I really fucking love books

I do. They are the one constant in my life, they've never let me down. It doesn't matter what happens during the day, 7.30pm, DC in bed,out comes the pile (or the Kindle).

I don't have money for holidays - doesn't matter because after 7.30 I can travel to any country I like, and some that don't even exist. When there's no happy endings in real life, open a book and you're swimming in them.

I love them. They're the best things ever. My life would be a barren, lonely wasteland without them. Books have given me so much. Wonderful, clever people out there have written them just to enrich my life, to give me pleasure, or knowledge, to help me relax, mostly for free as their book costs me nothing from the library (or £2.81 from Amazon at the most)

Fabulous bloody things.

So many of my learners (adult education) say they never read and hate books. That they are boring! I am consistently shocked at this disclosure.

FiveShelties · 29/04/2017 23:00

SanFranBear - BookBub looks very, very interesting - thank you. Grin

Lovely, lovely thread WineFlowers.

I have recently been given more hours of work. This gets right on my goat as it gets in the way of reading. Long day tomorrow but I plan to drink coffee and read until at least (daring) 1005am Monday morning.

Happy days Smile.Poo

RabidHarpy · 29/04/2017 23:11

poo? I don't know how that happened.

Flambola · 29/04/2017 23:23

I have recently rediscovered my love of reading.

I think I've read over 30 books in a couple of months.

Some of them were guff though.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 29/04/2017 23:29

I feel the same

To get lost in a book and be transported to another place and another time and caught up in the story is just a fantastic experience

I love audio books too

CaoNiMartacus · 30/04/2017 07:19

Absolutely.

My whole life is books. Reading them, studying them, and writing them.

Bloody love the things!

LydiaGwilt · 30/04/2017 14:40

If you live in Leeds you can join the Leeds Library: www.theleedslibrary.org.uk/. You can send them recommendations to buy books you would like to read and the books will be reserved for you first, they have every magazine you could possibly want to read in the reading room area etc etc.

SapphireStrange · 30/04/2017 14:43

Amen to this!

PepeLePew · 30/04/2017 21:56

OCSock - it's stylistically interesting prose (you'd never get someone writing like that now) but very compelling. But actually what does it for me every time with Hamilton (and agree Hangover Square is his best but also one of the best novels of the 20th century in my opinion) is the characters he creates, and how he makes you feel so entirely engaged in their world and their misery. Every time I read Hangover Square I hope for a happy ending.

squoosh · 30/04/2017 22:05

Love Hangover Square. And I know what you mean about hoping for a happy ending. If only George didn't 'click' into dark those episodes.

Adalind · 30/04/2017 22:06

Lovely thread!
I love to read, although my pace has slowed since I've had kids.
This evening, dd and I were talking about all the books she wants to read and I got a little bit giddy thinking of all the amazing stories she has awaiting her!

Yoksha · 30/04/2017 22:08

I agree OP. Fabulous. things. I've just received 3 George Orwell novels on Penguin Classics. I bloody love reading George Orwell. He's so current.

laurzj82 · 30/04/2017 22:12

Oh me too! Nothing better.

I would live in the library or a book shop if I could!

Yoksha · 30/04/2017 22:30

Books hmmm. < Homer Simpson style over duff beer >.

beachcomber243 · 30/04/2017 22:40

Reading has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life from a small child. In the school holidays I would take 2-3 books out each day from the library, read them and return the next day for more.

I cannot imagine life without books, they are fantastic...and a never ending supply. It has enriched my life and taught me so much. I've experienced life/learnt lessons from the authors [factual and fictional] and been inspired by their example.

I feel sad that those who do not read miss out on so much, I'm sure they don't think they do, but I know they do!

BetterEatCheese · 30/04/2017 22:42

Me too!!! Bloody love them and the peace they bring

BroomstickOfLove · 30/04/2017 22:44

I did a degree in English lit and it didn't put me off reading in the slightest. In fact, I left my sensible and well-paid career to work in a bookshop, which was the best job I ever had but didn't actually pay enough for me to go back to after I had children.

I've just finished a lovely fantasy novel based on Polish fairy tales called Unbound, and before that I binge-read most of Catherine Fox's books, and I'm re-reading Middlemarch, too.

Was the YA goblin book the Sarah Reece Brennan goblin market series? I enjoyed those.

Speedybloomer · 30/04/2017 22:47

Ah I really love books too. I get all antsy if I don't have a book on the go. I owe my love of reading to my fab parents who regularly took us to the library from when we were babies. I still remember the highlight of every week being coming home from the library with a big pile of books! Now I have a 9 month old I really hope to inspire the same love of reading in her.

QueenofLouisiana · 30/04/2017 22:56

I love books too! If my kindle died I'd replace it in a heartbeat- I only feel like that about the washing machine!

I bought DS a couple of books today (1 novel, 1 manga book) as I can't justify buying myself another one.

SheilaHammond · 30/04/2017 23:01

Me too. One in my handbag (thin second hand paperback), pile of library books on the stairs (for upatirsvon downstairs use), kindle by the bed. Usually have 3 or 4 on the go.

I really couldn't survive without books. My real lifetime favourites are by my bed, not to be read always, but just to be there for company. It's like having your family around you.

SheilaHammond · 30/04/2017 23:03

*upstairs

And an audio book on my phone for the car...

HumphreyCobblers · 30/04/2017 23:05

It is impossible to imagine life without reading.

And thank God for people that write books. I am in constant awe that people can do this. Their imagination, talent and dedication amazes me. The ability to be profound and moving and inspirational and interesting.

There are just so many books I haven't read yet and I read all the time.

I am incredibly happy that my dc read constantly too.

The best thing about the Kindle is that I can just buy it and have it straight away, so if it occurs to me it is the work of a moment to buy it. This is bad news for my bank balance however.

Siwdmae · 30/04/2017 23:11

Love the Amazon free books list, although I prefer paper books. I have a pile of about ten which I'm powering through, French and English.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 30/04/2017 23:19

I love books too. Prefer old fashioned analog books (paper) to digital ones, but maybe I should give my kindle another go.

Somewhere on MN is a thread I started a while back asking for recommendations for my book club. It turned into the most amazing list. I'll see if I can find it.
