The entire murder investigation series by Chris Carter (Robert Hunter series) is incredibly dark, creepy, gory and well written.

Fingermoose · 27/06/2018 13:20

It's not recent but House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski is extremely creepy.

GirlCroosh · 27/06/2018 13:21

The diving pool by Yoko Ogawa. It's 3 short stories about people doing bad things. I read it last year and it's stayed with me. It's not horror, I guess I would describe it as unsettling or haunting. Highly recommended.

I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurdardorttir.

marmiteloversunite · 27/06/2018 13:35

I just read The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. So creepy I couldn't go to bed. Also read it in one day. It was excellent.

CoteDAzur · 27/06/2018 13:37

What are "very creepy books"?

Can you give an example so we know what to recommend?

Murder mystery? Horror? Suspense?

His Bloody Project

Second House of Leaves.

Dark Matter by Michelle Pacer and Little Stranger by Sarah Waters are the creepiest books I've ever read. So atmospheric. Have heard lots of good things about the Silent Companions mentioned above.

EachandEveryone · 28/06/2018 19:05

Ive sent her the first two Robert Hunter books and she said shes read the author before and likes him. She said unfortunately she cant pass them on to my mother though as they are far too gory

Bird box by Josh Malerman is very atmospheric and creepy.

cdtaylornats · 01/07/2018 20:16

Any Mo Hyder book.

I lent Pig Island to a friend and was told never to let him read another of her books

OutofTyme · 01/07/2018 20:32

The Fifth Child is an unsettling book...

alialiath · 02/07/2018 13:34

I second LawDegreeBarbie's choice of Chris Carter's Robert Hunter books.

RiverTam · 02/07/2018 13:37

Not recent but Salem's Lot by Stephen King is by far and away the scariest book I have ever read. I wouldn't read it if I was alone in the house or after dark.
And The Wonan in Black by Susan Hill.
I didn't find The Silent Companions that scary, it felt very unoriginal.

I was going to post precisely this comment! Both books are wonderfully unsettling.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 02/07/2018 13:39

Under The Skin by Michel Faber

Way better than the film

Lone female driving round looking for lone hitchhikers that match certain criteria

But what’s she doing to them ?

And why ?

FelineG · 02/07/2018 20:35

The Loney and Devil’s Day by Andrew Michael Hurley.

ImAGoofyGoober · 02/07/2018 20:38

Does she like true crime? I got this book recently and really enjoyed learning through it. Not a story as such but good all the same.

PinkBuffalo · 02/07/2018 20:38

rivertam agree with you re: salems lot! Always have sleepless nights when I've read that!
Also, IT by Stephen king was very good.

Dottierichardson · 02/07/2018 21:50

Isn't this a zombie thread now? The OP bought a present for her sister a while ago? Or are we setting her up for Christmas!

EachandEveryone · 04/07/2018 01:04

Does it matter? Im all for recommendations and i love the odd thriller myself.

The joe ledger series by Johnathon Mayberry, crime but using zombies and plagued and things like that

OutofTyme · 04/07/2018 04:56

For heavens sake. The zombie thread police need to do one. For one thing it's not a zombie thread and for another I have found this thread useful as well.

OutofTyme · 04/07/2018 05:01

I've read IT. It is good but very long. I wish Steven King wouldn't take away from the narrative with these long discourses too. But IT is certainly a very compelling read.
