...everything by Donna Tartt, Victoria Hislop, CJ Sansom, Sebastian Faulks and Sarah Waters, what will I love next?

I'm pregnant, poorly and bored. Please recommend me something you loved!

Kate Atkinson? The Goldfinch.

PaperdollCartoon · 31/01/2018 16:41

Kate Atkinson - Life After Life. I couldn’t put it down.

CocktailsAndDreams · 31/01/2018 16:42

Light Between The Oceans by M.L. Stedman.

Fwend · 31/01/2018 18:43

Thank you! I loved The Goldfinch. I was genuinely sad when I came to the end.

I'll have a look at your suggestions. Smile

Pittcuecothecookbook · 31/01/2018 18:56

Oh following

Pittcuecothecookbook · 31/01/2018 18:57

Any Human Heart - William Boyd

lastqueenofscotland · 31/01/2018 19:10

Handful of dust - Evelyn Waugh
A Kind of Loving - Stan Barstow

Almostthere15 · 31/01/2018 19:14

I was coming on to say the light between oceans. I loved that book.

It's a bit different to some you've listed but Purple Hibiscus by chimande-adiche is stand out for me.

massistar · 31/01/2018 19:21

Sounds like we have very similar taste .. I’ve just finished The Ballroom by Anna Hope which I loved. Currently reading The Danish Girl but I’m not quite as enamoured by that.

massistar · 31/01/2018 19:24

Also loved The Bees by Laline Paull. Different to anything else I’ve ever read but couldn’t put it down and found it really intriguing.

muminmanchester · 31/01/2018 19:25

Following too; it sounds like we have the exact same taste and I’m in need of a new read!

Have you read The Lose Wife by Alyson Richman? Also Mudbound by Hillary Jordan

muminmanchester · 31/01/2018 19:25

That’s the LOST wife, not lose wife!!

ladyratterley · 31/01/2018 19:27

Ooh those are all right up my street. Following this thread with interest.
Hand you read My Cousin Rachel? I was gripped by that.

muminmanchester · 31/01/2018 19:29

I’m reading Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty just now which is also good

Pittcuecothecookbook · 31/01/2018 19:43

Another vote for My Cousin Rachel too.

AdaColeman · 31/01/2018 19:44

False Lights by K J Whittaker if you like convoluted plots.

Fwend · 01/02/2018 19:24

I loved My Cousin Rachel.

Some great suggestions here, thank you! My amazon account is going to take a bashing.

I've just finished Camino Island today for a quick, easy read. I liked it, although now I'm craving sunshine.

I've got Magpie Murders, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and Women & Power on my bedside table - those, plus recommendations above will keep me busy. Thank you!

.

Nightmanagerfan · 01/02/2018 19:28

You absolutely have to read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara if you like Donna Tartt.

It’s 700 pages but I honestly wished it was longer!!

Fwend · 01/02/2018 19:49

700 pages? Count me in! Grin

Ihana · 01/02/2018 20:01

I have very similar taste and was just going to say A Little Life. Did think it could have been a little shorter but it was beautiful (and harrowing).

ladyratterley · 01/02/2018 20:57

I’ve just bought A Little Life, thanks for the recommendations.
I haven’t read it for years but it might be worth a few of you checking out What I Loved by Siri Hustvedt. I might re read it soon. The characters are brilliant and it’s a bit Donna Tart-esque.

Tarahumara · 01/02/2018 21:04

OP, based on your list I would recommend:

Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell
The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver
The Children’s Book - AS Byatt
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena - Anthony Marra

thewalrus · 11/02/2018 21:21

Definitely the Poisonwood Bible if you haven't read it.

I've just finished the Muse by Jessie Burton which was great (and I much preferred it to her previous book, which I was slightly disappointed by).
Commonwealth, by Anne Patchett.
A Little Life, which someone recommend up thread, is a very good book, but incredibly harrowing. Not sure I could have coped with it with pregnancy hormones too (though I was on bedrest for a fair bit of pregnancy, so can definitely see the appeal of 700 pages!).
