DD1 has just finished reading the Mallory Towers set and absolutely loved them. So suggestions please on what to get her next? She likes girly books rather than scary or thriller type ones (but not too twee please!) Am off to look at the Book People but will check back. TIA.

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. My dd read one after the other for a full year (there are 13) and inspired her reading no end. Not girly - but great.

Londonmamma · 13/04/2007 23:06

Oh that brings back such happy memories! Are the St Clare's ones still in print??

Chalet School? Swallows and Amazons (possibly less girly, but still fun).

Blondilocks · 13/04/2007 23:07

Little House on the Prairie?

My DD loved these.

JackieNo · 13/04/2007 23:07

The Swish of the Curtain. Fab.

MrsApron · 13/04/2007 23:07

got to be The Chalet School surely.

MrsApron · 13/04/2007 23:08

What Katy Did series?

ravenAK · 13/04/2007 23:09

Antonia Forest if you can get them!

Noel Streatfeild?

bubblerock · 13/04/2007 23:09

St Claires?

Polgara2 · 13/04/2007 23:13

Gosh that was quick! Will check all these - would prefer a set rather than a single book first - gives her something to get her teeth into. But am making note of them all - thank you.

Polgara, how old is your DD?

PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2007 23:15

little house on the prairie set is a complete classic
clarice bean - there are a few of those
if they still publish the st clare's series by enid blyton those are a natural follow on to malory towers
also if she likes horsey books there are masses by christine and josephine pullein thompson she may like.

Twinklemegan · 13/04/2007 23:16

I would definitely say the Chalet School, but I think they're out of print now aren't they (apart from expensive reprints of the first editions)?

Polgara2 · 13/04/2007 23:20

She's 9. Anyone know if you can buy the St Clare's ones as a set rather than individually? They look like a good idea.

Ooh Little House on the Prairie - that's a good idea too!

The little women series

Anne of Green Gables

My copies of these are waiting for DD to read them!

JackieNo · 13/04/2007 23:25

Has she read all the Narnia books already?

Polgara2 · 13/04/2007 23:26

She only managed 2 of them but it was a while ago - her interest may be rekindled with a little help!

lemonaid · 13/04/2007 23:26

Chalet School -- there are about a billion titles, so they should keep her busy.

Polgara2 · 13/04/2007 23:27

Anywhere that tells me which order they are in?

mummytosteven · 13/04/2007 23:29

Trebizon series (forgot who wrote them mind). Lots of tennis involved!

DimpledThighs · 13/04/2007 23:29

What Katy Did?

I remember I adored What Katy Did Next as a child and read it about ten times. There is somethign wonderful about it for me.

lemonaid · 13/04/2007 23:29

P.S. The Chalet School books are out of print, but you can pick them up secondhand from around 50p each (plus P&P if you buy onlione). Try abebooks .

Twinklemegan · 13/04/2007 23:31

If you mean the Chalet School series, this will tell you all you need to know about the hardback and paperback editions.
