I’m reading The Words in My Hand by Guinevere Glusford.

Just wondered what everyone else has on the go and if you are enjoying it.

I loved A little life, so so sad. I quite like an ending that's not happily ever after.
I've just read Little fires everywhere by Celeste Ny. I loved it.

Opinions on the book thief? Deciding whether to buy it or not x

IroningMountain · 05/11/2017 11:15

The Scandal by Fredrik Backman and Howards End is on the Landing by Susan Hill.

Enjoying both.

ZepellinBend · 05/11/2017 12:58

I hated The Book Thief Daisy but I do appear to be in the minority.

Went against the thousands of top reviews of The 100 year old man... and it joined the list of very few books that I gave up half way by thinking life's too short to drag through it.

I've just read The Words in my Hand. It was ok but not great.

I've also recently read The Essex Serpent which I wasn't expecting to like but I absolutely loved it.

I'm currently in the middle of Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. I'm enjoying it so far.

My favourite book that I've read this year so far is Exposure by Helen Dunmore. Brilliantly written.

Finished 'Never Let Me Go' by Ishiguro, enjoyed it.
Also read 'Autumn' by Ali Smith which was a bit of a disappointing read.
And just finished 'Felix Holt' by George Eliot, which I really enjoyed.
I am currently reading 'Phone' by Will Self, it's quite a fun read so far (40 pages in).

I love The Hills Is Lonely and all Lillian Beckwith books, but then I am Scottish so biased, stick with it Clawdy, there is a droll humour and warmth in her books.

woollychimp · 06/11/2017 13:55

I've just finished Birdcage Walk by Helen Dunmore and really enjoyed it. One of the best books i've read this year.

Currently reading Love, etc by Julian Barnes - very different from the above but also a good read and funny in places.

Before that I read Man at the Helm by Nina Stibbe which is supposed to be hilarious but wasn't and dragged a bit.

Just started Days Without End by Sebastian Barry. I read another of his a few years ago that I didn’t rate at all but this is very good. Loving his writing style.

1636: Mission to the Mughals

Part of the Ring of Fire alternate history series by Eric Flint

highlandcoo · 04/12/2017 22:12

Days Without End is amazing YYY. Harrowing at times but beautifully written. The best book I read this year without a doubt.

Pootle40 · 05/12/2017 21:30

I loved The Light between the oceans. Ended up stopping reading a little life-not sure whether to start again or not. Just finished The Keeper of Lost Things which was ok.

midsomermurderess · 05/12/2017 22:47

I have just finished John Le Carre’s A Legacy of Spies, in which wecat h up with Peter Guillam and revisit the botched operation that was the Spyb who Came in From the cold.Next up, Alan Hollinghurst’s the Sparsholt Affair.

ellak · 07/12/2017 17:38

American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. I haven't seen the film yet, but the book is extremely shocking but well-written and good insight into the mind of a psychopath.

I'm also reading the Invention of Nature by Andrea Wulf. It's Alexandra Von Humboldt's biography--really interesting.

Slowly reading The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky. I loved Crime and Punishment but this is a lot heavier so it's taking a while.

Sallystyle · 08/12/2017 20:10

Tin Man. By the 'When God Was A Rabbit' lady.

Short but beautifully written.
