Remember a review for a book where the wife runs away in a petrol station (think it is set in the States) and the story is him trying to find out why....

Ringing any bells anywhere??

It's by Anne Tyler (I think) and I can't remember - this will drive me nuts now

Donbean · 28/03/2007 20:58

its not "vanished" is it???

southeastastra · 28/03/2007 20:59

the vanishing (but only seem the films )

multitasker · 28/03/2007 20:59

Oh this is going to drive me nuts - I think it was made into a film a few years ago - Jeff Bridges maybe, the Vanished sounds right actually...

The vanishing was a remake of a Dutch original film.... according to Dutch DH it was a lot better and truer to the book (not that he's biased in any way!)

Lio · 28/03/2007 21:59

Hassled, the Anne Tyler one is Breathing Lessons but the book isn't about him trying to find her - but it's a great book

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2007 22:00

oh gosh I have read it but I am not sure if it is Earthly Possessions

JodieG1 · 28/03/2007 22:01

I thought the vanishing was a great film, really well acted and good storyline.

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2007 22:01

oh yes good point Lio

paulaplumpbottom · 28/03/2007 22:01

Really? I didn't enjoy the movie

ZZMum · 28/03/2007 22:03

The original Dutch film was hte most scary film I have ever seen -- you see nothing scary but it makes your mind think of all sorts and the last scenes make you realise you did not think of the most awful things!! An amazing film that has stayed with me.

The american remake was awful... think it had a happy ending?

OrvilleRedenbacher · 28/03/2007 22:03

god thast a good film
is it based on rl

Greenleeves · 28/03/2007 22:05

Oh my god, The Vanishing, with subtitles? Was the woman who disappeared called Saskia?

That film terrified me.

JodieG1 · 28/03/2007 22:24

thevanishing

Was a great film and not really a happy ending.

chocolatequeen · 29/03/2007 20:57

None of them ringing a bell I´m afraid....

It was definitely about her leaving in a petrol station, she just gets out the car and doesn´t come back from the bathroom or cashier or something. He´s left trying to find clues to find out what happened.

Or maybe I made it all up, it´s driving me bonkers now!

Is it Anne Tyler's Ladder Of Years ?

AuldAlliance · 30/03/2007 21:26

Not sure it's Ladder of Years (think in that one the wife leaves the beach), but another Anne Tyler. Will hunt in bookcase...

suedonim · 30/03/2007 21:57

Oh yes, it was the beach. You have a nice excuse to read all AT's books again!

mrsruffallo · 05/05/2009 13:51

It's definitely The Vanishing- it's a novelette, translated from Dutch
