southeastdweller · 01/01/2019 09:28

Welcome to the first thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2019, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

Who's in for this year?

Thanks Southeast

I'm in properly this year. I've made my initial list of about 20 books to start with.

Carrying over Mythos by Stephen Fry I was only 10% in.

abitoflight · 01/01/2019 10:32

I'm in this year please
I doubt I will read 50 as planning on reading Zola Rougon Macquart series of 20 books and they're all quite long
I've read the first (last year) which introduces the family and have second downloaded on kindle all ready to start today Smile

Nuffaluff · 01/01/2019 10:33

I would like to join please. I should do fifty, read 68 last year, but my first choice is The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. 800 pages so I might not be on here for a while!

Namechange170518 · 01/01/2019 10:35

I need to join this, been slacking with my reading lately. My mum gave me roar - by cecelia ahern for Christmas which is a book of short stories, really enjoying it so far although I wouldn't have chosen it myself.

falgelednl · 01/01/2019 10:40

Can I join please?
I have always liked the idea of recording my reading but never actually manage it.
Today I have started Postcards from a Stranger by Imogen Clark.
I am also reading Dear Leader by Jang Jin-sung which has led to me reading other non-fiction books about North Korea as well as watching a programme by Michael Palin.

Sarahandduck18 · 01/01/2019 10:41

I’ll join.

I think I read a lot although I’ve never kept count before.

I do favour non fiction over fiction generally but I’m looking to change!

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2019 10:43

Nuffaluff I really enjoyed Luminaries and it wasn’t a slog for a big book so hope you find it the same.

Welcome newcomers Smile I think this is my 5th year Shock though I sometimes fall off I always come back Grin

TitsalinaBumSquash · 01/01/2019 10:47

I'm in! I read 70 last year I love a good book! 😊

Terpsichore · 01/01/2019 10:56

Thanks for the new thread, Southeast. I'm in again.

Last year's thread was a huge pleasure and meant that I finally did what I'm always promising myself I will do - keep a proper record of what I've read. I managed 83 books and am aiming for a round 100 this year, as I felt there was a big slack period when I lost focus.

Not sure what my first 2019 read will be as we're heading home after the holidays today and most of the books I've acquired while away are currently wedged into the car, which is full to bursting Grin

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 01/01/2019 11:09

I'd love to join. My reading lists used to be classics, non-fiction political stuff, US 60s but now I lurch from one light re-read to another. If I see what others are reading it may ignite my interest again. Currently finishing Bonfire of the Vanities then have Kate Morton's Distant Hours lined up.

ritzbiscuits · 01/01/2019 11:12

Hi!

I'm joining you all after lurking at the end of 2018.
I 'read' 17 last year, but 13 were on Audible! (Sorry if that's blasphemy on here!)

So ambition this year is to read more physical books. I've started with Hearts Invisible Furies after picking up the recommendation on here...only 30 pages in but really enjoying it so far.

Cherrypi · 01/01/2019 11:14

This year I’m going to make it to fifty. Both kids are sleeping through. I have time. I want to increase my attention span.

MrsArabin · 01/01/2019 11:15

I'm in. I read 55 books last year which was good but not brilliant. I wasted time on MN, Twitter, watching Youtube videos, etc. when I could have been reading so I'm hoping to read lots more in 2019 by not spending so much time doing all that.
I'm experimenting with making monthly TBRs this year. I tend to rebel against being told what to read - even if I'm the one doing the telling Confused - so I'm not sure if that's going to work but I thought it might help if I set myself a few short term goals.
My first read is going to be an easy one: The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L Sayers. The novel opens on NYE so felt appropriate. I'm fifty pages in.

ritzbiscuits · 01/01/2019 11:15

Oh meant to add my book of last year was Unexpected Joy of Being Sober (Catherine Gray). Non fiction and I'd urge anyone questioning your alcohol consumption to read this book. I found it really entertaining and shocking in equal measure.

DwangelaForever · 01/01/2019 11:16

I'm in!! Attempted it last year but didn't make it as I was pregnant most of the year and can't read when pregnant, I read 28 books last year compared to 60 in 2017! I've set my goodreads challenge to 52 this year!

virginqueen · 01/01/2019 11:18

I'm joining again, having managed 54 last year, which is at least twice as many as in any other year. The drawback is getting carried away by reading what others have read on MN, instead of reading my own books. I'm also supposed to be looking g for a job, but currently suffering from flu, so might postpone that for the moment. My first is Birdcage Walk by Helen Dunmore. She was an excellent writer who sadly died last year. Looking forward to lots of good suggestions from people on this thread.

BestIsWest · 01/01/2019 11:27

Thanks SouthEast for the new thread.

Happy 2019 Everyone.

I’m in again.

Reading Testament of Youth - Vera Brittain

SeaViewBliss · 01/01/2019 11:28

I’m in for the first time. I am doubtful I’ll manage 50 but will have a good crack at it. I want to be off my phone more so reading is the answer.

I’ve got too many unread books, physical and on my kindle. I started this morning with Of Mice and Men and I’ve also got 3 short story collections on the go. I’m loving Roar.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/01/2019 11:31

I am in and hoping to stay to the end although I did manage 50 books last year

pippitysqueakity · 01/01/2019 11:32

Can I join too? Nearly finished Christmas inThrush Green by Miss Read, just what I needed over Christmas madness!

DwangelaForever · 01/01/2019 11:35

I've decided to start Snap by Belinda Bauer to see what all the fuss is about, anyone read it?

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2019 11:35

Thanks southeast!

I am a bit tired today but am reading an interesting book about the summer of 1858 One Hot Summer. Should be finished in a couple of days.

whippetwoman · 01/01/2019 11:37

Thank you for the brand new 2019 thread Southeast, I am totally on board again this year and will try and post and review more rather than just read the thread.

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2019 11:37

dwangela , yes. Got a rather 'meh' reaction from most of us but it's a quick read!

weebarra · 01/01/2019 11:43

I'm in! Started on the threads last year but stopped posting although continued following for book recommendations!
Got some good ideas from listening to Woman's Hour yesterday and have a shelf full of TBR books.
