50 Book Challenge 2018 Part One

southeastdweller · 01/01/2018 09:26

Welcome to the first thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2018, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

Who's in for this year?

OP posts:
Valerrie · 01/01/2018 10:34

I'm in!

ClashCityRocker · 01/01/2018 10:36

TooExtra I love the first five or so books of the dark tower. Didn't mind the last one, but hated song of susannah

A shame because it's an excellent series, but the last couple felt rather rushed... And in some places, quite self-indulgent on Mr King's part.

ChessieFL · 01/01/2018 10:37

I’m in! Started Jacob’s Room Is Full Of Books by Susan Hill this morning. Not sure it will be one of my highlights of the year though, I’m about a quarter of the way in and so far it’s just ok.

weebarra · 01/01/2018 10:41

I fell off the thread last year and don't know how many I managed!
I have The Dry and The Long Song to read, as well as the last two Red Rising books.

raglansleeve · 01/01/2018 10:41

I'd love to join - my reading over the last few years has been dire, I take a book to bed, read 10 minutes then fall asleep. DH used to buy me the Booker shortlist for Christmas every year, but I started finding the books too depressing, so I have about 10 that I haven't read.

I also have the whole Persephone catalogue - my beloved Dad died 18 months ago, and I bought the whole lot with some money he left me. I had lovely plans last summer of reading them in a deckchair in the garden. We then had about 2 sunny days so that idea went out the window!

Currently reading Elizabeth Taylor's A View of the Harbour.

CoffeeOrSleep · 01/01/2018 10:42

Signing in! (New name for 2018 as I got outed in RL) About 20 pages left on last book so will finish later today and update with book 1!

ProfessorLayton1 · 01/01/2018 10:42

Have always lurked on the 50books challenge thread.
Will give it a go this year Smile
Have started my first book Tout sweet - recommended here on one of the threads. After Sapiens and Homo Deus wanted something lighthearted

wasthataburp · 01/01/2018 10:42

I'm in! Just started One of us is Lying so that can be my first book

mamapants · 01/01/2018 10:44

I might join this year. Dipped in and out lurking on last year's thread. I'm slowly getting back in to reading but definitely not at 50 a year stage yet.
Read His Bloody History off the back of last year's thread and really enjoyed it.
Got Neil gaimans Norse Mythology for Xmas so going to start with that, then try and work through books I've bought and never got round to reading.

happytobemrsg · 01/01/2018 10:52

I'm in! I always read to & from work so could easily manage 50 books. Will be more of a challenge being home with a toddler but I know I'm grumpy if I'm not in the middle of a book! I'm doing a "no spend January" so I will have to re-read books this month. I'll. one back and let you know what I choose

Sonnet · 01/01/2018 10:53

I'm in!
First book is my January book group read He Said/She Said by Erin Kelly
Glad to be back!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/01/2018 10:58

Going to have a bash at this this year as have so many unread books.

First book is Old Filth

lastqueenofscotland · 01/01/2018 11:16

Me! First book is the island of sheep by John buchan

AnnaMagdalenaGluck · 01/01/2018 11:29

Happy New Year everybody. I didn't survive on here beyond February last year so I'm hoping to do very much better this year.

I have two ambitions in 2018:- to read about a third of my books in German if possible, and to actually finish The Ambassadors. I've started it twice in the past and got about a quarter of the way in before giving up. If I do manage to finish it, I may also have another go at Anna Karenina which is another book I can't seem to finish.

At the moment I'm reading Winter Solstice - I've had the lurgy over Christmas and am still feeling a bit washed out and feeble, so needed something undemanding.

libertyonhertravels · 01/01/2018 11:37

I am going to try this! Starting with Truman Capote, In Cold Blood.

magimedi · 01/01/2018 11:55

I'm in & hope to stick to it this year.

AnnaMagdalenaGluck - I read Anna Karenina some years ago (pre kindles) when I ran out of books on holiday & it was the only English book I could find. Didn't think I was going to like it but loved it & have re read it since.

Currently half way through Sarum & am getting a bit tired of it - it's becoming a bit fomulaic. The same families appear in it down through the years & the same things seem to happen to them all.

RiverTamFan · 01/01/2018 11:56

Happy New Year everyone and thank you for the new thread southeastdweller !

I have started reading the novelization of Rogue One to get myself going and DH has bought me a bedside lamp I can actually read by!

exexpat · 01/01/2018 11:56

Didn't join the threads last year but did manage to read more than 60 books, so hoping to repeat that this year. I have at least 50 unread books around the house to start with, and will undoubtedly end up buying more during the year (book shop addict).

Last year's reading tally was at least 90% fiction, but I want to read more non-fiction this year. Anyone else also looking at non-fiction?

Current reading: half way through The Dark Flood Rises by Margaret Drabble - first one of hers I have read since the 1980s, I think.

Passmethecrisps · 01/01/2018 12:00

I am checking in!

I didn’t make 50 books thanks to life happening but this thread took me from probably 4 or 5 the year before to 33 so thank you so much.

I intend to start as I mean to go on and get fired into my Vera Stanhope book.

Teufelsrad · 01/01/2018 12:01

Are you enjoying The Dark Flood Rises, Exexpat? It's sitting on my bedside table, and has been for weeks, but I haven't made a start on it yet.

Teufelsrad · 01/01/2018 12:04

Can I sneak in? I read 125 books last year but that's not especially high for me,and I tend to go from one extreme(34 books in January) to the other (Just 1 in April). My mental health has been terrible so I've had a lot of reading slumps. I'm hoping to be a more consistent reader this year.

Kuriusoranj · 01/01/2018 12:04

I'm in. I actually managed the 100 books challenge a couple of years ago, but god it was a slog. 50 I can do. Will have a look for my first one shortly, then update.

AnnaMagdalenaGluck · 01/01/2018 12:12

magimedi I quite enjoyed AK while I was actually reading it but it's fatal if I put it down for more than 24 hours or so. I just seem to run out of steam and can't face picking it back up.

I did actually manage to finish War and Peace two or three years ago - after a monumental effort - so it can be done Grin

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 01/01/2018 12:13

I scrapped 50, just over, last year. I'm not bothered whether or not I improve on that number wise. I'm going to read anything and everything that takes my fancy, with an eye to those denoted as favourites on these threads, such as "Lincoln in The Bardo" which I was given for Christmas. I am starting the year with another Christmas present, "How Hard Can It Be" a follow up, albeit with a big gap, to "I Don't know How She Does It"

Happy good reading for 2018 everybody.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 01/01/2018 12:16

typo scraped, not scrapped.
