle but it's very handy for holidays. I've got one entire wall of my spare room shelved as a massive bookcase and it's full, I'm a sucker for a good second-hand bookshop.

I read in bed every night, and in the afternoon if I'm not working I like to curl up on the sofa with my guilty secret - fan fiction on the computer.

BlueMerchant · 12/03/2019 17:20

Couple of chapters every night in bed. I can't sleep without it.

Fluffiest · 12/03/2019 17:23

How much I read depends on the book I'm on. If I'm loving it I'll read at every opportunity and finish it in about three days. But that's quite rare. I think I read at least once book every three weeks.

I read in the evening in bed, and in the bath and sometimes when DD is sitting on my knee watching Fireman Sam.

Pashazade · 12/03/2019 17:26

At the moment one on the kindle, one on my
phone. Three factual real books and about 3 other fiction. I dip in and out depending on my mood. Guess I average 2-3 a week sometimes more.

theyellowjumper · 14/03/2019 20:27

Hebe a special reading chair is my dream. I used to have a little reading corner years ago but it got filled with large toys and never came back when my dcs got older. Maybe it's time to do some reclaiming.

I actually miss public transport commuting because it was an extra couple of hours reading time. Now I'm in the car for work and I have audio books but less time for actual reading. I also work from home for part of the week and I think that's led to me reading just in bed - I feel like it blurs the boundaries between work and leisure time if I get my book out for a few pages while I have a break, which is silly as I do that when I'm on a break at my workplace, just not when I'm working from home.

CaptainNelson · 14/03/2019 22:12

Ooh Hebe a reading chair is my dream! In the corner of the kitchen, so I can snatch 10 minutes when doing other things...
I read in bed, like many others, but also on the train and on the loo. Usually non-fiction there - 5 mins of something factual. Audio books I listen to when I'm walking the dog. I've thought about listening on my bike but decided it was too dangerous. Weekend mornings at breakfast. When I have to wait for a child (sports etc). I try to have a book in my bag all the time - reading different books means there's usually one small enough to carry around, or use the kindle for that.

elfycat · 14/03/2019 22:21

I took an OU Literature degree and I lost the joy of reading. Taking a MA (creative writing) at the moment and there's not much time for all of my hobbies as it is, so picking up a book has been the last thing on my mind.

But the last essay - submitted earlier today - was a reading reflection of books that have influenced me, and I re-read David Eddings Pawn of Prophecy as one of the authors I discussed. They were my favourite books in the 80s and I'm going to be reading them again over the next week.

If I get back into reading it's going to make my leisure time rather cramped (knitting and recently writing patterns, writing obviously, making stuff out of recycled jewellery and selling on etsy, a couple of games - Pokémon Go etc)

I have a 1.5 hr commute daily, both by bus and car, so I spend about half that time listening to audio books or reading my kindle/a physical book. Plus most evenings I read for about half an hour too. I was lurking on the 50 book thread last year, managed 50 exactly.
