Authors I have read and generally like:

David Eddings
Anne McCaffrey
J. V. Jones
Melanie Rawn
Robert Jordan
Terry Pratchett

Basically I like magic, dragons, etc!

What other authors might I like please, as I am running out of books to read by these authors?

I sMelanie Rawn the one that wrote the Dragon Prince series about Sunreunners??

If not I will go and look at my copy and find out who did cost they're excellent.

BandofMothers · 06/05/2007 20:46

You might like Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. The one the mini series with Jullianna Marguilies from ER in. The book is 50 X better ad so much more involved. No dragons, but magic and priestesses, and Merlin. Very Cool.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 06/05/2007 20:47

I'm not sure BandofMothers. I don't think I've read that!

Oooh, yes, I should have said I have read and love Marion Zimmer Bradley!

China Mieville's Perdido Street Station is excellent.

Raymond E Feists Magician series are also well know as really good examples of the genre.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 06/05/2007 20:50

Have checked and it is Melanie Rawn who wrote the Dragon Prince series so I must read those (have only read her Exiles books and am anxiously awaiting the writing of the last one). Thanks BoM!

Ursula K LeGuin

Marian Zimmer Bradley - The Firebrand / Mists of Avalon

will think on

TheArmadillo · 06/05/2007 20:56

Have you tried Tom Holt (funny) or Robin Briggs?

Robin Briggs Magic Kingdom For Sale series is good (though written I think with children in mind) and quite funny. He has written another more serious series as well that I have never really got into.

mummytosteven · 06/05/2007 20:56

Neil Gaiman
Robert Rankin
Some of the Diana Wynn Jones books.

BandofMothers · 06/05/2007 20:59

Also if youlook on my profile you'll see I'm also a nutter for the same books as you. The DeathGate cycle are absolutely brilliant.

The first Trilogy of Dragon Prince are good, the 2nd are good but drawn out.
would still recommend them tho.

Will also think some more.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 06/05/2007 21:24

That Deathgate Cycle rings bells - I think I must have read it ages ago. Wow, lots of books to read, now I just have to get the children to bed early!

neil gaiman would agree with too, plus at the moment i am liking alice borchardt. the dragon queen was very good and am now on the raven warrior.

TheArmadillo · 06/05/2007 22:19

Neil Gamain is fantastic. Have you read 'Good Omens' that he wrote with Pratchett?
Smoke and Mirrors is a book of short stories he wrote that is really good. If you get upset easily DON'T READ BABYCAKES!

Gamain can be very very creepy/scary.

jamieboo · 06/05/2007 22:35

my favourite is neverwhere. nice and dark! stardust has been made into a film. however sienna miller has been cast into it, but luckily as the bimbo.

maximummummy · 06/05/2007 22:38

i love neil gaiman
bet you'd love STARDUST (which is being released as a film very soon)

maximummummy · 06/05/2007 22:39

ooh i just got NEVERWHERE on dvd

marthamoo · 06/05/2007 22:41

I was going to recommend my thread - glad you found it (I'm enjoying Magician...about halfway through)

GreatGooglyMoogly · 07/05/2007 00:46

Hi marthamoo! I've realised after looking at amazon that I have read the Magician series! Very good as I recall.

Don't think I like the sound of Neil Gaiman - I don't do dark!

OP posts:
maximummummy · 07/05/2007 00:53

don't be put off neil gaiman has a dark side but also a really good writing style that really draws you in
god i sound like a gaiman dealer

GythaOggsFrog · 07/05/2007 00:54

You have to read the "Robert Jordan" "Wheel of Time" series......excellent

BandofMothers · 07/05/2007 07:23

Gytha, I bought the first Wheel of time boook at a boot sale not long ago, but never got past the first chapter as there was something else waiting to be read.
Does it take a while to crack into??
I found the first DeathGate took me about 1/3 of the book to get into, and was frustrated by the change of scene for each subsequent books(there are 7), but lovede them cos it's all tied up in the last one.
They are great and I've just reread them and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Course, have hardly read anything, or written since finding MN. DOH.
Marthamoo, can you link your thread please.???

Please excuse my typing, I am really tired

themaskedposter · 07/05/2007 08:13

I quite like Hugh Cook and have read about the first 5 or so in the Chronicles of an Age of Darkness series. Most of them you can pick up cheap, however there is one or two of the series that are rather rare and are sold for extortionate prices!

GythaOggsFrog · 07/05/2007 08:39

BoM, here is the other fantasy thread.

Loads of good suggestions.

LittleSarah · 07/05/2007 08:42

Robin Hobb
TERRY GOODKIND
Neil Gaiman
Terry Brooks
