I need to get a birthday present for a 3yo girl but as I only have a nearly-2yo boy I don't feel qualified to make a decision! Any suggestions?

my 3 yr old DTs, both girls, love Mog at the moment, also anything with ballerinas in (but am trying to steer them away from those!) and all those mentioned already, Charlie and Lola, Tony Ross books and a particular fav right now is Mixed up fairy tales which they find hilarious, bless them

dingdongjustforyoufg · 25/03/2007 21:30

Meg n Mog!

Another vote for Blue Kangaroo - an absolute must. DD loved them when she was 2-3, and still, at nearly 7, comes back to them now and then for "comfort" reading.

Also Blue Rabbit , Angelina, Charlie & Lola, the "Daisy" books (Eat Your Peas etc)., Hoot & Holler , Jane Hissey's Old Bear series.

Yes just wanted to say EVERY child should have The Tiger Who Came to Tea, if you don't have it for your DS yet get it without delay!

cazzybabs · 26/03/2007 12:51

Can't believe no-one else wrote Katie Morag....We love Katie Morag. Mind you we also do her at school with our Year 1s and they aslo love her.

dd, who is nearly three, (and I) LOVE falling for rapunzel

RosaLuxembourg · 26/03/2007 13:40

How could I forget Quentin Blake - DD is loving him at the moment. There is a good set going on Book People too I think, or was recently anyway.

RosaLuxembourg · 26/03/2007 13:42

Yes it is this one most fabulous especially Cockatoos.

I have a 3yr old and she loves the Disney|Princess Stories. Her favourite ones just now are Snow White and Cinderella.

BendandBreak · 26/03/2007 13:58

My dd is 3.5 and loves :
Quiet by Paul Bright and Guy Parker-Rees. It's about a big lion telling the whole jungle to be quiet while his baby sleeps.(DD likes to shout out the "quiet" bit). This book is available also with a CD for £7.99 on Amazon.
Another favourite is Marvin Wanted More about a sheep who ate till there was nothing in the universe left but him. Then he sicked it all back out- YES OF COURSE this is her favourite bit.
She also loved the Owl Babies book by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson not so long ago. It also comes in a cd set if you want.
Other favourites which I wholeheartedly agree with are Blue Kangaroo and the Mog books (especially The Forgetful Cat where the cat poos on Daddy's chair- the illustrations are great).
Anyone spot a pattern in my lovely dd's book tastes?
Hope this helps

hotandbothered · 26/03/2007 14:32

My naughty little sister is my dds favourite . She is 3.5. We read at least one a day!

Anchovy · 26/03/2007 14:38

My DD is 3.5. She loves anything by Lynley Dodd of Hairy McLairy fame: currently we are reading one called "The Other Ark" which is just great to read out loud (not a HMcL book but very, very good).

Also "Whale and the Snail" and
"Room on the Broom" by Julia Donaldson are fantastic. "Whale and the Snail" in particular is a masterpiece - every single word works and it really is a pleasure to read - even bearable to read more than once.

Thank you for all the suggestions. How am I going to choose?

Anything Dora, Charlie and Lola and she loved \this one when we got out of the library last week.

Tillyboo · 26/03/2007 20:52

My almost 3yo dd absolutely loves Winnie the Witch. I bought her a toy wand and we use it with the story telling.
Alan and Janet Ahlberg - great ! Especially 'The Jolly Postman'

ninja · 26/03/2007 20:57

A beautiful fairy tale book by Bernie Dougherty and Illustrations by Jane Rae. She keeps making me renew it for her at the library (she is nearly 4 though). It's defintely the kind of book you'd keep forever. I'm looking for a copy to buy for her b'day.

The jolly postman's fun too

Tatties · 03/04/2007 21:46

Thought I'd let you know what I went for in the end!

I got three: Katie Morag Delivers the Mail, Where Are You Blue Kangaroo and Six Dinner Sid, with the idea of giving one away as a present and keeping the others for ds. I want to keep them all though! They are lovely, lovely books

Thank you all for the recommendations, I will probably work my way through all of them eventually

Three great choices Tatties. Hope your DS enjoys them (and the little girl whose birthday it is).

Tatties · 05/04/2007 12:03

Oooh Rosa I am also looking out for The Tiger Who Came to Tea for ds, but seems to be generally out of stock atm!
