Recently read woman in black which I enjoyed. I'd never read horror genre before. Follows by girl on the landing but was very underwhelmed. Any recommendations for a good scare

Try anything by Mo Hayder.

While not strictly horror, I would classify her books as a mix of thriller and horror - scary and creepy but also edge of your seat page turners that are just brilliant.

The Haunting of Hill House is nicely creepy in a similar way to The Woman in Black.

squirre1 · 04/12/2017 14:00

I like Joe Hill. The heart shaped box was eerie

BabloHoney · 05/12/2017 12:05

There is a great thread on Stephen King books on here, so many wonderful books to choose from!

Good Me, Bad Me by Ali Land or You by Caroline Kepnes - not horror as such, but very creepy.

VittysCardigan · 05/12/2017 12:11

I came on to suggest Heart shaped Box by Joe Hill but have been beaten to it! (Joe Hill is the son of Stephen King)

I have just read & enjoyed Thin Air by Michelle Paver

Saw this post and was going to recommend the woman in black! Just finished this myself

LJ17xx · 05/12/2017 17:02

I saw the book for the angel of death. Don't know how good it'll be though as I'm guessing it's a book of the film?

bobbyshafter · 05/12/2017 17:06

Don't Look Now - a short story by Daphne Du Maurier. Creepy as.

Mulch · 05/12/2017 18:30

There's a fantastic book called Night Film by marisha pessl which I can't recommend highly enough. Set around horror movies but it's not horror fiction (I'm a wuss)

TheEagle · 05/12/2017 18:38

Mo Hayder is certainly scary. Her novels also deal with very grim subject matter - paedophilia, incest, graphic accounts of murder/rape.

I felt sick after reading one of hers and I wish I’d never given the other one a go. Just to warn you!

I’ve seen House of Leaves recommended over and over as a scary one to try.

Creed by James Herbert
The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker

Synecdoche · 08/12/2017 19:25

Michelle Paver, Dark Matter
Henry James, The Turn of the Screw
Sarah Waters, The Little Stranger
Susan Hill, Dolly

All fantastically creepy. Enjoy!

Hygge · 12/01/2018 17:20

I liked The Ritual by Adam Neville

Licencedtodrill · 12/01/2018 21:58

Michelle Paver Dark Matter
Stephen King Pet Semetary- both these sent a chill down my spine

DoctorTwo · 12/01/2018 22:36

Every Dead Thing by John Connolly. Or any of the Charlie Parker series. The Black Angel is my favourite, there is a real sense of jeopardy towards the end and it has the best baddie in Brightwell.

TeaMeBasil · 13/01/2018 20:15

Am a big fan of spooky but it's hard to find genuinely scary books - Dark Matter and Thin Air are the best scary books I've read recently - both Michelle Paver.

Dolly by Susan hill is nicely creepy.

MegBusset · 14/01/2018 00:07

House Of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski. Creepy as all fuck.

heron98 · 23/01/2018 15:37

I have just finished Bird Box by Josh Malerman.

I am never normally scared when reading but I had to actually stop at one point as my heart was beating so fast.

Demiguisee · 30/01/2018 13:51

Reiko: A Japanese Horror Story - James Avonleigh.

pollywollydoodle · 30/01/2018 19:05

Michelle Paver’s Dark Matter And Thin Air are creepy ?ghost stories.
Both question whether an experience has supernatural or medical origins
Dark Matter is more subtle. I read it several years ago and parts of it are still quite vivid in my mind

pollywollydoodle · 30/01/2018 19:11

Another I really enjoyed was The Shape Of Snakes by Minette Walters

hahahaIdontgetit · 30/01/2018 19:26

James Herbert Haunted is brilliant.

codswallopandbalderdash · 31/01/2018 21:54

Second House of Leaves
