On holiday and I've finished the book I brought with me. Holiday let has a couple of book shelves of books but no idea what to choose. I think most are detective/ thrillers. I'll read anything but don't want to miss picking a good one. Help please. Pictures of book shelves attached. Thanks.

I'd go for Harlan Coben, PD James and Patricia Cornwell out of that lot. But I'll read any thriller, really!

superram · 26/08/2018 18:27

Out of those I’d read Kathy reichs 206 bones, the Tess Gerritson and Harlem coben. I’ve read 8 books in 8 days and dreading having to read the Jody piccoult. I have my kindle but like reading in the pool and on beach.

AmabelleOnabike · 26/08/2018 18:29

Harlan Coben is fairly light reading but entertaining. Also Tess Gerritsen and Peter James but if you haven't read Eleanor Oliphant, you must!

whiskeysourpuss · 26/08/2018 18:30

Out of those I'd go for Kathy Reichs but I've read that book, Harlan Coben but not the Myron Bolitar one or the Tess Gerritson

MrsAird · 26/08/2018 18:31

'Elinor Oliphant is Completely Fine'. There it is on the first photo. It is really good. Not a thriller.

MrsAird · 26/08/2018 18:33

sorry 'Eleanor'.

Peachypips · 26/08/2018 18:33

Goodness that's a weak selection! I'd go for the PD James.

Lindtnotlint · 26/08/2018 18:33

Elinor Oliphant!!!!

Fourfantasticfrogs · 26/08/2018 18:37

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Eleanor Oliphant is the one I've read. Loved it and these are a bit of a mind shift from that one.

Go for the Jeffery archer! Always page turners

mansplain111 · 26/08/2018 18:40

ian Rankin is pretty damn good.

OreliaRoc · 26/08/2018 18:45

If you like fantasy books then you'll probably like Lev Grossman's The Magicians from that selection. It's a sort of grown up version of a cross between Harry Potter and the Narnia books. Its part of a series but you can read the first book as a stand-alone. I enjoyed it.

Gloopy · 26/08/2018 18:47

Ian Rankin, Stephen King and James Patterson.

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/08/2018 18:48

I'd re-read the Ian Rankin then the PD James, both excellent.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 26/08/2018 18:49

I've read and enjoyed a few Harlen Coben books, easy reading for a holiday. I used to enjoy James Patterson, but the lastfew I read were collaborations and I found them very formulaic and lacking compared to his earlier stuff. I don't mind Kathy Reichs and I really like Ian Rankin ''S Inspector Rebus stories. Holidays are a great opportunity to discover new authors. Hopefully you'll find one you like.

virtuousfantine · 26/08/2018 18:50

The Pelican Brief by Grisham is fantastic

Littlegoth · 26/08/2018 18:51

I’ve read all the James Patterson books there and enjoyed them, especially Mary,Mary

worstmotherintheworld · 26/08/2018 18:53

Eleanor Oliphant is a lovely read and I would think very different to everything else on the shelf. I usually like Victoria Hislop books (generally set in Greece) but haven't read The Thread. Tess Gerritson is very readable. Most of it seems like a bit of a man's book selection!

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 26/08/2018 18:54

Ian Rankin followed by PD James

Lucked · 26/08/2018 18:58

I have never been in a ho,day let with such a well stocked bookshelf!

Fourfantasticfrogs · 26/08/2018 19:11

Thanks all. I'm going to try a Harlan Coben one. Those who recommended him are they stand alone? I'd completely forgotten that Ian Rankin wrote the Rebus series so a good standby and I haven't read the one here.

From that selection I'd read 'The Pelican Brief' first then onto Harlem Coburn - although they're stand alone, there is a sense to trying to read them in order for back story stuff.

Sparklyfee · 26/08/2018 19:25

Post-mortem. Fantastic book

EvilRingahBitch · 26/08/2018 19:25

Oh dear. I think I’d go for the PD James.

I had the opposite problem on holiday - well-stocked but incredibly highbrow bookshelves full of 20th century classics, Virago and Shakespeare. I ended up reading The Turn of The Screw from a Henry James collection.

efeslight · 26/08/2018 19:28

PD James, Tess gerritson second choice.
