DD1 has just finished reading the Mallory Towers set and absolutely loved them. So suggestions please on what to get her next? She likes girly books rather than scary or thriller type ones (but not too twee please!) Am off to look at the Book People but will check back. TIA.

I loved What Katy did at School too.

Anne of Green Gables - fabulous.
Has she read The Borrowers? Nice series too.

Anything by Elizabeth Goudge.

Chalet School order here (OK, 62 titles rather than a billion, but should still take a while to read them all)

Narnia order (not sure if that was what you meant) is

(in order of publication, which is how I'd read them except that I don't think it matters when you read The Horse and His Boy so long as it's after TLTW&TW)
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Silver Chair
The Horse and his Boy
The Magician's Nephew
The Last Battle

In order of the events in them, they are
The Magician's Nephew
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
The Horse and his Boy
Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Silver Chair
The Last Battle

I was looking for that link Lemonaid - didn't recognise it from the web address when I Googled for it!

i loved mallory towers as a child and also st clares and trebizon books.

nappyaddict · 13/04/2007 23:40

oh what about animal ark books?

DimpledThighs · 13/04/2007 23:41

polgara2 - must say I am admiring you DD's good taste!

From current Book People collections, I'd say:

  • Moomintroll books - cosy but not twee, rather magical;
  • Diana Wynne Jones - the particular set they have isn't one I know but she's utterly reliable (and doesn't come up enough in these threads of recommendation); and
  • because it's such an amazing bargain, and there's sure to be something she'd like, the Red Hot Reads box - 10 books, 8-12 short stories/extracts per book, for £9.99. (We have it and I read the lot myself.)

This is great - thanks everyone! Am going to print this off and go through them all with dd. She's a good reader but had gone off the boil a bit before I introduced her to Mallory Towers, now she can't read quick enough . I was so pleased and want to steer her towards the 'good' choices iyswim! Which is why I asked you lot! Brilliant.
PS: DD1 says to thank you too.
