Decent rhyming books for kids?

PersonalClown · 25/06/2007 20:24

Ds is autistic so can't 'read' as such but he loves a good book.
Favourites at the moment are Green eggs and Ham and Pants and I'm getting bored of them every night!
Can anyone recommend a good book with lots of colourful pictures, lots of rhyming and not too long?
Ds is 5 but need to think along the lines of older toddler/young child.
Cheers muchly!

What about the other Dr Suess books? The Sneetches and other stories is a favourite of ours.

Whizzz · 25/06/2007 20:26

The Grufallo & any of the other books by Julia Donaldson & illustrated by Axel Scheffler
I love them !

anything by Julia Donaldson - The Grufallo, A squash and a squeeze, Smartest Giant in Town - they're great - very popular with my 2 (3 and 5)

brandnewhelsy · 25/06/2007 20:27

We had a nice book called Little Pig Figwort which had lots of rhyming in it.
Gruffalo, Smartest Giant in Town, room on the broom - they're good.

hana · 25/06/2007 20:27

the Hairy McClary books are good rhyming books (but I'm not a fan!)

PersonalClown · 25/06/2007 20:28

Collecting the green back Dr Suess books. They're ideal for young children.
Thought about the Gruffalo, is it long to read? Ds starts to loose interest after about 15 mins then wants me to read it over again!

The Ahlbergs, Peepo! is very good, tho possibly a bit young.

Califrau, DS1 could recite the whole of Slinky Malinki when he was about 2, purely phonetically. He had barely a clue what any of it meant, but he loved the sound of it!

Blu · 25/06/2007 20:30

There's a puffin children's collection called 'See You Later escalator' which has lots of poems, themed, mostly rhyming, and good pictures.

How does he like the 'digger' and Emergency' books? oh, who are they by?

What about Hairy McClary?

rantinghousewife · 25/06/2007 20:30

The Gruffalo isn't that long and the room on the broom and a squash and squeeze are only 10 min reads. Think there is a poetry set of books for little ones aswell, can't remember what they're called tho'. Will have a look.

He's lost him in the wood somewhere
Its dark and horrible in there!

FABBO to read. DD adored them

rantinghousewife · 25/06/2007 20:31

Oh, and Duck In A Truck

silverfrog · 25/06/2007 20:31

Any of the Giles Andreae books. Dd1 (nearly 3 and ASD) loves them - they range from fairly long (take 10 mins or so to read) with The Lion who wanted to Love and Giraffes can't dance to shorter, single verses about various animals in Rumble in the Jungle, Farmyard Hullaballoo and COmmotion in the Ocean.

Coolmama · 25/06/2007 20:32

Top 3 books in our house - colours, sounds, pictures and rhymes - are all Bill Martin books. He was an elementary school teacher and also a poet - they are FABULOUS!!!

  1. Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see.
  2. Polar bear, polar bear, what do you hear.
  3. Chicka chicka, boom boom - the ABC book I cannot recommend them highly enough!
oggsfrog · 25/06/2007 20:32

Agree that Julia Donaldson is unsurpassable.

"Where's my teddy" is brilliant

Sarah Hayes and Helen Craig - "This is the Bear" series is good

PersonalClown · 25/06/2007 20:33

Looks like I'm going to be spending a fortune in the book shops soon. (unless I an find them cheaper on Amazon!)
Cali-Do English Cd's work in the States? The pants one is driving me insane! Ds has figured out which is the repeat button and that's all I hear all day!

Slight change of subject...Oggs did you see my post about Doctor Who? Utopia will be shown this Friday on BBC3 at 9pm. They held it back because of Glasto.

My kids (and dh) have all loved the books by Shirley Hughes - Colours, Bathwater's Hot, giving etc. published by Walker Books

They may be too young but they are rather gorgeous books.

oggsfrog · 25/06/2007 20:41

Cheers, PC. Fubsy is actually copying the final three episodes for me, but thanks anyway

PersonalClown · 25/06/2007 20:43

Knew that, just thought I'd mention it in case you couldn't wait!
