Authors I have read and generally like:

David Eddings
Anne McCaffrey
J. V. Jones
Melanie Rawn
Robert Jordan
Terry Pratchett

Basically I like magic, dragons, etc!

What other authors might I like please, as I am running out of books to read by these authors?

Cool, will look in a minute.
The Waylander series are good. Think they are David Gemmell.

Ending of the last one is the best ending to a book I have ever read. And there are a few of them. Can't remember how many.

BandofMothers · 07/05/2007 08:44

Terry Goodkind is good but didn't you think they got a bit samey after the first 5 or 6. Same turns of phrase and things all the time???

LittleSarah · 07/05/2007 08:49

Yes he is beginning to annoy me. I like Robin Hobbs and JV Jones because they do short series that are much easier to deal with. I loved TG at first, loved, loved him. Now the war seems to be spiraling out of control while he is off doing random quests and you wonder how many more are to come...

Rather like Robert Jordan. Don't get him!! You'll just read a million books and realise there are a million more to come and by the time no million and one comes out you'll have forgotton what happen in no a million. (Very good though).

What about Feist?? Magician is fantastic.

yacketyblah · 07/05/2007 08:53

I like Katherine Kerr's Deverry series - no dragons, more a mix of celtic history and magic, very interesting. Also Barbra Hambly - the silent tower and the silicon mage. Again no dragons, but magic again. Also agree with everyone about Neil Gaiman - Smoke and Mirrors can be disturbing but also funny and clever.

I know you don't like dark stuff - but neither did I until I read Clive Barker - Imajica is such a fascinating story and I really got drawn in to it. Warning though - it is more than dark, can be quite horrific in places.

I did wonder about the Jordan ones as I think there are about 11. Which is why I've never really started. I actually like long series as long as they're good, and stay interesting. HATE finishing a good series where I love the characters. It's like someone's died or something, tho obviously less so DYKWIM???

DragonRiders of Pern are my all time favourite, and there are about 16 at least and her son is taking over. His books are almost nearly as good as hers. It's hard to tell the difference.

Ooh and tho there is no dragons and magic as such, Jean M Auel's Earth Children books are amazing. Clan of the Cave Bear is the first one, and tho they made an awful film of it years ago the book is much better. And I can see why she wouldn't give permission for them to do any more

LittleSarah · 07/05/2007 09:43

If you like long series then RJ may be for you. I find that I have forgotton a lot of what has happened while waiting for books to be published!

BandofMothers · 07/05/2007 09:48

That is a good point, am currently waiting for the next Earth Children's to be written. Agonising. The last one took 10 yrs as she was really ill. Wouldn't it be awful if an author died and left everyone hanging for the next book.
at myself for being so selfish.

The Dragon Prince ones might confuse you then. There are a couple of generations in them as it spans the main characters lifetime and they all seem to name their kids after other family members with a slight difference and it is very confusing. Luckily there is a character list name with whose dc they are on it, but I was irritated by having to look all the time. That was more in the second trilogy tho.

Shoshable · 07/05/2007 09:52

Ive got all the Earth Children Books, fantastic books, been reading them from since Clan came out.

BandofMothers · 07/05/2007 09:59

Isn't it Aaaaaaaaaargh when you haev to wait years.
Am eagerly awaiting the next one, and the last Harry Potter of course.

bewilderbeast · 07/05/2007 10:02

try the farseer trilogy by robin hobb

LittleSarah · 07/05/2007 10:04

What Dragon Prince ones do you mean?? I don't mind new generations and stuff. Feist has lots of different inter-connected series' with siblings and children and grandchildren of the original characters but I can get into that because the stories are new.

Have heard of Jean M Aaul and would like to read her though.

LittleSarah · 07/05/2007 10:05

(PS Have you read the Magician? If not, I really really reccommend)

BandofMothers · 07/05/2007 10:09

Melanie Rawn wrote the Dragon Prince Trilogy, and another that follows on from them. They are very good.
I don't mind the generation stuff at all. But it is quite confusing.

I haven't read it no, but I now have a lovely long list of books to read.

LittleSarah · 07/05/2007 10:11

You know, with Harry Potter you can always remember what's happened, I really wish some of the more complex books would put a little summary of the last book at the beginning!

BandofMothers · 07/05/2007 10:29

That is a very good idea, write to publishers and suggest it.
It would be handy after a substantial wait for the new one.

Daemara · 14/05/2007 14:16

only just found this thread and I would recommend
Elizabeth Kerner Song In the Silence
Mark Chadbourn -The age of Misrule Series
Elizabeth Hayden -Rhapsody, Prophecy
Alice Borchardt -The Dragon Queen series
Trudi Canavan The Magicians' Guild (The Black Magician Trilogy, Book 1)
Daughter of the Forest (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Book 1) by Juliet Marillier
Poison Study by Maria Snyder
Anne Bishop The Black Jewels Trillogy

I'm a great fan of fantasy, sci-fi and so on but recently have turned to some slightly darker material Laurell K Hamilton, Kim Harrison,
Vicki Pettersson, Kelley Armstrong ect. all very good reads.
maybe I read too much.
