You all seem like a good bunch to ask. I've read far too much and have become very bored with the poor plots and predictable storylines. I haven't read a really good book in ages - you know something that is original or sticks in your head. Whats the last really good book you read?

The Book Thief

tis really really good.

review here

Thoroughly enjoyed it

Just finished 'The Lovely Bones' and thoroughly enjoyed it. Have you read anything by Jasper Fforde? They're very funny and definitely not like anything else around.

littledawley · 15/05/2007 21:10

The Kite Runner was really excellent! Really, really excellent.

Also, they are essentially children's books but have you read Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy? Fantastic and being made into a film so will get even more popular.

the No1 ladies dective agency is one of 2in a series and is really easy reading but is very good think it is a true story too or at least based on one

highonlife · 15/05/2007 21:11

Would echo the kite runner, excellently written and something to get your teeth into

Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood - best book I've EVER EVER read.

Londonmamma · 15/05/2007 21:13

Arlington Park by Rachel Cusk
I also loved Oryx and Crake

rowan1971 · 15/05/2007 21:13

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, by Susannah Clarke

Or

Crimson Petal and the White, by Michel Faber

Both Victorian London novels, the first a bit fantastical, the second (about a prostitute) VERY explicit and gritty. Both completely fab.

Third in an occasional series of Victorian London novels: Fingersmith, by Sarah Waters. Stonking.

Small Island by Andrea Levy

Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell

highonlife · 15/05/2007 21:15

'The Girls' by Lori Lansens is an interesting read, well written and unusual. Also if you are looking for something different 'We need to talk about Kevin', excellent and unpredictable

rislip · 15/05/2007 21:16

The tenderness of wolves, just started it and had me hooked in within a few pages.

ZisforZebra · 15/05/2007 21:27

In the last two months I've read:-

American Gods, Neverwhere and Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman which were all really good.

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly and The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffennegger which were both amazing.

I've just finished 'This Book will Save Your Life' by A.M. Homes which was very engaging. Not a race-through story but more a collection of incidents which, when put together, make a great book.

I've also read The Lovely Bones (very good) and My Sister's Keeper (don't read it in public unless you like crying like a loon with an audience)

lilibet · 15/05/2007 21:30
