I'm trying to remember a book I read a couple of years ago and I am very sketchy on the details.
I remember that it was set in winter and one of the main characters was a bloke who lived in some woods, he possibly had his daughter with him but seem to remember he was mourning someone (possibly his wife/daughter). At the beginning of the book he drives his truck into the local town to get supplies and talks to someone about not being able to make the drive soon because of the snow. Sometime later in the book there's a woman who is possibly pregnant and she's wearing a pink jumper at some point. I think her partner ends up being at a motel nearby but is possibly abusive?!
Does anyone know the title of the book (or books if I've got two confused!)

Some of that sounds like The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

Mistoffelees · 02/09/2017 23:43

It definitely wasn't that, I've read that one and this one was set in more modern times, I think maybe 80s at earliest.

Thank you though!

It's not 'Our Endless Numbered Days' is it? The motel/abusive bit doesn't fit, but a lot of the other stuff does.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/09/2017 10:53

Probably too modern though.

BewareOfTheToddler · 03/09/2017 10:55

It's "Light on Snow" by Anita Shreve.

MrsFezziwig · 03/09/2017 10:55

It sounds familiar - is it a Jodie Picoult one?

BewareOfTheToddler · 03/09/2017 10:56

It involves an abandoned baby; she's found by a father and daughter (who are mourning their wife/mother and daughter/sister). The parents of the baby are teenagers/students and the father is scared and panics.

PuppyMonkey · 03/09/2017 10:58

Which bit of that sounds like Thw Snow Child? Confused

I also think it sounds something like Our Endless Numbered Days.

OuchLegoHurts · 03/09/2017 10:58

Julius Winsome?

Mistoffelees · 03/09/2017 11:02

It's not Our Endless Numbered Days, I've just started reading that and it's what reminded me of the one I'm in about, will check Light On Snow now

Not sure if I post this here...

I remember there was a book I read a long time ago and all I can seem to remember is there was a guy, and he was evil. And he wanted to date this girl, so they did. And he took her to a fair/carnival, and while she’s on top of the Ferris wheel, he sabotaged it to kill her. It was basically his goal the entire book to kill her.

CoolCarrie · 09/11/2017 15:07

Could it be something by Patrica Highsmith at all, Whimsicaltina?

bellablayney · 06/03/2018 18:04

i read this book a long time ago and i cannot remember the title or the author. it was more of a teen romance. the two main characters were an unpopular boy and a popular girl. they were working at a hotel over the summer break and he started to have feelings for her. there was something about a frog pond by the hotel they worked at too.

barbarabelle · 08/05/2018 02:44

i can't remember the name of a book i read years ago about a young girl, drifting, homeless. she finds work in a small rural diner and becomes pregnant by the owner, a wheelchair-bound war veteran. she's afraid of being tied down so rather than tell him she's pregnant she runs to the nearest city and disappears. he searches for her and eventually finds her and convinces her that they can make this work. a real chick book.

I’m looking for a thicker book, it was a collection of short stories. I believe around 1966-1970? I say this because I wasn’t reading yet. There were some illustrations, but mostly stories.
We had several volumes... one section was about science or weather.... I remember a picture of a full moon, a girl gazing from a window. I remember a child that was scared of the thunder, and an adult explaining it was the gods bowling.
I remember one book had a witch or an old lady, one picture showed her with a fishing net, thrown over her shoulder, it contained eels, and all things creepy.
Another showed her grabbing/ capturing a baby rabbit with her long figure nails. She had a horrid face and wicked hair.
I believe the book binding had a pretty calico or marbled spine.

Ithappenedtomee · 17/05/2018 08:42

It sounds like a book I read called The Gift.

Taberm55 · 19/06/2018 23:11

I’m trying to remember the name of a book I read awhile ago. A family living on a cold bleak island, a sister with stinking breath from rotting teeth and family is murdered by female member. Sound familiar?

Dottierichardson · 20/06/2018 15:57

Whimsicaltina Could be from Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith, has got similarities to plot of Ira Levin's A Kiss Before Dying and Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy clearly men plotting to kill girlfriends is a repeating theme!

Centurion123 · 21/06/2018 11:34

I trying to remember the title of a series that I think has 6 or 7 books in it. It starts in 1939 where a boy has lost his father to a shipping accident but it was intentional. The kid becomes friends with a rich kid whose father is the owner of the company of the place where his father died. He also meets a old man in of the old train cars that is a respected army man. He falls in love with the rich kid's sister and it turns out that they might have the same father. This sound familiar to anyone?

Read a book long ago, science fiction, story of man in future society that is closely controlled, people get shots to reduce aggression and drives and have to 'touch' readers everywhere that track everyone's whereabouts, people all look alike, he escapes that country then returns to confront that leader, leader has his head transplanted to new bodies and lives forever, but our hero defeats him.
