It must be years since I read a book that made me cry but today reading Neil Cross's Luther The Calling, I have cried out loud when the pensioner and his dog were terrorised.
What books have made you cry?

The love song of Miss Queenie Hennessay. By Rachel Joyce.

The Time Traveller’s Wife made me cry, even on second reading.

The latest Anita Shreveport

TheVandalsTookTheHandles · 05/03/2019 06:53

All that Remains ny Sue Black. When she talks about her mother and father dying and how she feels so guilty about it. Also the bits on Kosovo .

No idea why "Port" added itself to "Shreve" there

A lot of books Anita Shreve have made me cry and she was the first author that came to mind when I read the post. I can’t remember which ones had me blubbing out loud tho. I loved Fortune’s Rock . Might have to re read it.

Stand Against Injustice by Michelle Diskin Bates.
Still Emily by Emily Owen.

Lungelady · 05/03/2019 07:18

A Celeste Ng book

Duckshead · 05/03/2019 07:23

A Little Life (although may have been relief that I'd finally ploughed my way through it! 🤣)

SkirmishOfWit · 05/03/2019 18:57

I’ve recently blinked back tears at Milkman, The Fortnight in September and Old Baggage.

The last one that properly made me cry was This Thing of Darkness by Harry Thompson.

bastedyoungturkey · 05/03/2019 20:19

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah made me sob. I almost had to put it in the fridge like Joey in Friends.

The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer. Not an overly emotional book in itself but I cried my eyes out for the protagonist by the end.

Deadringer · 05/03/2019 20:31

I read Les Miserables recently and I cried buckets at the end, even though I knew what was going to happen.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 05/03/2019 20:34

I've just read The Little Stranger, not a sad book in the least and I am usually as hard as nails, but one part deals with an old labrador being destroyed and I crumpled.
The two labradors keeping my feet warm got a bit more love.

A Monster Calls-Patrick Ness

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/03/2019 20:40

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, I felt bereft at the end.

Strangely, it was Middle England by Jonathan Coe. I hardly ever cry at books, but there's a bit at the end where Lois Trotter says that for the past 40 years, every night when she has gone to her bed her last thought has always been of the Birmingham pub bombings, in which her boyfriend died. Imagine having to live with that for the rest of your life.

FawnDrench · 06/03/2019 14:17

All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr.
Sobbed for quite a bit of the second half of the book.

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 06/03/2019 15:04

A Close and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers. Her books are so warm and thoughtful.

Portulaca · 06/03/2019 15:58

I think the last one was The Light Between Oceans. But books rarely make me cry .

PrincessScarlett · 06/03/2019 16:00

Me Before You reduced me to a sobbing wreck.

Theweasleytwins · 06/03/2019 16:01

Abhorsen- at the end😭😭😭

Disney2 · 08/03/2019 20:46

Eleanor Oliphant when she had the.. episode.. in the middle (don't want to spoil it for anyone!)

shinyblackdog · 08/03/2019 22:01

SkirmishOfWit, This Thing of Darkness nearly ended me! I read it over ten years ago and I'm working my way up to a reread. Any Human Heart had me in pieces on a plane. Life After Life and A God in Ruins and Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

It was a Hello Sunshine (Reese Witherspoon, who runs this great book club) choice a couple of months back, a beautifully told story set in atmospheric N Carolina
