Just came across this. It is fun, but quite scary. Am too embarrassed to reveal my own score here! Don't know if the link will work, and would be grateful if someone more knowledgeable than me could amend it. Thanks

Catch 22 was there MB

Blandmum · 09/06/2007 19:09

In which case my total was 57!

bilblio · 09/06/2007 19:36

88 - I obliviously like 19thC literature. It's reminded me of a lot of other I want to read though.

A lot of the 20thC stuff I only read because of my English Lit degree, and I hated most of them. I also included books I'd started and not finished because a book has to be truly dreadful for me not to plough through it to the end. I don't like admitting defeat.

I thought the Edith Wharton choices were odd too. I've been on a bit of a stint reading everything I could find by her recently, but hardly any of the ones I have read were listed. I'll have to go raiding some new charity shops for her other works

I could've guessed pretty early on that it was compiled by a male, I might get a couple of my male friends to try it and see how they fare.

95

there are some seriously dull booksa there though

Slim · 09/06/2007 20:08

DH has 115

he is swanking

Tickle · 09/06/2007 20:09

63 - ditto biblio, it has reminded me that there are lots of classics I have yet to read, esp in the 21st century section!
Surprised me how many have been made into films too.

BecauseImWorthIt · 09/06/2007 20:16

99 - just less than 10%. and I have an English degree!

There were loads of books I'd never heard of, as well as lots I'd started but could never finish.

Have tried to read Captain Corelli's Mandolin 3 times now and have given up and decided it's just pretentious and actually badly written. (I know loads of you will disagree ...!)

Slim · 09/06/2007 20:19

I have an English degree too - have recounted and got to 100.

DH is horrified that I have never read Treasure Island - 'all that time reading poetry when you could have been reading Treasure Island!'

in my defence A Dance to the Music of Time is lots of books and some of the others are bloody long. I reckon some of the books should get you bonus points, like Thomas Mann which was excruciatingly dull.

Flame · 09/06/2007 20:31

Veeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyy low (34)- but I do have oodles of em sat on my shelves ready to read

They like Mr McEwan don't they!

I don't have an English degree though. Their target for me is very doable - 18 a year.

Slim · 09/06/2007 20:37

Am feeling rather depressed at the idea that I have to read Sebastian Faulks before I die

rather unimaginative list I thought

policywonk · 09/06/2007 20:38

I rather like Mr Faulks. But he is very unfashionable.

Smurfgirl · 09/06/2007 20:47

Haha 66 and i have an English degree.

fillyjonk · 09/06/2007 20:48

am i the only one who can't get onto it?

prob because i'd show you all up...

I couldn't get my pc to calculate the number but it was quite a trip down memory lane for me. There were loads of books I'd read but I couldn't remember why or when or what they were about or what I thought of them. Gormenghast for example.

mummytosteven · 09/06/2007 21:00

phew, 146.

  1. But again, I have read all for example, all edna o'briens, Thomas Hardy, John Steinbeck etc. Lots of interesting ommissions. Many of the ones I haven't read it's because I think I woulf hate them!
TwoIfBySea · 09/06/2007 22:54

Surprised that they included Bus Conductor Hines, I wouldn't have thought many people would have read that. I wrote an essay on it at school and the teacher made it clear she hated the book, still wrote the essay though.

Was also debating whether or not to include books I had to read at school and hated (f*ing Gatsby.) And trying to remember half the books I have read!

Agree that there are some interesting omissions.

Quattrocento · 09/06/2007 23:15
