Preferably on kindle so I can read them when getting DC to sleep.

Feel like I haven't read a good book for ages and can't be bothered with fiction. I want to read facts/autobiography/travelogue type of thing.

I have been reading a lot of Non-fiction. My favourite areas are Mountaineering and crime (forensic psychology):

The Fact of a Body (a bit harrowing but beautifully-written)
Into Thin Air (Everest disaster)
How Not to be a Boy (Robert Webb Autobiog - funny and touching)
Chase your Shadow: The Trials of Oscar Pistorious (fascinating insight into his psychology)
Behind the Door (slightly different perspective on OP)
No Way Down (K2 disaster)
Buried in the Sky (K2 disaster from Sherpas' perspective)
The People vs OJ Simpson
Revolutionary Ride (woman motor bikes through Iran)

Foxgloves

I love those too! Read them end-to end in France (FIL lives in that area)

They're great aren't they - and also get excellent reviews on amazon. I wish I could find another series of books I'd enjoy as much as I did these.

I just read Clare Tomalin's autobiography 'A Life of My Own'. It was such a good read, I just ate it up.

The Radium Girls is harrowing but really interesting.

Death's Acre by Bill Bass & Jon Jefferson is a long term favourite of mine. It's a grizzly subject but Bill is really funny.

CaptainWarbeck · 24/11/2017 10:35

Thanks foxglove that is just the sort of thing. And there's a series! Double points. Going to download.

Yoda that's a cracking list, thank you. I have read How Not To Be A Boy and loved it. I'll check out the rest.

Will look up the other two too, thanks both.

Much better getting stuck into a kindle book than skimming instagram etc.

Btw any fans of books along the lines of 'someone chucks in the towel and goes to live life in a totally different way somewhere else' - these are all good reads:

Chris Stewart, Driving Over Lemons - Spain (there are loads of these, all good)

Hilary Burden, A Story of Seven Summers - Tasmania

Helen Russell, The Year of Living Danishly - Denmark obviously

Caro Feely, Saving Our Skins - France, couple set up a winery together

Katherine Stewart, A Croft In The Hills - rural Scotland

All great reads.

If you fancy some historical non-fiction, I just read Alison Wier's Richard III and the Princes in the Tower, very good.

Also enjoyed Lost Moon (about the Apollo 13 mission), so much more than was in the Tom Hanks film.

Prisoners of Geography is excellent, provided you are interested in politics and history as well as geography.

Alwaysinmyheart · 28/11/2017 16:05

You’ve been publicly shamed, by Jon Ronson is a great read

Savage Continent, about the aftermath of WWII on the continent is quite harrowing at times but an important book

Alwaysinmyheart · 28/11/2017 16:13

The good women of China is a fascinating, eye opening book

Persian Fire by Tom Holland is a great book about the Persian Empire.

Shadow of the Silk Road by Colin Thubron was fascinating.

Blood River by Tim Butcher, about a journalist who followed Stanley's route along the Congo River.

Flamingoingmad · 28/11/2017 16:21

Currently reading 'The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life' by Alice Schroeder

Normally don't like autobiographies and thought this would be heavy going- but my goodness this mans life is something else.

GrouchyKiwi · 28/11/2017 16:22

Oh, and I just remembered a book I read ages ago. It's The Rasputin File by Edvard Radzinsky. It's based on a file from the Russian State Archives that was discovered in 1995 and it's fascinating. Dispels some of the myths about Rasputin. Even though it's translated from Russian it's very readable.

My favourite non-fiction reads of the past year have been:

Four Mums in a Boat by the Yorkshire Rows
All at Sea by Decca Aitkenhead
Lone Rider by Elspeth Beard
Love with a Chance of Drowning by Torre DeRoche
In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom by Yeonmi Park
Lines in the Sand by AA Gill
I Found my Tribe by Ruth Fitzmaurice

All great reads. Highly recommend.

This is a set of three set during and after ww2 and contain extracts of peoples letters to mass observation.

I also love clear waters rising by Nicholas crane. Its one of my favorite books.

Marking place as I love non-fiction

Recently read "Silent witness" (can't remember who it was by) but it was about forensics and very interesting

flimp · 28/11/2017 17:09

Ooh fab thread!

My contributions:

Nothing To Envy - easy read about North Korea

Leap In - by Alexandra Heminsley. About taking up open water swimming, but it's so much more than that sounds!

GollyGumdrops · 28/11/2017 17:52

I'm off to download Leap In on my Kindle - thanks for the recommendation flimp.

AmethystRaven · 28/11/2017 18:39
