I loved Commonwealth by Ann Patchett too, best book I read last year after All the Light we Cannot See. Also Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeline Thein is superb - an epic Chinese family history, brilliantly written great story and characters.

Oh and one I often recommend is The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell. I much preferred it to Cloud Atlas
