I had a thread ages ago and i cant find it now. From that thread I listened to all the Cabin Pressures and adored them . Most of Lian Moriarty although they aregetting abit samey now. Tiny Beautiful Things which was different and led me on to Lauren Grahams autobiography and my, her voice is doing me in. Shes a one trick pony. Im abit stuck now so ive downloaded The Paying Guests as i alwaysclijed Sarah Waters, should i have downloaded The Little Stranger instead? Can you still send then back for free?

Do you like sci-fun? I loved We are Legion (We are Bob).

CramptonHodnet · 06/10/2018 14:50

You can still send books back to Audible for free. I returned one recently that I wasn't enjoying.

But, if it was me, I'd keep both the Sarah Waters novels. I really enjoyed The Paying Guests. And another of hers, Fingersmith, is brilliant. I've got Tipping The Velvet still to listen to and DH bought Affinity recently (book not Audible) as he's enjoying her books now too.

Favourites of mine have been 11.22.63 by Stephen King (time travel not horror), Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Robert Galbraith's (J K Rowling) Cormoran Strike series and Susan Hill's Simon Seraillier novels.

I am halfway through Lonesome Dove on audible and enjoying it so much. I read it when I was a teenager and absolutely loved it - it is just as enjoyable many years later and as an audiobook. I highly recommend.
Others I've enjoyed in last year inlcude:
Circe by Madeline Miller
Louise Penny Inspector Gamache series
Stephen King - Mr Mercedes trilogy

TiddlesUpATree · 06/10/2018 21:37

Best thing I had on audible was 'this is going to hurt'. I cried laughing.

Latenightreader · 06/10/2018 21:44

I love the Chronicles of St Mary's books by Jodi Taylor. A friend nagged me until I started them and I got hooked. Very well narrated too.

I enjoyed Ken Follett's 20th century trilogy (Fall of Giants, Winter of the World, and...another). All long and excellent value!

Anything read by Juliet Stevenson is good too - she's my favourite narrator and I relisten to her Jane Austen books when I need a comfort.

Flightywoman · 06/10/2018 21:50

I got Audible so I could listen to all of the BBC radio 4 series Pilgrim. It's absolutely wonderful - full of magic and strangeness, gorgeous acting and at times moves me to tears. It's a triumph of radio and I am happier than anything to have it.

The complete John Le Carre Smiley books is great too.

And now I'm listening to Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman which is also brilliant.

I always try to go for the long ones!

Robert Webb reading ‘How Not to Be a Boy’

VittysCardigan · 08/10/2018 22:51

La Belle Sauvage - Phillip Pullman. Brilliantly narrated by Michael Sheen
The Poldark books by Winston Graham
The Fair Fight - Anna Freeman
The Silent Companions - Laura Purcell

You beat me to it with Americanah and all the Comoran Strike books, they are brilliant. The narrator is superb in both. Whoever said the radio plays telling the magical story of Pilgrim, I totally agree. One of the best things I have heard on R4, and I have listened for many, many years. 😊

My other recommendations-
Rivers of London series, narrated by the fabulously named Kobna Holbrook Smith and eritten by Ben Aaronovitch.
Crime and Fantasy together, excellent.
Jane Austen I have unabridged narrations and radio adaptations
Tad Williams Dragonbone Chair is the first of the trilogy
Peter Robinson Inspector Banks series
Ian Banks Rebus series, I downloaded the latest yesterday
Kate Atkinson waiting to read Transcriptions when life gets less crazy
Georgette Heyer Narrated by Richard Armstrong, lovely
Sara Paretsky listen in order*
Val McDermid Karen Pirie
David Mitchell
Sue Grafton listen in order
Elizabeth George
Margaret Atwood Oryx and Crake etc
S J Parris listen in order
C J Samson listen in order
Phil Rickman* Merrily Watkins, John Dee listen in order
Andrew Taylor the Fire series
Robert MacCammon stories of early years of New York

And my guilty pleasure
Nora Roberts
J D Robb listen in order

Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes I have the complete works narrated by Stephen Fry, though I find that the chapters aren't titles, so I can't just go to the story I want
Dickens Easier to listen than to read. I am listening to David Copperfield but the torment of young David really upsets me.

I would like some recommendations please!

Life after life by Kate Atkinson. Have listened twice and read the book too. So so beautiful and a lovely listen.

What are you in the mood for?
I’m listening to the stand by Stephen King and really enjoying it, you really get your money’s worth as it’s 40 hours long!

HoraceWimpIsThisYourLife · 09/10/2018 09:10

If you want something lighthearted I enjoyed spectacles by Sue Perkins. A lot of the books by David Sedaris are dry and funny if you like that style.

I also enjoy Jon Ronson, particularly the psychopath test. He has a free podcast style thing on audible you could try called the Butterfly Effect which was really interesting

TapStepBallChange · 19/10/2018 21:35

I've really enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant and Elizabeth is Missing on Audible

Tronkmanton · 19/10/2018 21:38

I’m really enjoying The Blackwater Lightship by Colm Toibin. It’s narrated by Niamh Cusack so very soothing.

GlasgowWorrier · 20/10/2018 20:40

The Alan Partridge 'autobiography', We Need to Talk About Alan, is brilliant on Audible. I have sniggered out loud on public transport.

QueenofLouisiana · 21/10/2018 19:37

I loved The Maggie Murders by Anthony Horowitz. For light relief, Why Mummy Drinks has got me through many nights of insomnia.

spookyspookyspookhole · 21/10/2018 20:52

Just listening to the Man Booker Prize winner Milkman and really enjoying both the book and the narration. Don't normally like the winners but I would recommend this.

Rememory · 22/10/2018 05:25

I'm loving the new Ian Rankin Rebus book at the minute

Blarneybear · 22/10/2018 05:42

Whoever said the radio plays telling the magical story of Pilgrim, I totally agree. One of the best things I have heard on R4, and I have listened for many, many years

I'm so excited about this. I've listened to a couple of these years ago on the radio and absolutely loved it.

frenchfancy · 22/10/2018 05:43

Just finished The Martian by Andy Wier. I really enjoyed it.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 24/10/2018 06:55

The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah.

PumpkinSpiceAmericanoNoSugar · 24/10/2018 13:39

I have just bought, and barely started listening to, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I like him a lot and I love listening to his voice.

hilbobaggins · 26/10/2018 21:21

Completely agree about Chronicles of St Mary’s by Jodie Taylor. Brilliant story-telling, brilliantly narrated and completely addictive - I worked my way quickly through the entire series. I tend to wake up and worry in the middle of the night, and those books were a godsend. Her other books are also fantastic.

All the Light We Cannot See by Antony Doerr was also phenomenal.

RoyalAlfred · 26/10/2018 21:28

Another vote for the Rivers of London series
Another vote for Pilgrim
Loved Lockwood & Co series too
Ditto Bryant & May series
Just discovered Naomi Novick - loved Uprooted and now on Spinning Dilver
