Something along the lines of a Song of Ice and Fire, or the Dark Tower series, or Bird Box. Something with strong female characters that aren't just wishy washy wank fodder! Something well written!

I need new books.

I've just started reading Vox...can't put it down! Don't know if that's the type of thing you're looking for?

This one? www.goodreads.com/book/show/37796866-vox

Looks good. Sounds very Handmaids Tale.

Might be a bit out there for you, but I really rate Sarah J.Maas as a writer. It is quote fantasy led (high fae etc) but it is well written.

Alternatively, David and Leigh Weddings have strong female characters in their books, but they are very fantasy based.

Alternatively, Oryx and Crake by Atwood is an excellent read. More make dominated, bit very, very well written.

Or Only Ever Yours, by Louise O'Neill is a brilliant read. Her language play really helps set the scene.

The Wool trilogy by Hugh Howey.

Read it last summer and it's still in my head!

Mads123 · 03/01/2019 10:21

The book of the unnamed midwife series by Meg Elison .
It is a bit dark though.

Madmozzie · 03/01/2019 10:25

Justin Cronin's the Passage trilogy? I'm on the last one now, was surprised how much I enjoyed the first once I started it.

HulksPurplePanties · 03/01/2019 10:26

Oryx and Crake

Read that years ago. I remember loving it.

The Power is sort of peri-apocalypse, but it is full of well-written women.

HulksPurplePanties · 03/01/2019 10:33

The Wool trilogy looks good and it's on Kindle Unlimited. So yeah. :)

Have you read Future Home of the Living God? A dystopian novel where fertility has dropped massively so it has a strong female cast and is a thought provoking read.

I'm currently reading Vox but have to keep reverting to other lightweight books in between as I'm finding that quite bleak and scary!

HulksPurplePanties · 03/01/2019 10:35

I tried the Passage but couldn't get into it. Book of the unnamed midwife sounds good.

All great suggestions. I've downloaded the Wool trilogy and I'm keeping a list of the others.

Suzy McKee Charnas, 'Walk to the End of the World' and the sequel 'Motherlines' are a real feminist dystopia. Published in the 70s but still fresh seeming and relevant.

I tried Vox as I'd read the hype on Amazon and was looking forward to it but actually it was disappointing. It had one good idea but the world she invented didn't seem fleshed out much or very plausible really.

Station eleven

NoSpend19 · 03/01/2019 10:52

The Power

missbrightside09 · 03/01/2019 10:54

Yes that's the one, halfway through now and really enjoying it.

Timeforabiscuit · 03/01/2019 11:00

The girl with all the gifts

Forest of eyes and teeth (first of a trilogy)

Perhaps re-visit older ones like children of the dust, z for zacharia, on the beach (no female protagonist, but have never forgotten about the crib for some reason)

Mads123 · 03/01/2019 12:12

For the fantasy side I really enjoyed the nevernight series and The red sister, both have very strong female leads.

Crayolaaa · 03/01/2019 20:31

The End We Start From by Megan Hunter - parenting, love and survival in the UK after a disaster - it's a haunting read and beautifully written.

  • Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels and Edge series.
  • Sheri Tepper’s Gate to Women’s Country.
  • Brandon Sanderson’s Reckoners series.

Currently reading Vox. The premis is that in the future women are only allowed to say 100 words a day.

I'm about a quarter of the way in and enjoying it.

CrepuscularCritter · 04/01/2019 20:58

Into The Forest by Jean Hegland has two resourceful female leads.

CrepuscularCritter · 04/01/2019 21:00

And for fantasy I should add the Crystal Singer series by Anne McCaffrey.
