50 Book Challenge 2018 Part One

southeastdweller · 01/01/2018 09:26

Welcome to the first thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2018, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

Who's in for this year?

OP posts:
SaDo12 · 01/01/2018 16:58

Love to join this - I tend to re-read old favourites. Currently reading Gone with the Wind and I love autobiographies.

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2018 16:58

I liked Lincoln and really enjoyed Luminaries and God in Ruins was ok but preferred a couple of her others. You should be off to an interesting start, ginger anyway!

To newcomers, we try and put book titles and nicknames in bold so it’s easier to pick out recommendations and follow the thread of conversations when we’re talking about multiple books at once, it seems to work quite well.

It’s been ages since I read Our Man in Havana but I remember finding it funny so bear with it perhaps remus. I’ve been wanting to reread it.

Hammy12345 · 01/01/2018 16:58

Count me in! Just started 'can you keep a secret' by Karen Perry

MegBusset · 01/01/2018 17:00

Ontopofthesunset I adore Mason & Dixon - my favourite of Pynchon's big novels, so worth sticking with if you like him. I wonder if he'll write another huge novel again - I do hope so.

I've got three books on the go at the moment - Julian Cope's mighty Megalithic European, Arthur Koestler's Darkness At Noon and Welsh folk tale collection The Mabiginion. Also got a big pile on request from the library and a couple of Kindle cheap/freebies including the Peter Hook biog.

brizzledrizzle · 01/01/2018 17:11

I'm in. I've read some of Jeffrey archers free short stories today as part of the year of stories. It's a publicity drive for his books which I won't be buying but I do enjoy them.

I'm trying to not buy any books this year and reading some of the 800 odd books on my kindle, I've had it for donkeys years and have too many accumulated. I read 110 last year, a record for me.

CheerfulMuddler · 01/01/2018 17:17

I'm wavering as to whether I want to be on the thread again this year or not. I really loved being part of it last year and it definitely helped me to read more, which is one of the things I wanted 2017 to be about. This year is looking hideously busy though, both with work and life, and I know I'm unlikely to be reading anywhere near 50. So ... I'm not sure if being on here will make me sad about that or will help me stay connected with books etc. I did want to say thank you to everyone on last year's thread though, for being such an interesting bunch of folk to talk books with. It was a joy.

lynmilne65 · 01/01/2018 17:17

Me too please

ScribblyGum · 01/01/2018 17:27

Happy New Year to all.

Continuing with Johnathan Strange and Mr Norrell, only at 20% at the moment as proper reading time over Christmas has proved almost impossible, but absolutely loving it.

Also need to crack on and finish The Dark is Rising with the dc too.

MegBusset · 01/01/2018 17:30

Ah, I hope you stick with us Cheerful and don't worry about making the 50! I've had a couple of years where I didn't even get close for various life reasons.

Anyway I can officially start the 2018 count with:

  1. The Megalithic European - Julian Cope

An encyclopaedic and highly enjoyable (if you're interested in prehistoric culture) guide to the Megalithic monuments of mainland Europe, following his British guide (also recommended) The Modern Antiquarian.

Cope is a hugely knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, and this book is crammed with fascinating facts, gorgeous pics and entertaining field notes.

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2018 17:37

Yes don’t worry about the numbers cheerful, come in and out as you need to.

DesdemonasHandkerchief · 01/01/2018 17:38

Play of room for you in the Slow Readers Corner Cheerful Grin

DesdemonasHandkerchief · 01/01/2018 17:39

*plenty 🙄

yummyeclair · 01/01/2018 17:41

Hi , I am reading the Michael Connelly Bosch series and going to try and read as many as possible !

Kittykat2027 · 01/01/2018 17:43

Count me in please, I am. A big Karin slaughter, Tania carver lynda la plante, Martina Cole and Chris mooney fan. I do like the real life stories to, stories which inspire me or make me cry. Definitely in.

LadyWithLapdog · 01/01/2018 18:02

I've finished the first book of 2018: The Wonder by Emma Donoghue. I haven't read anything else by her so I've just ordered a couple. She's a good writer.

Murine · 01/01/2018 18:18

I'm in! I bought a few from the kindle January sale this morning: Burning Bright by Helen Dunmore, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell and The Choice by Edith Eger but there wasn't much else that interested me.

I'm currently reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet and The Sixteen Trees of the Somme by Lars Mytting, not far into them but excellent first impressions of both.

unenthusiasticfuturedancemom · 01/01/2018 18:23

I'm joining. Will RTFT for inspiration for my first book. Excited!

biscuitbasket · 01/01/2018 18:57

the wonder is my first book of the year too lady! You are much faster than me, only 1/3 of the way through but enjoying it so far. I liked (?) the room of hers previously, and it's great that the book is v different...

noodlezoodle · 01/01/2018 18:59

I'm in! Made it to 45 last year, determined to get to 50 this year. I'm also doing the popsugar reading challenge again, but I'm going to be less regimented about it this year, as I got stuck on a few 'challenge required' books last time and it slowed me down.

Yummy I love the Bosch series, going to collect the new one from the library when it opens tomorrow.

CrazyDuchess · 01/01/2018 19:02

I'd like in please Grin (do audio books count?) I am currently reading Dorothy Koomson when I
was invisible

Really excited to join in!

Jenniferturkington · 01/01/2018 19:04

Yes I'll join in please. I followed the thread last year but only managed 25/50. I am determined to get closer this year. I must start reading during the day and not just for half an hour at bedtime!
I've just starting Pet Semetary so probably best read in the day light anyway!

Indigosalt · 01/01/2018 19:04

Happy New Year everyone! I'm definitely in. I fell off the thread last year, but I did manage to read 62 books, many of them recommended by other thread contributors, so thank you.

This year I am going to really try and push myself to read 70 books. I would also like to read a bit more non-fiction. All suggestions welcome!

I have just started reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. So far I'm finding it OK, not great though. I can't seem to get my head round the really short chapters; it feels a bit stop start iyswim. I also read a lot of fiction about world war two last year, and think I might have over done it a bit. The reviews are fantastic though, so I will keep going with it.

shhhfastasleep · 01/01/2018 19:08

Got into the thirties last year. Read loads and then faded and then got stuck in again. Just started Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.
Love the ideas on here

TeaMeBasil · 01/01/2018 19:09

I'm in! I'm counting audiobooks too as I sometimes listen to them at work when doing a dull job. Ive set my goodreads challenge to 50 and determined to up last ears 38.

Starting with Handmaids Tale 😊

LadyWithLapdog · 01/01/2018 19:14

Biscuitbasket I started it two days ago. It's a book club choice. Now I've started Danny Bakers latest autobiography volume.
